Is it just me or is the subject box smaller?
Anyway, I can get the screenshot window up, but I have no idea how to save the image.

Narf, in any windows program you can usually just hit "Print Screen" (next to the scroll lock and pause keys on your keyboard found to the right of the function keys.)
This copies the current screen to memory (the clipboard) and then you can open up most any paint program even MSPaint and simply 'paste' the screenshot into a new document. (ctrl+v is the keyboard shortcut to 'paste'.)
I hope this helps, Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Narf, nice image but perhaps you could resize it so that it does not mess up the formatting of the thread. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Nice fighter, reminds me of the Fazrah http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
And I hope you enjoy using Wings http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
BTW, if you want you can also render in OpenGL or if you have it Yafray - which is free at www.yafray.org (http://www.yafray.org) (don't be fooled by the low Version number, it's actually quite functional); you can also download plugins to render in Povray or Renderman compliant renderers, but the Renderman plugin is currently broken and won't let you put multiple textures on a single obect... a pity since it looks so easy to fix and Renderman renderers produce such nice output... they even let you use custom procedural shaders, and Aqsis (a free Renderman renderer, www.aqsis.com (http://www.aqsis.com)) even has a "bake" plugin to convert procedural textures to UV textures so you could use them with Starfury or SE5! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif

How do you use the OpenGL renderer? I've got the image in the window, now what do I do?

Hmm, it's not saving to a file somewhere? Let's see... oh, you have to hit the little box thingy to the right of "OpenGL" on the Render menu; that will bring up the render options window and you can choose to render to a TGA file, which should be convertible to a BMP or JPG or whatever you want by something like IrfanView.
To get a better render than OpenGL provides, you might want to download Yafray at www.yafray.org (http://www.yafray.org); Wings has pretty good support for Yafray rendering, and you get more options for the texturing, too, since it's a raytracer.

A spikey thing. Ed Kolis, I think, was telling me some of the stuff you could do in wings, so for some reason I did them all on one cube. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I hope I don't have to tell you what this one is. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

And that's it. There's a few more, but they aren't as visually interesting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Ok, um, how do I install yafray as a plugin?
Ed Kolis
August 19th, 2004, 10:05 PM
I like the bows - would make a good addition to any fantasy based mod with some textures on them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
To set up Yafray, just download it from www.yafray.org (http://www.yafray.org) and follow the installer instructions, then go into Wings and hit the Edit | Plugin Preferences | Yafray menu option, and browse to the location of yafray.exe. There's no plugin you need to install because Yafray support is built into Wings.

Narf, you could make Doga parts for Atrocities with Wings so his shipsets could look a bit more varied... I've been wanting to do that myself but I really don't know what kinds of parts to make, and converting them to the proper format is a bit of a pain - Wings doesn't natively support .DXF, which is the only way to get new parts into Doga, so we'd have to export our parts as .OBJ or .3DS or something and convert them with some converter tool... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
BTW, hasn't Atrocities "retired" from shipset making at least a few times already? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Hey Narf... check this out
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.scene-files/thread/<4126d419%40news.povray.org>/
If you export your models to Povray, here's a way to autogenerate UV textures for them from something called procedural textures, which IMO are a lot more flexible and easier to work with, not to mention having no ugly seams! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
Just don't smooth everything so much, because this method is REALLY slow - even the sample 750 triangle model provided with the technique took several minutes on my (admittedly dated) P3 1.2GHz machine... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Well it's kinda tricky actually... you basically have to run Wings' UV mapper on your model, export it to Povray format, then put your mesh data (the verts, faces, uvs, etc. that you see in the arrays) in the place of the mesh data that's in the sample, in the format specified in the sample (you have to get rid of the numbers that aren't in angle brackets) and render the modified sample with Povray... actually I did it a bit differently but this way is easier to explain that include files and stuff http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Uh, thanks anyway, but I think I'll just export it to milkshape and go from there.

Povray format is copy-pasteable? Ok, now how do I get wings to export to Povray? I looked at the export function and didn't see that option.

You need a plugin, but the plugin only works with the stable Version, not the development Version. Get the plugin here: http://www.midcoast.com.au/~rgcoy/software.html

What's the best 3d export option for keeping detail in wings?
Oh, and can you use vertex color to help texture and if so, how?
I checked the wings site, but it didn't seem to be in the tutorials.
Ed Kolis
August 30th, 2004, 08:10 PM
What do you mean "for keeping detail"? Exporting a file shouldn't remove geometry; all you might lose is some textures and such.
If I'm not mistaken, vertex colors are basically just an alternate way of texturing your models and in Wings you can't have both vertex colors and UV textures on your models at the same time; you can convert between the two, however, though you will lose detail when you convert from UV to vertex colors as there are many more points on the UV plane than there are vertices in a typical model!

Well, I remember converting one model to .3DS and loading it in wings and at least two of the vertecis seemed to have moved.
No unwrapping? I guess it's time to head into the wild world of texture generation. */me grabs a torch...

Ok, I got around to the UVMapper(Was reading a ST vs. SW site) and I've almost got it figured out, except I can't seem to get it to unfold all the way around, I get top-down views and stuff like that. Is there any way to do that except more Groups? Because I've seen textures that wrapped, front to back, I think.
Ok, there's those auvchart colors...But still not automatic.
Ok, so their are some automappers. Don't work very well, though.
It obvoiusly doesn't work off of the Groups set in the main window. I sub-divided part of it and it changed nothing.
