Question regarding server

I'm thinking about setting up a server for a couple of friends to play on. (PBEM too slow, IP game blocked by firewall and routers)

Now, am I right that with the commandline there is basically a dedicated server available? If I want to play in one of the games hosted on that server, do I need a separate CD-key, or is the check for duplicates only performed between players? (e.g. I can have the same key as a _dedicated_ server, but not the same key as another player)

I think yes ... i remember an old post about that ... the server key isn't used at all

I'm pretty sure it is used... I couldn't get the server to work before copying in the key-file. However, you can use any key you like --- my server uses my private key, and I do participate in Online games...
