My dad suggested recording cicadas and using them as a sound effect in a sci-fi game...

ps. Ah, it came to my mind, that while certain insect can drive you nuts, you could make the weapon to infest living quarters of crew instead of making normal damage. Also perhaps some sort of wire eating stuff which could affect life support and bridge. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
