Ok. So race styles (ship images, race images, etc. used in teh game) are now done using a 3D modelling package (artits choice, of course) instead of just doing flat bitmaps. I want to do a set for myself (which I'll most likely release for public consumption at no charge), but have never played with 3D modellers.

Can someone recommend one for me to try out?

There are several things you can use.
Myself, I use Povray in combination with Moray.
Povray is at www.povray.org (http://www.povray.org) and Moray is available (I think) at www.stmuc.com (http://www.stmuc.com)
Something like that

Okay, I grabbed these two the other day, and finally fired them up...wow. Now, if I can just figure out what the hell to do first... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/confused.gif

There is also BLENDER at www.blender.org (http://www.blender.org) which is not a ray tracer, but is a complete integrated 3D rendering program in it's own right. It used to have some functions held back for a registration fee, but is now 100 percent functional and free. It's not any easier to use than Povray/Moray, I'm afraid. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif 3D graphics are not a simple subject. What we really need is someone to post the "source code" for a ship set or two so us dummies can have a starting point.

Well, I wish I knew the secret to getting links to appear in Messages here. FOr some reason the bboard thinks it has to stick a zillion control codes in any html I add to the message, and it ruins the html..
