View Full Version : Is Anyone working on the default races?

I'm thinking that most people are waiting for after the next patch, but is anyone working on the default races, like the improved sergetti? I ask because if anyone is, I'll do them next in my continuing speech file creation.

The default races could indeed use some hand with their speech files. That would make them more unique. I'm already very busy with the EA speech file that I will hopefully finish for the next patch (buts awful lot of work).

Well, I am. I have already done Sergetti and Xi'Chung and I am planning on doing 4-5 races simultaneously right after the patch is out. It would be great if you could do speech files for them. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

EA Speech file? How many variations of the words 'hell' and 'damn' and 'absofragginglutely' are in there? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

"What do -you- want?" "I'd like to live -just- long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up into your lifeless eyes and wave like this..." *waggle* "...can you and your associates arrange that for me, Mr. Morden?"

Daynarr, which ones arre you looking at? Nothing that effects the speech files will change so I can get started over the weekend.

I just finished a HUGE Terran and Cue speech file. A bit more indepth than I had originally planned, but they're good.

The Terran is based on WWI/WWII political double-talk from the US and Britian.

The Cue is based on the same period, but uses Communist Russian and Nationalist Japanese speech. Adds some flair to say the least. Heck, some of the Russian is untranslated...

How about an extremely alien speech file, where the Messages are unintelligible?

Say, a good imitation of Shadow chittering, Tamaran metaphoric speech, or maybe a bunch of static from the Arachnids (i.e., Bugs) from In Death Ground? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

Hmm.... bugs. Wonder if there can be a 'devour population' advanced characteristic for when you invade a planet?
(Penalty: pretty much anyone will try to destroy you.)

Nyx - well, I would need Xi'Chung (the bugz buzzing talk) and Norak (very dark-religious talk). I haven't decided on the others yet but will tell you as soon as I do.

greghacke - that is great news. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
If you want I will include you files in the mod for these races. You need only tell me and send me your files to daynarr@usa.net. If you do that I will start working on both Terrans and Cue Cappa with the Norak and 2 other (still undecided) races simultaneously right after the patch is out.

greghacke: BTW do ya have those speech files available?

ack, If I wasn't so lazy, I would modify the Xenophobe file for the Brachyura http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif They aren't Xenophobic, just bloodthirsty and mean n nasty http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Try writing the sounds out that the Zerglings make. Its a mixture of growls and stuff.
A Firebat race would be awesome

Trying to make speech files for each of the original races in SE4 is plain insane. They take as much effort and time as the shipsets do IMO.

I'm really proud to have a personallised speech file for the UCE Fleets, when you're playing against them its kinda 'wow' - they are 'different', and it makes it much more fun.

My UCE speech files are also VERY personalied, in the sense that rather than using the %Empirename Expressions, I jsut wrote in 'The United Colours Empire' of just 'The UCE'. So if anyone trys to use them for any other fleet you'll get VERY strange Messages. . .

So leave it to fans of the game to do so on their free time and let Aaron focus on improving the game further.

I just wish I had some talent so I could implement some of the ideas I've posted.
I'm okay for minor modifications and tweaks here and there, but I don't think I'm able to make up entire races and such http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/shock.gif

Okay, the Bugs from Starfire would be easy as a speech file. Just a bunch of garbled text as the message since they appear to not have any form of speech that other races can comprehend.

The Martians from Mars Attacks! OTOH... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

I'm not so sure about random garbled message empires :-/

I'm not convinced that it'd work, but I suppose someone would have to experiment first!

BTW, The totally unintelligible would be really annoying to play against. However, a Version with a partly innacurate translator could be a whole lot of fun. Gets into that old Monty Python skit about the tourist with the deliberately miswritten phrase book. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif
