I'm just curious as to see what everyone's opinions are about this matter.

i don't think it will amount to anything. it's a novel idea, and that's about it.

who knows, though.

There was a proposal to spread some sort of pigment (probably plain old charcoal) across the face of the moon and turn it into a gargantuan billboard a few years back. Fortunately, this is too expensive and difficult to do for now. I don't know the technical details of this new 'patent' but implementing it is almost certainly too expensive/difficult as well. At least for now, we are safe.

If we ever reach the point where someone actually does something like this it will hopefully produce a huge negative backlash, possibly destroying the brand stupid enough to use it, and we won't see any more.

I think any such advertizing should be fair game for target practice. Really awful idea. The people contemplating it should be ostracized and humiliated.

I live in Los Angeles. What are these 'stars' you speak of? Not celebrities, right?

The glow of all the street lights, the halogen headlights (which I believe are more dangerous than no headlights, BTW, since they effectively blind you if you glance in their general direction), and the neon advertisement signs closer to the ground effectively would nullify the 'ad in the sky' thing.

If it does happen, I wouldn't be suprised if a home-brew rocket 'accidentally' rams into the thing within a month.

Bottom line is it is a bad idea of epic proportions to do this. However, human greed knows no bounds and once the pockets of the politicans has been sufficently lined with gold, these greed mongers, like those who clear cut our great forest, will be given the go ahead to fill our clear heavenly skys with their advertisements.

The day is coming when you will wake up and look out side only too a McDonalds sign flashing at you from five miles up thus effectively blocking out the blue sky and sun light.

You know someone should take a picture of their oversized gut and put a caption that reads:
"Product of McDonalds and Frito Lay" on it.

Then place that add in orbit for the world to see.

fortunatly, the cost is prohibitive and will be for a while. but once it's not, they will try it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

Once the cost is not prohibitive enough to make that worthwhile, it will not be too costly for me to buy a space fighter. No more ads! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Let's get a big, full-color, animated ad for SEV up there in the sky. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Life imitates fiction...

In the Red Dwarf books, the crew find Kryten aboard a ship called the Nova 5. The Nova 5's mission was to send a load of stars into carefully-synchronised premature supernovae to spell out the words "COKE ADDS LIFE" in the sky.

THen of course there's Chairface Chippendale from the TICK comics, who manages to carve the letters "CHA" into the surface of the moon before he was thwarted...

in one of the gi-joe cartoons, the evil guy uses a giant laser to carve his face into the moon. but, like everything in that cartoon, it only Lasted an episode.
