Win media player 8 plays back DVDs, but it sucks- the controls are, well, practically non-existant. You can't rewind/ ffwd except to the previous/ lnext chapter.
Personally I use windvd from intervideo (came with the laptop.) If you don't have that, look on the web for some freeware media player, you can bet there will be a few decent ones about.

I did a search one time looking for something to let me "grap" frames from my DVD player (found it!) and noticed a lot of freeware/shareware players, I think. Unless you just want everything in one program, there's a suggestion.

The only free media player that I know of that plays DVDs is VLC. Go to:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It will also allow you to multi-steam the DVD over a network (Way cool) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Bwahaha!
Control panel, add/remove software, REMOVE WMP9!
If that is still possible? Probably not...
Go to www.free-codecs.com (http://www.free-codecs.com) or the mirror www.codecsdownload.com (http://www.codecsdownload.com) and check out the free goodies. More players and codecs than you can figure out how to use in a lifetime. Several of the free players can play DVDs.
Especially checkout the 'Real Alternative' and 'Quicktime Alternative' codec packs. You can listen to 'RealMedia' or watch Quicktime movies WITHOUT the respective branded player browbeating you to buy the registered Version!

A codec is the software needed to read and decompress a specific format for video and/or audio.
