I had the Jabber plugin for Trillian a while, but didn't have any Jabber contacts... I did a few test Messages to other mediums, then quit loading it. Kinda pointless to use it to talk to other mediums when Trillian already does http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If I were to use any instant messenger Id probably use GAIM because its GNU and SourceForge software, plus it supports everything already mentioned.
GAIM is a GTK based messenger. It is actively being developed and supports many common features of other clients, inlcuding many unique features. It also supports multiple protocols, including AIM (Oscar and TOC), Yahoo!, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Jabber, Napster, Zephyr and IRC.
<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Jabber is GNU and multi-IM also but not as much as GAIM

GAIM is cool too. It's just that Trillian is oh-so-much more purdy. /me pets the Trillian skins... GAIM (at least when I tried it out) had an ugly Java-type look, and with the setup I had, I wanted to utilize the graphics processor, not let it stand idle http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
And I like a bunch of the plugins (News, Weather, Clipboard Ext, etc).

In the discussion of multiprotocol IMs, I think you shouldn't forget about Miranda. Best thing in this IM is 100s of plugins which can expand the functionality up to eternity (well, almost). However it's not a ready-to-use solution, but it suppose user to be a geek.
Oh, and Miranda is GPLed plus it has a jubber plugin too.
