View Full Version : Sound Pack

I think it would be cool to create a Sound Pack, similar in concept to the Image Mod. It would be a collection of sounds instead of images, designed to be installed in the default sounds folder so that mods can make use of custom sounds, just like the Image Mod, without every mod having to be huge.
Rules:
1) All submissions must be unique and original.
2) All submissions must include appropriate credits information. No submission will be accepted without it.
3) All sounds must be prefixed with a group identifier, such as "Fyron_Laser.wav". This is because sounds can have arbitrary names, so it is entirely possible that someone else wants to add a Laser.wav sound.
4) To make a submission, you can send it via email to admin spaceempires net (insert @ and .). If you are unable to email large files, send an email to that same address and an alternative method can be worked out to send the sounds.

I have suggested this many times and no one paid any attention http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
"Unique and original"? So no MOO2 sounds? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Well I meant as in, not stock sounds and not sounds that are already in the pack. The Image Mod says something very similar.

An excellent idea Fyron.
Hicksz idea on how to add tuants to the game would make a sound pack an excellent idea.
I have many tuants. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

What would be nice is the option in SE V to send tuant voice Messages like in many games. Each player would have to have the tuant file in order to hear it.
But would it not be nice to send a message that reads;
"Your empire is beaten!"
But sounds like this:
"You could no more evade my wrath than you could your own shadow."
You address each comment to a specific wav file.

A TextToSpeech engine reading out loud the Messages from the ai speech file would be more logical for that kind of Messages.

If this go ahead, there should be a minimum quality setting as well of at least 16-bit stereo. Files below this level can be saved in higher quality using sound recorder that comes with windows.

An alternate sound for the Depleted Uranium Cannon and the Borg Ripper Beam.
My time is limited on the weekdays so I'll submitted a lot more towards the weekend.

It does take up a little bit more space, but it does make a noticeable difference. Just compare some of the original SE:IV sounds with the newer ones.

Yeah, but wasn't a bit more than just resaving them from a low quality format to a high quality format done?

You will only notice the difference if you have a good set of speakers and the volume relatively high.

Baron - Oh he's been here he's not dead yet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif - for the most part lurking, except on a few Messages on the beta forum. Just been too busy making little future SE4/5/6 gamers with my wife. Hearts of Iron also sucked a lot of my time for awhile (would have been great to do a sci-fi mod for that-but the map is not moddable to a great degree).

Your welcome to use any files from my sound mod. Not sure where exactly it is located now in the new organization of d/l files (a couple of searches turned up nil). But as soon as I find it, I will post a link here.
Found it, in a link provided by Tesco Samoa (thanks!).

I have made some changes to it since the Last update, and will re-post it sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Once I release my mod you can salvage any sounds you want from it. A lot of them are from various star trek games. I have some from starcraft and freelancer, too.

It would be far easier if you were to rename the new ones to be compliant with the Sound Pack format now. Add some common prefix, such as "Eclipse_", to the front of the names of all of them. This will insure seemless integration with the Sound Pack. You could then avoid including them in your mod download file, and point people to the Sound Pack, just like the Image Mod. Assuming this ever gets off the ground, of course... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Should have my revised Sound Pack ready in a couple of days (along with my revised TDM races). I have no problem renaming all of the files with some "[prefix]_" format but I have a ton of sounds that I already use the "notused_" prefix on and renaming 100+ files is going to take awhile. Does anyone know of a batch program or easy way to do that?
Thanks

Irfan View (http://www.irfanview.com) does batch renaming rather well. It is an image program, but it should be able to rename any files. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It can even just add a nice prefix to the beginning of the names of each file.

Tampa_Gamer, check out CKRename (http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,8108,00.asp):
--------------
CKRename is a handy utility you can use to perform batch file renaming operations. It provides a three-pane interface: One to select a path, one to display the contents of the current path, and the Last to show the effects of the renaming options you've chosen. You can eliminate file names, insert strings before or after file names, or replace file names completely. You can also choose to sequentially rename your files, change file extensions, change case, and perform string substitutions. CKRename is very easy to use and, better yet, it's free.
--------------
Tested and used quite frequently. I use it for example for renaming the pictures from my digital camera http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Edit: spelling

IrfanView does most, if not all, of those things, except the string substitution IIRC. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif It is also free. Whatever suits your needs is what you should use. Try both.

I have a sound pack I made for the next Eclispe Mod patch I'm working on. I have them set up with the "Eclipse_" prefix so they should be easy to add to the soundpack. It is comprised of an assortment of sounds from Bridge Commander, Armada 1&2, Starfleet Command 2&3, Freelancer, Rise of Nations, Starcraft, and several other miscellanious sources. They are formatted 44.000 - 48.000 kHz, 16bit Stereo. None should be above 3 seconds in length if even that. If you want them just let me know.
