I try to play on hard/high bonus but unless I
disable fighters (and therefore I guess carriers)
I get overwhelmed very early.

Does anyone know if disabling fighters causes
the AI any problems?

Slaughtered by fighters, eh? Ever tried researching point-defense? Makes mincemeat of the little buggers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif (You need level 1 of Military Science first.)

Yes, point defense and sensors.

I always build frigates full of only PDCs, to fend off the enemy fighters.

Also, on the fighter's strategy, make sure it says "Target first: Fighters", so your fighters engage the enemy fighters first, instead of going for the Capital ships.

And build tons of fighters yourself. You don't need shipyard facilities for that.

Everytime you a planet with an orbiting moon, put the moon to work full time on fighters, which will be placed on the big planet when the moon storage its full. I even have a moon called "FighterTown". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Don't you have to put at least one "real" weapon on your dedicted PDC ships in order to get them to target anything at all?

He's probably playing tactical combat. In strategic combat, you are right; ships with only PDC are viewed by the game engine as "without weapons" so they run like a girlie during combat. That is solved by giving them at least one "weapon". No offense to girlies... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
