View Full Version : SE3 shipsets

Does anyone have a copy of the pseudo-3d conVersions I have made. I seem to have lost them.
I had uploaded them only to the cyberwars site and they are down or inaccessible as everything else there.
I thought I had local copies (either HD or CD backup) of all of my shipsets, but I have evidently missed these ones.

I still have the 3ds file I had used and the original se3 shipsets so I guess I could remake them, but it'd be a waste.

I made a few web searches but I couldn't find them Online anywhere. So please tell me if you know of a link or contact me if you can send it.

All of this is because I had finally started to fool around with 3dsmax again and I'm having some promising results in creating truly modeled 3d ships based on the SE3 shipsets.
I won't promise a finished shipset anytime soon, because everytime I do this I end up faulting my word, but I have made a couple of ships that look acceptable (to me) of one of the SE3 shipsets I missed the most (and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one), number 12.

I will also accept contributions of anyone who want to write some fitting AI and/or racial descriptions, otherwise I will en up giving them a copied AI like with the pseudo 3d.

Hi Andres!

If you remember how were the files called, or if they had a race name, it is probable I had them copied in a CD. Sometime ago I downloaded every shipset I found in all the SE4 pages I knew and burned them in a CD, so If you tell me how were the races called may be I can help you.

Think I might have them somewhere...

*rummage rummage*

Yeah, I have style003 to style014 here. Not sure what happened to styles 001 and 002, but I've a feeling they might have been redundant because they were "officiallyt" converted to se4 shipsets as the Krill and Jraenar.

Anyway, I'll zip them up and see if my webmail can handle sending them to you. =-)

They are listed on Trooper's shipset site as being on Kuat Drive Yards, but discontinued. Kuat annoyingly re-did it's site format but dropped most of the available shipsets as "not up again yet" indefinitely.

I probably have them on a CD backup _somewhere_ too. Anyway they were apparently named STYLE003 through STYLE014 (see http://diesel2035.free.fr/racedir/index2.htm, near the bottom ).

Thanks Dogscoff and Pathfinder I recieved the files OK.
I should have instructed to post here before sending them, since your two Messages filled most of my 6 mb inbox (if anyone else tried to send them they must have bounced back).

Oh, and I run the Kuat Drive Yards site, althoug I have lost contact with my former host Rimfire from cyberwars.com, and haven't had the time time to rebuild the site since.

And ds, style001 and 002 were the Jraenar and Amon'krie, not the Krill. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

What I'm trying to do now is a similar conVersion for some of the others.

I have to go back to work now, but I may post some previews later.

Yeah, there were lots of nice ship sets for SE III. I'd like to see more of them converted to SE IV format. There was a beautiful 'Islamic' set, for example, that would probably be 'politically incorrect' now. But they were quite impressive, with dramatic sweeping 'wings' and the crescent logo on them.

Yeah there were many more SE3 shipsets than SE4 ones, and many of them are very cool.
I guess that it's because it's much easier to make or edit a 32x32 bitmap and you don't need any special graphics program almost every player had created at least one shipset.

For SE4 you need to draw larger and more detailed portraits, for what you need some graphics program, 3d for almost all of the shipsets, although there are a few 2d exceptions such as Trooper's Pexlerr (BTW their flag looks very similar to an Islamic crescent to me)
Anyway, making an SE4 shipset is much more complicated and therefor we have fewer shipsets.

I hope that doesn't mean that we'll have even fewer shipsets for SE5.

I also have a some SE3 shipsets somewhere.
But now, as I had done with that quick conVersion you were kind enough to send me back, I want to concentrate in the 12 stock SE3 shipsets that didn't make it into SE4.
I think I had already mentioned how disappointed I was when I finally got the full Version of SE4 and found that there were no more converted SE3 shipsets than the two I had seen in the demo.
Well I'm doing something abut that now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

BTW I have completed few more ships of that style12 shipset, but I'm too lazy to upload and post them tonight.

Here's what I have so far. I just posted because I needed a little encouragement to finish the set.
http://kdy.spaceempires.net/temp/preview12.jpg

There are still a few details that need to be fixed, such as that light-color band on the left of the ovoidal hull of the destroyer.
As always, don't be afraid to critizice, I mean it's nice to hear how nice your work is, but it's not very useful to correct details

The race portrait is currently considered provisional, żdo you think it matchs the shipset?

I also need AI and racial descriptions.
Perhaps these pictures will get some of the AI wizards and/or story writers inspired. Anyone?
I'm provisionaly using the name 'Sethulkra' from the default empire names file, but you may change it to match the racial descriptions.

That is nothing short of mind-blowing. I'm glad I already finished the KanesS because if I'd seen these first I would have given up on shipset creation completely.

Those pics are truly gorgeous. Did you make the race portrait yourself? If so, how? I mean really, how?

Andrés

Theoretically it can be exported as .X
Face count is not that high considering that models consist of many curved surfaces, and may be reduced with a little work.
And I'm supposed to be able to export them with .x format or maybe convert .3ds files into .x
But I don't even have the SF demo or any other program that uses these format to test them.

Abut the copyright, I don't think it will be a problem as long as I don't try to sell it. Well known artists such as H.R. Giger consider these knid of fan work as free publicity.
And for SE5, I don't know what kind of race portraits it will use, but my guess is that they will also be 3d models and not 2D pre-rendered pictures, so a new one will have to be modeled anyway.

BTW I keep working on the shipset and just finished the bases, but I'm too lazy to upload and post another preview.

I kind of doubt SE5 will use 3d race portraits. Faces are the most difficult aspect to render, you'd get little gain for a LOT of effort.

Here is my attempt at a race description. I figured I would try something a little odd for them.

Sethulkra Regime
Aggressive Artisans
Lord Aventhass
Ice Methane

Biological Discription

An average Sethulkra is approxamatly 1.5 meters in length. They are usually of a sandy brown coloration but have been known to have slight variations in hue. Thier eyes are a deep golden yellow and are capable of pointing in two directions at once. Sethulkra lack a solid skeletal system, their form is held in place by complex placements of cartilage. Sethulkra bodies have very few organs in them but the ones they have are heavily reinforced with cartilage. The most heavily guarded is a peculiar ring shaped organ that allows them to hover up to a meter above the ground by bending a small amount of gravitons around itself. Instead of teeth, Sethulkra have a plate of cartilage that protrudes from their upper jaw which they use to sever their diet of small and long nvertabrates. Another distinguishing feature are the tentacles. These are very sensitive, and can even detect the thoughts of other Sethulkra from a single touch.

Society Description

Sethulkra society is very rich one where art is the most important of all things. Their art is centered around genetic manipulations that they deem as the true form of self expression. They are always looking for their new subjects for their art which when finished they then place in stasis in their great art halls for all to see. Their government is ruled by a lord who has proven himself in a match of skill with other contestants. These matches take place every 30 years or when the current lord dies. In such a match the contestants take places in manipulation cahambers and try to kill each other by altering the vital functions of the other candidates while trying to repair lethal alterations to themselves. These matches can go on for days. The Last candidate alive is named ruler and lord of all Sethulkra. This is never disputed for none would dare to defy the victor of the match. Sethulkra have no respect for other races for they see them only as objects for their biological art. Modifying a sentient species is considered the highest form of art possible. Pairing that with their mastery of biological manipulations makes them a horribly dangerous species.

General History

The Sethulkra have had a history of war ever since they met thier first alien race. Their total lack of respect for alien life has given them the label of a race of monsters. For generations Sethulkra have been abducting alien species by the millions all to fuel their unending desire for new artforms. The word about this dangerous race has not reached very far, for all species that know them are engaged in desperate combat or are horribly mutated and frozen in stasis in their art halls. The Sethulkra have sent colony ships into the far reaches of the galaxy for the sole purpose of seeking out new forms of life for their twisted art.

Ok Andres... there will be no consensus. Just start from the beginning and make them all (other than those that already exist in SE4 form). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Brilliant work Andres! I've had a deep longing for the old SEIII stuff nibbling at the back of my brain for a long time...but no artistic talent. :-)

Nice looking set of ships. And that picture. I can sympathize with Atrocities. It looks surprisingly like my wife when she loses her temper, and the longer we've been married, the shorter time between outbursts http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif . <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">It's the hormones... My wife's moods are predetermined by her hormonal state for the week...she has her grumpy weeks, and her depressed weeks, and her hyper weeks, etc. Actual events are irrelevant...it's all about the chemicals in her bloodstream...heheh. It's eerie...

I had always liked style 3 anyway and had often modified it to a variety of purposes. I picture this one as a fairly humanoid oxy breather type...maybe even something somewhat cutsie in appearance (like the Norak) but probably more aggressive as the ships look somewhat militaristic. Feel free to ignore me tho...just babbling. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
