And a tip --
Consider putting a cargo bay in your colony ship design. 20kt of cargo bay will significantly increase the capacity for colonists, which can be a good boost for a new colony (especially if this colony ship is coming from your normally packed homeworld).

I am very new to Space Empires, so maybe this is an easy one. After I venture into a new System and send a Colony ship to claim a planet, any Facility I try to build says "never" for the time to build. I thought maybe I needed a Space Port first but it also couldn't be built.
What is the first step after colonizing a planet in a new System?

Make sure that the colony ship has population on it before it leaves a planet. You can do this one of two ways.
1)If you give the ship the Colonize order while in orbit of an inhabited planet, it will automatically load people before it leaves. Try not to do this on sparsely populated planets as you can occasionaly take their entire population with you and then you'd have another ghost colony.
2)Select the colony ship, and press the Cargo Transfer button up top. Click on the people on the planet to transfer them to the ship.
Alternatively, you could send the colony ship without people, and use a transport to bring them later (again, using the Cargo Transfer button).

Hi,
the same happend to me.
But, you have to transfer colonists into your CS. After it has been built, go to transfer cargo, then transfer people into your CS. After that, you can order it to colonize the new planet.
´Hope this helps.
