Simple answer: no. Shields only work in combat.
Which means they don't help against damaging warp points either...

Shields don't work against mines!? I think mine do! It also could be because I usually play with crystal tech and I usually have Crystalline Armor. But that still doesn't make sense... My C-Armor III only puts 15 points into shields and even Mine Warheads I have 50 points (don't they???)
I'm not positive 'bout the details (I'm at work), but I do know I routinely run into minefields with no mine sweepers on any ships and get out unharmed. However it (the game log) always reports that my ships took damage.
Does anyone know the details of mines and damage??

Crystalline armor has the highest damage level of all armors. If the damage from the mines is not enough to actually destroy the armor, it will still be there even though the mines did explode. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif There was a bug noticed with mines and colony ships, btw. The colony component is so huge that a single mine of any tech level cannot destroy it and so a colony ship would be an effective mine sweeper that could clear an entire minefield by itself (although everything but the colony component would be destroyed...) This was because each mine attack was counted as a seperate combat. If this has not been fixed, then crystalline armor will be very good protection against mines that do less than whatever damage level your armor has. Organic armor, too.

I have not double checked this since I upgraded to 1.19. I will check tonite and repost if no one else has by then.
