I just received this game today and I have a question about race specific technology research. If all of the allowable tech boxes in the Game Settings are checked, can everyone research all technologies, or are certain technologies still limited by race type? I haven't been able to find anythign specific about that.
Thanks

Welcome to the forums!!
Make sure you read the FAQs and strategy guides - I'd link it but the new forum still makes my head spin.
By racial techs I assume you mean organic/temporal/religious etc? Then you can only research them if your race choose that trait in the race set up.
Again welcome! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If you are asking, for example, if one can study Organic technologies because it remains checked in the box, you can't unless you choose that racial setup.
Is this what you meant?

Racial techs, defined as being the ones you get when you pay race setup points for them.
Let A be a racial tech
Let B be a normal tech, that has as a prerequisite, tech A level X
Let C be a normal tech, that has as a prerequisite, tech B level Y
If you paid the race setup points, you can research it normally.
If you did not:
- You can NEVER get any of tech A.
- You can never research any of tech B. But you can steal it from other players who have it.
- You can research tech C, but only if you have previously stolen level Y in tech B.
-----
Note:
In the unmodded game, all technologies are either of Type A, or are normal techs available to everybody.
Note 2:
If you uncheck the "allowable tech" box, then NOBODY can ever research that tech.
