Why did I create this depository? Because I noticed alot of OT threads getting hijacked with O-O-T Posts that started to get confusing. So if you find yourself making an Off-Off-Topic post in another thread, transfer it here. I'll make sure it has a good home.
hmmm, is an Off-Off-Topic Thread actually On-Topic due to the double negative rule?
So if this is an O-O-T thread for O-O-T Posts hopefully it will help us get back on track.
Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
P.S. This thread is also a good place to pad your Posts to get those precious promotions. hmmm, when is my next promotion?

I got into a heated debate the other day about the Kobe Bryant case with a friend of mine. This man had him already guilty because he is a celebrity, and probably because of the OJ Simpson case. I had to refute this. Not because I think Kobe is not guilty, but probably because I despite generalzation (?). There actually is, based on the information I have managed to dig up, a chance that Kobe actually is not guilty.
But I digress, What I am actually trying to point out is, that this man questioned my sources for information! Now I understand that no-one can rely on any single source of information, I believe that any individual newspaper/website/TV news has it's own agenda, and so I don't rely on any individual source!! I read my local paper, I read the New York Times, I have no less than 2 daily news briefs come to my email, and I get several mags monthly that cover this and other kinds of stuff, and I search the web when I am curious about a given subject, but don't feel well enough informed. I like to think that I am well informed because of this. If any of you out there disagree, or if you agree and would like to add to this, please add to this reply, and let me know how to stay more well informed.

Now for something completely different.
To keep the peace in my home, I got an XBox. Yes, I know a console for games. Hear me out, though. It was that or upgrade my 6 year old PC, which would probably cost 3x what I can afford to spend. That's what I told my wife anyway http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Since I don't even know who Kobe Bryant is (is he a football player?) I'll start talking about Michael Jackson. There seem to be people who think "oh, he's just eccentric" or "He's a famous rock star, he couldn't possibly be guilty". I for one don't follow this line of reasoning. I have no reason to believe he is guilty (except the police must have evidence to press the case), but I also have no reason to think he is automatically innocent either. If I was forced to choose, and considering I don't have any evidence, I'd say he was guilty. It's an arbitrary opinion, and mostly because I don't buy into the automatically inocent mindset. I can see many books being published in a few years detailing Michael Jacksons fall from grace.
Edit: oh, and loser. You must really like the wheels on the bus.

Today is the Last day of my internship, and my friend just got home from Paris. Not only that, but it's System Administrator Appreciation Day (http://www.sysadminday.com/). Today is a good day.
The new iPods are supposed to have better batteries. I let it charge overnight, and it has been playing for six hours, and the battery indicator is at about half. Which, if it's right, is on par for a 12 hour battery life. We'll see if it holds up to multiple charges, but the warranty covers battery replacement for a year, then after that it's something like 40$. I'd say it's a good deal.

I was very dissapointed when they took out the light brown M&Ms. Those were always my Favorites.
A few years back, some friends of mine somehow happenned across a pack of M&Ms that they figured to be a couple years old, and that might have the light brown ones. Best gift from the "three years old and could have been bought at a Seven-Eleven" Category, ever.
Why does a place called "M & M Meat Shops" produce confections?

Ok, so I had a job around San Francisco this summer, and tomorrow I go back to Pennsylvania until school starts in Los Angeles. And there was a pretty decent sized party (about 20 people) at a friend's house, for a number of different occasions which all happened to be this weekend. And I had a bit to drink.
I probably won't be posting for a few weeks, since I'm not trusting my computer to be shipped across country again, and the computer at home is "broken" (I'll see about that when I get there). And there's only dialup. But I should be back before the end of August.

Of course, I know you're joking (I speak : ) ), but practicing this with limited characters to the nickname could be, but then if your nick is long, everyone shortens it anyway. Too much typing takes away from clever thinking, and typing clever things.

Further, the idling on #se4 is the same on pretty much ANY IRC channel. The difference is that we do not get many visiters (even during periods of high activity), so the idlers tend to stand out a lot more than in larger channels. Where is the square root button on the Microsoft Calculator accessory program? Somebody asked me... It's not there.
Then I noticed that it's there on the 'standard' view but not on the 'scientific' view. So if you need sqrt in scientific view, you can use the [x^y] button to raise the number to 0.5 power.
You can also use the following button sequence to do e^(0.5 ln x) to get the square root:
[ln] * 0.5 = [INV] [ln]
But the guy didn't like that option for some reason.

Most land-locked European nations maintain a few ships as a navy, which dock at ports of various allies or neutral nations.

'Austria' was not just that little land-locked remnant until recently. It used to be a major European power with several other nations under its control. The city of Venice (now in Italy) was one of their ports, as well as all the cities along the Adriatic coast of Croatia. Even though they were stripped of these holdings after WW I they probably kept their Navy out of a sort of pride/pig-headedness.

CGA and EGA.... that brings back memories. I remember one time when I was in school, the best PC in the lab was something like a 286 and I think it had EGA and we thought it was so great because it was better than CGA. When we played games, we wanted to use the machines with the color monitors, because most of the other machines were IBM XT's with green monochrome monitors. Some of the games ran incredibly slowly on the XT's.
Also, some games, every time we wanted to play them we had to edit autoexec.bat and config.sys and change the files= and buffers= and stuff to make them run, and then after we finish playing the game, edit the configuration back. I remember it was a hassle and it was sometimes hard to get some games to work properly back then because they didn't fit in memory, or it barely fit or something, I forget the details... that was a long time ago.

Oh, yeah, and some of the old machines didn't have the EDIT command in DOS, so we had to use the EDLIN command, which we all hated.
Back in those days, we used 5 1/4" floppy disks which held 360 K of data. Then those high-density 5 1/4" disks came out which held twice as much. We used to use scissors to cut a notch in our one-sided floppy disks so that we can flip them over and use the other side.
Then, later, when those 3.5" floppy disks came out, many people called them "hard disks" because the pLastic case is hard compared to those flimsy 5 1/4" diskettes. So those of us who knew better had to keep pointing out that the 3.5" diskettes are still called floppy disks, and they are not the same thing as hard disks.
When we formatted those 3.5" floppy disks, we had to type in some command in DOS like FORMAT A: /N:9 /T:80 or something like that, to specify the number of sectors and tracks.

I found it easier for people to accept that they were "floppys" if you showed them why they were called that. I kept an opened one around for the purpose.
Oh: They were called floppys because of the mylar that the data was written on.
Took folka quite a while to learn not to leave them in the direct sunlight. They seemed so durable.

Moore's law is still in effect. It is good for probably another decade or so. Microprocessors still have a ways to go before the transistors become so small that the magnetic fields created by the currents flowing through them become a major issue and rewire the circuits constantly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Sure they do. Get a server case, a server MB, and two CPUs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Many better servers out there have 2 CPUs. Intel Pentiums these days have "hyper-threading", which supposedly makes the CPU act like it were 2 CPUs in parallel processing...

The speed improvement will max out at about +80%, for bigtime number crunching.

Is it worth it for games? Doesn't sound like it. Thanks.
Well, games don't typically hit the disk, or they'd be unplayable on any machine.
Games do quite a bit of number crunching, to calculate vectors for bullets and collision detection, and all that.
It will help, but the graphics card will almost certainly still be your bottleneck.

The speed of your RAM will hold you back as much as the speed of the onboard memory of the video card. Almost no games (none, probably) actually use all of even a 2.0 GHz processor. The rest of the computer is too slow to keep up, so it inevitably has to wait, thus wasting cycles. Getting a second CPU really doesn't do much for games... Rendering 3D images in Wings 3d and such will definitely see a boost, though it might not be worth the cost of a new motherboard, case (most desktop cases won't fit a server motherboard too well) and CPU. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The first computer I ever used was a Commodore Pet. It had a small green monochrome screen, and a slow, slow tape drive. The programs were written in BASIC. The very first video game I played was on that Commodore Pet. It was Space Invaders, and the graphics were very blocky. But it was wonderful...
The very first word processor I used was called "Magic Windows" and it ran on the Apple IIE. We inserted control characters before and after sections of text to get formatting like bold and underline. I was so happy with it because a word processor was so superior to an electric typewriter. I learned to type on an IBM electric typewriter...
The very first graphics program I used was Print Shop on the Apple IIE. I used it to make title pages for reports and things. When I think back, I realize just how clunky those graphics were and how slow that program ran, but at the time I thought it was so great.

You will be drawn and quartered for even suggesting such a thing. "Don't need computers to do everything". You know better! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

So I went to Westwood (nice suburb-type area, home of UCLA campus) with a group of friends, to go to this really good cookie shop. And we're standing outside, and we see this Audi trying to parallel park on the street... the only problem is, the Audi is backing up into the space (like you're supposed to do), and there's a huge Ford SUV that's pulling in forward into the space as the Audi is backing up. Now obviously, the Audi has the space, so they're staying there with the back end of the car in the space, waiting for the idiot SUV driver to get a clue and park somewhere else. At this point, my entire group of friends knows about the situation, and is talking about it loudly, so everyone else on the street knows too. And for the next three minutes, the Audi is just sitting there, and the SUV keeps pulling back and forth, trying to fit into the smaller space and kick out the Audi. Finally the Audi driver just gives up and drives away to find parking elsewhere. Five minutes later, the SUV driver manages to get the monster parked, after one of the (scantilly-clad, female) passengers gets out and directs, while talking on a cell phone. Then the driver (also scantilly-clad, female) gets out, also on a cell phone, and the two proceed to walk down the street, each still talking on their phones.

Did you know that dolphins are so intelligent that within only a few weeks of captivity, they can train Americans to stand at the very edge of the pool and throw them fish?
Yes, dolphins are actually smarter than humans. Humans are only the third most intelligent species on earth.
The most intelligent species on earth, of course, are mice. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Only a certain type of mice, which are actually interdimensional beings masquerading as mice.
At least that's how I think it went...

I found it on the web in another set of forms that I frequent.

I went to a midnight showing of Kevin Smith's Clerks. Then, when I came back, a few of my friends tried to hook me up with a girl at a party... but even after about six shots (enough to make me a little tipsy), it wasn't happening.
HIJACKED! (someone remind me not to post after consuming alcohol later)

Guess who's computer wouldn't boot this morning? Yup, mine. I had to format and reinstall win XP, again. I'm getting good at this, I sure hope this doesn't become habit forming. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Try upgrading to win2k. It is far more stable, due to not being overloaded with bloat and garbage...
