View Full Version : Modder Challenge: Point Generating Components.

I'd like to make Research and Intelligence generating ship components. I'd like to mod the (excellent and greatly enjoyed) Pirates & Nomads mod to enable me to play a race that doesn't need planets AT ALL. The need for Research and Int. is preventing that.
Creating a "Science Lab" or "Spy Lab" component in the component files doesn't work. Oh I can create it, assign it, make a pretty picture, put it in my ships, all that. It just doesn't actually do anything because the "Point Generation: Research" or "Intelligence" ability isn't valid for components.
Is there a way to MAKE it valid for components?
Please pitch your answers to the level of someone who can, just barely, alter a text file without destroying their hard drive.
Thanks.

Thanks. <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">You cannot add this ability to components. It is something that modders have wanted for along time now but it still has not been implemented. Research and Intel points can only be generated strickly by facilities in the current game.

Thank you Ragnarok. Not the answer I was hoping for, but at least now I know.

You know, as long as you don't have a planet, you dont' actually need Intel. In fact, if you don't have a planet, you can't use Intel.
And Research? Bah. Just take other people's stuff and look real close at it.

here's a thought,.. what about adding the ability to colonise asteroids (without transforming them to planets.) Could that be done and made a 'racial trait' so that only the pirate race could use it?
just a thought.
Cheers!

Unfortunately, if you can't generate Intel you can't defend against it.
Continuos massive flurries of stolen resources and mutinous crews are not a fun end to a game.

Cheers! <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, Aaron could do it. But it couldn't be modded. But if Aaron is making changes he might as well go ahead and let the abilities work on components. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

If you don't have any planets, you can't be attacked by intel either. OR have any treaties.

Or any contact at all (with other empires) for that matter; isn't that so? Don't you need a path to a colonized planet for any communication to occur?

Yes. If all of your planets and all of the other player's planets have no valid WP path connecting them, then no contact can be established or maintained.
