View Full Version : Just bought SEIV Gold... can't wait to start playing PBW

First post, I just wanted to introduce myself to the forum. I've been lurking the Last few days trying to get a feel for the Online community for this game and I must say it seems quite excellent!
Looking forward to paying my dues against human opponents... The game should arrive by Weds afternoon, then I'm gonna take some time to learn the tech progressions absent in the demo and then find a PBW or 3 that are receptive to newbs.
Ya'll have any aspects of the game to emphasize while learning to make the transition faster?
I've got the interface down and my MiM skills are decent (probably horrid compared to you vets but I've only had time on the demo).
I just wanted to say I'm looking forward to being active in the PBW community!
Sincerely,
James (LonghornXtreme)

If you've been lurking, you probably already know this: Play your games in strategic mode. That is how PBW is played and it is quite different from tactical.
Almost any game is receptive to newbies. Just be sure you have the right patch-- 1.91 is the latest and is used in most games-- and the right mod. Many games are unmodded but many use a mod. Good idea to learn a bit about the mod for the game you join.
Good luck and welcome to the best game anywhere! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif

Welcome aboard! uhh, whats a MiM?
Strategic combat is important like the man says, but its not as simple as it looks. customizing those ship and fleet strategies is vital, as is the order of weapons you place on a design, as is having the right ship designs to compliment each other in a fleet.
There are far too many little tricks to list them all, but you will start picking them up as you play.

Hey and welcome! Any question you have, don't hesitate to ask it...odds are it'll be answered within half an hour (usually less). And good luck to you with PBW. Maybe we'll meet in a game or two!
(EDIT: MiM = MicroManagement?? (maybe??))
(EDIT 2: Hey, 500th post!! Already up to ~4.16% of Fyron's count!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )

Welcome to the forum and the game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
There are a few strategy articles out and other nifty links in the bottom STICKY thread.
Mostly for PBW games you should read Fyrons article about maximizing points. I don't have a link to it but there might be one on his web site.
www.spaceempires.net (http://www.spaceempires.net)
When you get up to speed playing you might want to try your hand at moding. That is really the major draw for many of us now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Thanks for all the replies!
@Granpa Kim - The minute I heard that tactical is absent in multiplayer I ditched using it in the demo.
@Puke - I was using MiM for micromanagement... Next time I'll shy from abbreviations http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
@Rengade13 - Thanks for the welcome! Looking forward to meeting in a game or 2. I must say that the RTH2 thread that you're a part in was a big reason I decided to plunk down the money for the game. It gave me a good feel for how a web game's settings are decided on by its players. Seems like an excellent way being that all parties are interested and refrain from dropping out.
@Atrocities - Thanks for advice to read Fyron's article! Maybe I'll play around with mod's later but for now I need to get competitive with the game itself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
@Iansidious - Just give me a little time... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Just in case you did not find it yet, here is a link to the location of said article: *link* (http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=Content&pa=list_pages_categories&cid=1)
Next, you should go to the Newbie Faq thread stickied at the top and read the Strategy Articles section. It has lots of useful info (as does the rest of the FAQ, though I would not suggest reading the entire thing unless you have a lot of free time on your hands http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ).

Woohoo! It ARRIVED!
I'm sad to see that PBW is having some problems... oh well... probly won't hurt to play a few more AI games before stepping out against human opponents...
Looking forward to meeting ya'll in some games shortly!

Pleased to meet ya Hojo... but when it comes to the football game you WILL be considered a mortal enemy. LOL that is until our new defence slaughters ya next season and having won said football game I will no longer hate all things Lubbock http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Hmm - did Mack Brown get fired? I must have missed it? cuz that's the ONLY way your T-Sips are gonna have a NEW defense that has ANY hope of stopping the Juggernaut that is Leeche's offense.
unfortunately Leeche's defense couldn't stop a 4th grade peewee league team made up of blind & paralyzed kids... so there is a good chance it will be a competitive game w/UT http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Nah Mack wasn't fired, but we do have a brand new Def. Coordinator that should take care of some problems. I'm just not a fan of Mike. Tech's strategy works well against mid tier XII teams and did beat us two years ago but I just don't think that offense will ever land ya'll in a BCS bowl.

Tech couldn't land in a BCS bowl regardless of it's offense, defense or season record... those BCS Bowls are meant only for the "Big" programs and will always find a way to keep anyone else out.
which is really why college football is rather boring to me... no playoff = no real point.
