03/30/04 - SE5 Underway!
Just wanted to let everyone know that programming work has begun on Space Empires V. We're shooting for a summer 2005 release of Space Empires V. We've got big plans for this next Version including real-time 3D rendered graphics, a redesigned user interface, infinite technologies, Galactic News, Warp Point assault weapons, Space Monsters, built in support for mod selection, a true scripting language, and more! In the coming months we'll be putting up a Space Empires V page showing off the latest screenshots and design issues. And as always, we'd love to hear any suggestions you have for the game. Feel free to let us know what your must have features are (*********). Here's to an exciting year! <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Wooohooo!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

That certainly is good news. We'll just have to wait for a year. In my mind it raises the question, how successful will SE5 be?. We have a community of avid fans here.some new, some like me have only been playing the games for a year or so (18 months), and others who have been here for years and played previous SE. What if SE5 makes it big?. Will it just be the same supporters, or will this forum be filled with lots of new people who never heard of SE before and bought the game because all the magazines gave it a 95.

With the release of the game being a little over a year and a half away, (most likely Nov/Dec 2005) I guess now is the time to PRE-ORDER. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Perhaps scripting is also refering to;
When ship enters sector 6,6 in Alpha Centauri System show message "A dimensional opening has proiduced an identical ship from another dimension", and then you'll have two ships. But the next time someone enters the sector nothing will happen, a work once sector event?
Will Aroon include a real spaceship bundled with SEV ? That should be cool.

I guess the unlimited tech thingy is actually not THAT nice. Just make each weapon has unlimited tech levels and add a some code like
"each level increases damage by 10"
and
"each second level increases range by 1"
or something odd like that. Not really unique. THen again i dont know and this is just a simple mind thought.

Well, I know what 3D rendered graphics are but what the heck are "real-time 3D rendered graphics"? If it has anything to do with combat, I ain't interested. Nope, not interested in having the computer train my fingers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Now, I want you beta-testers to do a real good job because I'm really looking forward to playing the demo for the first time and getting that 8-years-old-again feeling http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Fyron
April 1st, 2004, 05:26 AM
No need to have fingers trained at all. As has been mentioned on many occasions, the ability to pause and issues orders while paused eliminates every possible click-festing issue with real time combat. Multiplayer games would likely have combat done strategically, rather than tactically (as in Se4, esp. for PBW games and such), so there is no reason for concern there. Except hotseat games, which can easily be handled by having simulated "turns" where the game runs combat without intervention for X seconds, then pauses, giving each player a chance to issue orders, just like SE4 combat. Except that there will be no turn based combat idiosyncracies, which no possible purely turn based system can get rid of.
Grandpa Kim
April 1st, 2004, 05:33 AM
So, unlike Warcraft II, I'll actually have real control when a hundred ships are in the battle. Cool! "Pause" is good. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
I don't doubt this has been mentioned before, but time constraints prevent me from reading more than about 20% of the threads http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Oh you can bet that the beta testers won't let Aaron make SE5 a RTS game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif There is a whole world out there outside of RTS (Warcraft, Starcraft, etc. are "RTS", a specific (and small) chunk of what real time games can be).

As opposed to say SE4 shipsets where all the rendering is done ahead of time.
There is 0 reason they couldn't be used in a turn-based system; they already have been many times. The recent attempt to do an updated Version of X-COM uses the Quake 2 engine for example, and it runs pretty much the same as normal X-com. So does the excellent Silent Storm.

I am not sure, but I think this will drastically change the way ships sets are made. I believe, and I could be wrong, that now you must have a wire frame model of your ship and a "skin" to go over it.
Look at BOTF and how they did it.
I hope this is not the case.

Cool,
But there was something that did keep me out of starfury : the feeling of driving a starship on the sea. It was 3d on a 2d world. Which feels strange. I would love to have true 3D, sort of simplified homeworld system map. Hell, Elite2 was doing it 15 years ago, so their must be a way to get it in SE5.
