ok, I know there has been a number of discussions on both of the above, however, it does get a little confusing, Therefore, I would like for someone to explain in detail, exactly what each game is like, differences, etc. if possible in order to better know the ins and outs of each game. Which is the harder to play or tougher ai's, etc. Differences between the two.. tks
appreciate it
just some ideas from a crotchey old geezer Mac

AST is a mod that is similar to stock SE4, but has a flavoring of the Star Trek universe. It is similar to stock SE4.
STM is a mod that makes the techs and all fit more to the Star Trek universe than the stock game ever could. It heavily modifies the techs, comps, etc. It is not similar to stock SE4 in most ways.

I'm glad you asked, Mac, so that I didn't have to.

In addition to the fine answer Fyron offered, The AST mod predates the Star Trek Mod by about 6 months.
The AST mod is more of a SEIV game with some Star Trek stuff while the STM is nearly a complete Star Trek ConVersion for SE IV.

Then there's the Trek Mod, that nobody plays anymore, cause I haven't bothered to update it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
All it was was the stock shipsets with different race pics. It might have had a few custom ships stuck in there. Galaxy class, Romulan Warbirds, etc. But mostly it used the exsisting ship pics.
The nicest thing about it was it was a small download. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
