Where can I buy this game for cheap? I fell in love with the demo while I was bored at work but I can't stand the thought of spending any more than $20 for a two year old game with incredibly low production value. I'm not asking for Half Life 2 effects but I played 1991 games with better graphics than this. The offical site is asking for $40 bucks, Chips & Bits have it priced at about $35 but thats still way too high. I'm thinking $15 bucks tops.

Do they have it at Fry's or Best Buy at this price? I live in CA, San Diego BTW...

Which do you want, graphics or gameplay?

Both!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif And I'm willing to pay for it too if this game can deliver on both fronts but its two years old and have graphics that will run on my cell phone so $40 is a bit too much. I tried eBay for a cheaper alternative to no avial.

The price may drop in the coming months, since SE5 is in the works. Otherwise, eBay is probably your best bet for lowest price.

Ah man, look at what you made me do, delurk. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

"Incredibly low production value."

Mr. I don't think you understand something. Look around and find another 4X game that has come out since 2001 that beats SE IV. A game superior to SE IV which was produced by a one-man company, as moddable as SE IV, as supported as SEIV, as fan loved, and still as popular as it was when it was released in 2000. Find ONE game that has that kind of production value my friend. Just one.

Space Empires was produced by one man, not a team of programmers, and it has dominated the 4x market since its release back in Nov 2000 while all other games in the genera have failed. Gold is one of the most supported games I have ever seen if not the most supported.

Malfador has done an exceptional job with the Production Value of this game that I seriously laughed when I read your comments. Then I realized that you were serious and I felt, no I was compelled to post.

If you want a game with bad production value, go buy Masters Of Orion 3. That game had a lot of people working on it, and a lot of money thrown at it and still it is utter crap. Compare SE IV to that and even to Gal Civ, Reach for The Stars, and a couple other games that have come out since 2000 and you will soon see that SEIV is the king of the hill. Sure the graphics are dated, but at least we can add new graphics when we want. Sure the game play is not 3d, but who cares, again we can add our OWN ship designs to the game without having to be 3d engineers.

And at least our battles can have over 100 ships on each side without CRASHING like in BOTF, and Rebellion.

No if anything SE IV has higher Production Value than the Last five games for the 4x market combined.

Gal Civ is the only competition for SEIV and after playing that game for a week you will be board sh**less.

SE IV Gold is worth the $40.00 bucks more so today than when it was released. And for the record, the game may be two years old, but it is far more popular today than ever. So either buy the game for the $40.00 or get it on EBay for less, either way buy the game and see for your self otherwise, try MOO3 and enjoy.

I sold him my copy of the game for $20.00 buck and gave him my copy of SEIV that I won through the PBW Contest.

I am surprised he played GalCiv for that long as well. Great looking game, just boring as all hell.

(SEIV = Girl Friend leaves. Just be warned http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif )

The fact that you cannot get it on Ebay should tell something about the worth of the game... everybody keeps his copy. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

The sh*t has hit the fan...

Ah come on guys, you scared him away...now he thinks we're all a bunch of fanatical fans, bristling with hostility at any sign of a possible insult to SE4.

*Wait a minute...we ARE all fanatical fans. Oops, my bad*

Er...that eBay auction is listed at 15 GBP which is 27 bucks US, NOT including the oversea shipping http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif At that price I rather buy it from the developer or Chips and Bits. I'm usually not this cheap but hey, times are tough http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I'm not trying to insult anyone but I find it hard to pay $40 for a game that looks so ancient. I guess I'll be waiting for the next Version then...unless there are mods out there to improve the game's sound and graphics.

Zetler, believe me...... Buy the game, and get addicted in 3 hours.

Tons of 'FREE' Mods, Shipsets, maps and above all plenty off players who are willing to play on PBW with you (the players are also for free) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Think of it this way... for 40 bucks, you get what, 10? 20? quite different games (in the form of mods). Mods like Pirates and Nomads (play a pirate or nomadic race), Proportions (slows gameplay down to a more psuedo-realistic pace, makes it take lots of time to get colonies developed, stresses homeworld), Star Trek Mod, Babylon 5 Mod, Star Wars Mod, Devnull (has nasty space monsters that will always give a challenge), Adamant (play as a magic wielding race, a race that evolves organic ships, or a normal "physical" race), Starfire, Highliner, Starfleets, and so on. Each mod offers unique gameplay, giving SE4 a lot more replayability than 99+ percent of games on the market, even if you only play a few mods.

If you want different sounds, check out Tampa Gamers Sound Mod, which can be found on SpaceEmpires.net (http://www.spaceempires.net/home). If you want different shipsets, there are 270+ of them out there to pick from. Check out the SE4 Race Directory (http://diesel2035.free.fr/racedir/index.htm). There are a few alternate game interface "mods" out there, such as TNZ Interface Mod (http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=354) and Eclipse Interface Mod (http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=390). There are tons of custom component, facility, planet, star, etc. images as well in the Image Mod (http://imagemod.spaceempires.net/). There are lots of custom graphics available. Using them is really easy. Modding is really easy, as all the data is stored in simple, easy to edit text files.

I already played the demo four times. I'll try to hold out two more weeks for a deal but if not my addiction will force me to buy this game at full price LOL http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Not sure what the heck 4X games are but I'm loving this one. Makes me wonder how popular it could become if developer have access to a few artist to help the game reach it's full potential.

4X: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate. It is the genre of strategy games in which SE4 is a member, as are other space opera games (such as MOO2, Stars!, GalCiv (sort of), etc.).

You passed the event horizon when you played the demo the first time. You just didn't notice. You are now falling faster as you are being sucked in to the black hole known as SE4 Gold. Not even light can escape. But who is complaining? The company is great. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Slick.

If you think this game has bad graphics, you should look at the former 4X champion Stars. Now that game was a great game, but it had the worst graphics I have ever seen.

Welcome to the fold and I hope the game grows on you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
