8:30 here in sunny Santa Cruz and PBW is up and down and slow, in other words, being very sporadic this morning.

Ok. Looks like it didn't take as long as I thought. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It appears to be back up and running normally now. I have turned off auto-turns though just to be sure. If there are no additional problems I'll turn auto-turns back on this evening.

Ok guys, the PBW IP address has changed. The DNS for our domain name hasn't caught up yet, that's why you can't reach the site this morning.

In the mean time you can still reach PBW directly at the new IP: http://69.81.92.70

Game news emails and new turn emails also won't work for the time being. Turns emailed to the server though will be received.

I have turned off automatic turns for anybody who doesn't happen to check this forum on a regular basis.

geoschmo

Ok, we know what the problem is. Should be back up in an hour or two at the most.

geoschmo
March 26th, 2004, 10:48 PM
Ok, actually not that long. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

However, as a result of the down time, the IP address has been reset once again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif You can reach PBW right now at http://69.81.92.216

I will get the DNS reset, but that may not happen till tommorow. Until then you will have to go direct to the IP and the email send features will not work. sigh, you know the drill. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

EDIT: By the way, I am not in a position to turn off the auto turns at the moment. They are on and have been on all day. I will get them off in the next hour or two and leave then off till the DNS is caught up. If you have a turn that ran in the mean time contact your game owner about having the turn rolled back.

Geoschmo, have you cosidered getting a service like www.no-ip.org (http://www.no-ip.org) , which has a program set to automatically update the IP address related to the domain name when your IP changes? It is great for hosting sites when you are on a connection that changes IP address periodically.

It the server is still running but just not reachable, it will process turns automatically as usual, unless Geo turns it off. As I understand it, he must have access to the server to do that, though. Games can be rolled back to the previous turn, though.
So all we have to do is to wait for Geo...

Back up and running now. If anyone has any issues, let me know.

I didn't have any trouble uploading a PBW file but that was a couple hours ago IIRC and it was a rather small file of course.

erm, I know uīre bussy geo but my turn deadline is approaching and Iīd really like to get this resolved as its very annoying.

Nothing seems to work, I even tried to resign from the game and then sign in from a new account I created.... but I still got the same error report.

the reason has to be on the PBW server, Iīm sure of it. If u want I can resign from the game and u can sign in and try and upload something, uīll prolly get the same error report.

wanna try this?

what web browser are you using? If you using anything other than IE I would try IE and see if the errors continue.

Most of the time I have to use IE to join or accept players.

If your using IE then switch to something else like netscape to upload files from. A while back I could not download or upload anything to PBW and it was because of an MS update for IE. It totally invalidated my install of IE and no matter what I did I could not get my upload or downloads to work for PBW.

It was not PBW, it was an IE thing so try that first. Good luck.

Then I realised I forgot to do something and I un-did my turn. 5 min later as I tried to upload my turn again I got that error I posted below. Iīve been getting it ever since.
1. I tried everything I could think of. I resigned from the game and then joined again (easy to do as I am the game host)
2. I tried resigning and then joining back using another account I created
3. I tried uploading from 3 different computers (win 98, 2000, xp, different IE Versions)
4. I even got 2 friends of mine to try and upload it. (one from New Zeeland and one from Slovenia) they both said the page just "clouldnīt upload the file ... the download went on forever and never finished" but they didnīt get the error report which is strange

Nothing worked, every time the same error report appears.

Therefore I donīt think it has to do with my browser-related settings (browser type, settings, updates etc.) because I didnīt change my browser in those 5 min.... and the thing wonīt upload on any of the other computers I tried.

take a look at that error report I posted, It says something about a servlet error or something, that has to be server based and not remote-client based....

maybe something went wrong with that turn I un-did and now the server doesnīt want to accept another one on top of that....

anyways thanks heaps for the help.

What browser are you using JurijD? This problem is most definitely browser related... (well, not the server being down the other one http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ) PBW was designed explicitly for IE. It does not work well in other browsers (at least, some functions).

Other suggestions for Juri to try when PBW comes back up:

Maybe he should try to NOT use IE... if it doesn not work with any Version of IE it *might* be a bit rash to conclude that it will only work with IE...
Except for a few javascript commands that work only with IE (and are not recommended to use anyway) there should be no problem when using any other brother than IE.

The real problem might be, though, a corrupt database or invalid entry - undo turn only half done with some flags still set that make PBW refuse to accept a new turn, for instance. But this could only be solved by Geo himself, and may not be simple.

Geo it is the game

3rd Cross-galaxy Transwarp access Hub

player number 1

and it is on automatic turns..

Yuri... I suggest you place the game on no auto until resolved.

Another suggestion is to email your turn to some one and your login and password to pbw ( set up a temp one )

And see if they can upload it with no problems

I will do that if you like seiv at symaptico dot ca.

I was able to log in as Juri and upload a turn, so there is no problem with the server. Of course the problem could have been server related and be rebooting it today might have fixed it. I suppose if Juri is able to upload ok now then that's what it was.

It's possible it's someting to do with the specific .plr file you are trying to upload, but I think that is unlikely. PBW doesn't do anysort of file verification, other then to make sure it has the right name. You could upload an empty file and PBW would take it if it had the right name. I can't imagine why that would cause 500 error.

It seems that PbW has taken a more active stance on its hate for Hotmail, and it currently trying to kill my account. I have recieved the five hundred kilobyte new turn for NGC5 five, count them five times so far today.

First two times in ten minutes at around five this morning, then three times in fifteen minutes just now.

Not sure what might be done about this, but it is somewhat vexing.

We haven't changed anything in the code. I am not sure what's up with this Hotmail problem. I got several hundred email bounces again this weekend. As far as I know PBW does not attempt to resend an email if it fails the first time. Although I cannot say for sure that the service we use to send emails doesn't do that. Just like a person, once you send an email and it gets to your isp, you don't have any control over what happens then.

I don't really understand what's going on. It definetly seems limited to people with Hotmail accounts though, as far as I have heard.
