Why do so many HD's fail so often? It is because we all play so much SEIV?

I have never had a HD failure. Sometimes, buying the cheapest you can find is a bad, bad idea. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

well for me it is because of renovations near the computer room

Of about 100 hard disks I bought/sold I had 2 failures (after about 4 years of service) - both in the early days of HDs, both cheap ones - plus one 6 month old Maxtor Last year.
I also always advise to let them run rather than switching off the computer if it is for just a few hours or less. Energy saving settings for HDs are deadly. Usually HDs running 24/7 are the most reliable.

Hell my 1.0 gig HD cost me $200.00 bucks back in the day and we all marvled at its storage capacity and now, it is still working and has paid for itself 10 fold.

My Last HD to fail was the one that came with this HP predessor and it was an 80 gig hard drive.

I can get a 200 gig HD for $120.00 bucks now. Less then a $1.00 a gig now. Compare that to the $200.00 a gig I paid for my 1.0 gig HD five years ago.

I think that is an astronomical decrease in price.

When I was in college, one of my professors said that what is generally roughest on a hard drive is switching it on and off. They Last longer if you just let them run. The power use can't be that expensive. I have never had one fail...yet.

Of course, Windows 3000 will need at least 20 gig HD space then...

My first hard drive I have seen was a small cabinet about 1 m high and 60x60cm in size. 40MB. Belonging a "mainframe server" with 32 Users connected to it, 2 processors with 64kB RAM each - filling several wardrobe-sized cabinets. Price something with 6 figures. Well, about 30 years ago...

Technical development in this area has really been breathtaking, faster than in any other area before. I see signs of slowing down, but not really an end.

Well I'm not that old so... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

But being a hardware maniac I've had my share of HDD.

My first one was a 1 Gb HDD *about...6 years ago* aquired with a 586 computer which ran for 4 with no difficulties until the power source burned it down http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif . Very sad moment.

Then i got a 500 MB Samgung one which Lasted till 6 months ago when it suddently died http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

I leaped ahead with a 10 GB one *quantum fireball* which Lasted about 2 years until while diembeling the whole computer *like i frequestly do* i droped my toolbox right on top of the hdd... Guess that was too much for it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I currently have a IBM DEATHstar http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif 80 GB 7200 rpm ATA 133 *which has Lasted for 2 years and still lives quite well*, one 80 Gb Maxtor 7200 rpm ATA 133 and 40 GB Maxtor the same specifications.

200 Gb of movies, games, programs http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The computer I still use is a 1999 IBM Aptiva with the original 8 GB HD. No problems yet, but I'm thinking it may be time to add a second drive, and back up to it.

edit: (gigabytes, silly me)

Update...

Well the problem turned out to be a PSU problem

So I have a new 400 watt powersupply and case coming.... Today....

So I will still be slow on the game turn arounds... And some games are running on the download game... open up turn... and then hit end turn and then upload it ... 233 is a bad speed for these games.

To all the players and PBW Game Hosts... Thank you so much for your understanding in these troubled times...

On a side note... I discovered this thing called a back yard... Very cool...

Old computers are tough as nails, but you might need a power conditioner or UPS to smooth things out for the new ones.
Perhaps see if there's a signal analyser around that you can use on the wall outlets...

sj the replacement was a plant floor system that had a lovely life in an area called body and white. Within 50 metres of this computer were about 100 arc welding robots, heavy fork lift traffic and about 1000 smokers... This system was in this location for about 4 years...

The power is fine... as i am running a stero system / recording studio in the same area with no problems...

Tesco, does this mean you are not checking emails?

I sent you one and want to make sure that you have read it as I haven't got a response (which is fine as it is a 'game' communication and your diplomats have every right to ignore me!) I just want to check that it got through!

I recently had my 1983 PC fail on me.
However, with a bit of antics and hijinks involving duct tape, vaccuum cleaners and surgery on the motherboard, I've got me a working 14 Mhz 8088 based PC again!

I'm way out of practice in sopwith though. Scored -100 points http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

hehe... So I get the new box...

Well I go place the old equipment in the new box http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

and what happens... I cannot find the manual anywhere.

Bring work lap top home to look at manual pdf file...

And I am not joking here. The lap top dies... ( I get a new lap top tomorrow http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

So anyways i get another computer from work... Install win 2k ... get a few viruses... Get that cleaned up.. Attempt to install adobe... Need service pack 4... get that and then download manual.

Read manual

Place old equipment in new box.

Power it up...

Works right away... Not one reset on anything... So I am scared..

But natually of course the freezing and crashing continues..

Go to reinstall OS

Its at work

So tomorrow i hope to have a new os installed...

So you may not hear from me for a few days.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If that does not work...... and the crashes continue

I am going to go back to my first hunch which was the video card is going
