Mine building

I am playing the Demo game.
I built a ship with mine layers. But I do not see how I can load it with mines. If I go to the planet construction for units no options for mines are allowed. How do I build the mines?

You have to design them first.. have you done that?

Nope, didnt think to design a mine. I figured they were all the same.
