Am I doing something wrong ???
Are the downloads actually somewhere else ???
Or is this a possible "glich" in you new web site?

The file did not upload to my ISP right. I have fixed it so you should have no problem now.

Back to work on the next patch, this one should make several large changes once Dan K and I get the weapon range and ship speed hammered out.

Hey, what's going on with this mod?

President_Elect_Shang

Dan K has created a revised list of weapon ranges and damage at those ranges. It is a conVersion of the StarFire system but since StarFire uses a 60 hex range and SE4G a 20 hex (box) range there are a few discrepancies. Also the ship speeds in combat will need to be re-balanced.

At the same time I am trying to get ready for finals and complete a few essays for my classes so that I don’t lose any points when my final grade is calculated. I apologize for the delay but I am working on it with what little free time I have. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Cool. Dealing with weapons range and ship speeds if Starfire uses a 60 hex range, and SEIV uses a 20 grid range shouldn't you just be able to divide everything by 3 and get a close approximation?

Starfire uses a bell-curve like accuracy for missiles over distance while beams are linear. And the Starfire uses more of a 50 hex range than 60.

When you browse the order page be mindful that there are two Versions of StarFire, both are alive and growing although hey have diverged significantly. This Mod uses the Third Edition StarFire system. The GSF or Elite Version is the newer one and currently I have no plans to make a Mod based on this sytem.

Also ZeroAdunn I tried to check out the website in your sig but when I click the link it asks me to download ‘something’ (I don’t know what) which makes my anti-virus software goes nuts and close the download and the page. Any ideas of what is taken place? I am using McAfee.

ZeroAdunn

Sorry about that, I need to change my sig, my website is gone, that is spaceports that is doing that. I didn't pay my bills Last year so they cancelled my service.

I haven't seen anything on this forum in about 2 months ... has it gone "bye-bye" ... or is this just an unusually LONG lull

I guess the lull goes on... I don't suppose anybody knows where President Elect Shang, now knows as Mr. Wubbles, has gone?

In the meanwhile, in the interest of trying to attract attention back to this mod, here is an image that I sent to PES a while ago to get his opinion on the ships that would have eventually made a shipset in his mod.

Is that ver 1 or 2?

Its the latest Version he had before he disappeared off the face of the earth.

It is incomplete, IE; no real AI, or shipsets, but has some interesting design elements, and fairly captures the feel of the starfire system.

Doing better now, I got pretty worked up about the people around here blowing smoke out their butts and not able to take a comment or two back on themselves. So maybe I can pick this back up in about a week or so, I need to do a paper on Sun Tzu first.

Ok I need a list of “things that need fixed” with this Mod. Naturally I will start here by searching through the Posts.

@ Captain Kwok: I see you were ready to bury my bones and let someone else take my place, I feel so hurt… http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif

@ Kana: Disappeared yes, but only from the bright side of the earth. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

@ atomannj: Check your “ReadMe.txt” file, it should say Beta 2, if not let me know.

For anyone who is interested there is an UNOFFICIAL Version 1.0 on my HD. I can post the list of changes made from the Beta 2.0 if you care to compare and see how much of a difference there is. I can’t tell you how much of a change since I build up the Versions, as opposed to making a copy for each Version and storing it for historical purposes.

Anyway my target date for starting back to work on this project is, well pretty much now; as I get the bug reports in and track down the issues I already know about that is. After which if enough people want to check it out I can change the V1.0 to Beta3.0 and see what happens from there.

The email address is correct if; however, you do not put "StarFire Mod" in the subject line I will never see the message. I have a very good filter! Edited in: The StarFire Mod address is no good though.

Speaking of email can I get an admin to come in and remove my email from the public and spybot eye please? Contacting me via private message would have been a lot better thanks!

This project is permanently closed.

Provided below is a link that explains what has taken place, but to make a long story short the guy that owns the license is trying to kill the version of StarFire this mod was patterned after; namely 3rd Edition. To cut down on competition he has eliminated ALL competition to his self made version of StarFire called GSF.

http://www.starfireassistant.com/

Fyron, please remove any listing to the StarFire Mod ASAP and pass the word along to any other sites that may be hosting a link that refers to this mod. I have destroyed all copies of the mod (hard drive and backup) and as such can no longer give out said copies. If anyone has a copy of this mod they should destroy it also!

Captain Kwok
August 1st, 2005, 11:30 AM
Why kill the mod? Why not just remove or modify some of the areas that refer to the mod as Starfire?

Fyron
August 1st, 2005, 11:52 AM
I agree with Kwok on this one... Just rename it Star Empires. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif But I guess it might be too late for that, and I don't have a copy of the mod. It's a shame to see all of that work go to waste.

Ed Kolis

Gee, it's fairly well-known that Space Empires is inspired by Starfire... does this mean that they're going to sue Malfador as well? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Kana

Well they can pry my copy of the mod from my dead cold fingers...and I may even make a mod for SEV when it comes out...the mod is for my enjoyment, and I like Starfire...I have Imperial Starfire, and Starfire. Which I assume is 2nd or 3rd version of the series...no one can tell me I can't make something for my enjoyment, if I own a copy of said rules...As long as I don't sell or misrepresent...Well they can try and get blood from a turnip...sorry to see you go to such drastic measures PES...

StarFire and Imperial StarFire are both third edition. StarFire is just the tactical rules and Imperial StarFire is the Empire running rules. They made it into two rule books so those who only wanted to play the tactical combat level didn’t have to weed through page after page of empire rules to find one section.

I decided against renaming the mod and its components as that would take from the spirit of the game I was after. Sorry but I have never liked doing things that way, for me it has always been all or nothing!

I would love to see him try to sue Malfador. GSF is quickly sliding down the drain and StarFire may be dead but the concept behind it is not. The main developer (as noted in the link below) is working on an alternate version of StarFire and when it launches all of us die hard fans will just swap over to it.

I actually own a copy of the GSF rules, bought them when it was first released as I wanted to give this “update” a try. What I didn’t know till I got the books in hand was that this is not an update. It was a total redesign of the game and trounced any joy it had into hell. In my opinion (and you know what they say about opinions) GSF is a paper version of Space Empires and it certainly plays like it as well! Since I own every copy of Space Empires released why would I want to swap from the power of the computer to a pen and paper for the same effect?

Honestly one of my first thoughts after getting the GSF rules and reading them was how ironic this all seemed. StarFire inspired Space Empires and as far as I can tell Space Empires inspired GSF. Maybe it is just my very dry humor but that struck me as more than laughable!

For anyone interested this is a link to the “still under development” Star Empires. It will be replacing StarFire third edition; keeping to the spirit and feel of the original game. As opposed to that joke version released called GSF which is closer to a pen and paper version of Space Empires than it is to StarFire.

Also here is a link to the discussion group for Star Empires. Joining is free and they welcome all comments. If you have ever wanted to see a 4E game under development or would like to make suggestion feel free to join. I don’t know how they will be working the beta testing but maybe you can get a slice of that pie. If nothing else some of the posted comments make for some good reading.

Is this mod totally dead? If so, would anyone object to me either starting it over from scratch, or continuing on from the work that has already been done? Bear in mind, this may or may not ever get off the ground, it will depend on my amount of free time and motivation.

Also, does anyone know where I could obtain the work already done, see what is left to be finished?
