Sorry for being slightly offtopic. Im wondering if you will ever release new Updates or patches for the your SE4Modder ?

I found a few bugs, and would like a few additional features. So will you do another update?

Off topic? This is one of the most on-topic Posts Ive seen in awhile.

The number of conversations about other games, especially giving web links, seems to be coming to a head.

well, now that i think of it.. Yeah you are right Gandalf. There have been quite a lot of *real* offtopic threads lately http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif thanks for pointing that out ^^

Recent trends are nothing new.

See Ruatha? This is why open source would be good, so that others can continue to improve programs after their creators disappear. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Well that is not what I would qualify as being open sourced... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

There are some threads, and links, which are not healthy for a forum on a game publishers site.

The shrapnel.general forum might work better for some of the OT stuff but some of these (discussing other games and other ways of getting games) might not even work there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

See, that is where you are wrong. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif This is practically the sole Online community for SE players. Shrapnel is very supportive of non-SE4 discussions here. It is not just a place to discuss SE4, it is much more. Trying to limit discussions to just SE4 would probably drive 90% of the community away.

The Shrapnel General forums would not be a good place, as it would require constantly browsing two separate subforums, which is a pain.

I personally love this community. And the OT topics are some of the main reasons.

I for one am here not only to talk about Space Empires, even if it is a forum invented for it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif . The off topic threads here allow people to discuss things with people all over the world. And even if the Posts get heated i think most people here leave with at least some new knowledge in their minds, even if they don't believe it.

If OT threads were causing flame wars left, right and centre I would maybe have a different opinion. But it's rare that happens, because this is a great community. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Not AWOL. I gave myself an honourable discharge. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I've quit playing SE4. too busy doing other things. (still got some spies here though http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif so I popped in)

So no there won't be anymore SE4modder updates. At least none planned. I may get back into it in the future, who knows. (maybe when SEV comes out)

You may consider the latest Version as open source. Source code for ver 1.76 is here: (written in VB6)

http://www3.sympatico.ca/dgunstensen/SE4ModderSource176.zip

P.S. My email address, changed to avoid the insane amount of spam has the 'dgunsten' changed to 'dgunstensen' Same with the 'dgunsten' part of any address to my webspace

David,

Might I suggest you release the source (as you did) with some sort of official license (plenty of different open source licenses to choose from, beer or BSD fan myself (see http://opensource.org/licenses/ )). There seems to be community interest in your application and would hate for either somebody to rebrand it as their own or for you to take ownership of a future release somebody created based on your initial code release. As a developer myself 'You may consider the latest Version as open source' is extremely vague and doesn't spell out exactly what a developer can or cannot do with your code.

Not saying this will happen and we are a small community but there are always those off chances.

Isn't there a "do whatever you want with it" license?

Oh yeah, public domain.

I some how broke my SE4Modder program...and don't know how I did it...I've tried uninstalling, and deleting every reference to the program, and trying to reinstall...all to no avail...any ideas or help?

i say that you take off and nuke it from orbit. its the only way to be sure.

seriously, maybe its the install files or source that you are using. do they install on another machine? try downloading a different version? maybe some of the shared resources the program relies on are corrupted, or an incompatable version?

Is anybody (still) working on the SE4Modder? I personally use it to great satisfaction.

No. I believe DavidG after updating his program to work with the new additions in 1.91, decided to finish his work on it. I haven't seen him around for some time now.

Ok I figured out what the problem was...and I thought I had already done this and didn't...

I had a folder that I was using for a mod that I was modifiying...I guess it got interlinked with the SE4Modder files...when I 'uninstalled' SE4Modder...

I deleted that mod folder, and SE4Modder worked just fine...
