hey, i decided to create a few new ingame graphics for my upcoming mod. Here are a few examples. I hope to give the game a more "science-fiction" feel with those suns, as they look more "metallic" and more science-fiction imho..

what do you think ?

Uh well major question: Right now the picture shows at "attachment" in the topic of my post. Is there a way to make it appear in the post ?!

Yes. Use the Image UBB tags. You can click on the link in the Instant UBB Code to use a javascript applet to automatically create them from the URL.

intense, I really like them

They look cool, but why are they all eclipsed?

Baron Munchausen
August 28th, 2004, 03:34 PM
Heh...

Ed Kolis' observation that they look 'eclipsed' is based on the contrast between the body of the star and the corona around it. You need to make the star as bright as its corona. If that washes out the detail then you need to make the corona as dim as the star. We know that stars are very bright, but a point of light isn't interesting in a game. We'll just have to assume a convention that stars are always seen through the proper filters. /threads/images/Graemlins/icon29.gif

Well now that you guys mention it, yeah. It really looks like the light is coming from behind the "sun". Well thats pretty stupid. Then again i really like the suns, and since its my mod i guess i will stick with them anyway http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

The problem is if i brighten the "star" up, then it wont look half as cool imho http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

'Eclipsed' laf, you guys are funny. If it were 'eclipsed' the center orb would be completely black. It actually it looks like you are viewing the suns using proper 'solar' filters that prevent you from going blind. The swirl patterns are the visual effects of seeing solar flares.

At least that's the way I see it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I don't think they necessarily have to look absolutely perfect and realistic. Looking kewl is kinda nice. So, stick with it, like you said. (I like the lower-right the best...for some reason...LOL).

I would agree with (almost) everyone else in saying that I like them very much. Also, keep in mind colors of fire, too. Orange, red, white, etc.

I really like them, especially the one on the bottom right; looks dark and sinister. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Very intense-looking stars! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Great work, these stars look strange and alien, as if they belong in very distant solar systems.

I especially like blue #3, red #1, red #3, and green #1, #2, and #3. The blazing solar flares look really powerful. I don't think I'd want to get close to any of these stars though, I'd be scared of getting instantly fried. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Blue #1 and blue #2 look too "blobby" in my opinion. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I like all of them, but my personal Favorites would have to be the blue ones, but that's just my opinion http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

The largest red one (red #3?), looks like it would make an interesting (and to me, rather visually appealing) variation for the Red Giant system types.

Uh i guess i have to ask someone to point out what exactly "blobby" means. Seriously though, what do you mean "blobby" ?!

Fyron

A blob is a shapeless mass. "Blobby" would be malformed English for blob-like. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif You can find a definition of blob here (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=blob&x=0&y=0).

ah, at first i thought he meant the first 2 blue suns were to "blurry" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif my mistake, thanks Fyron

Good artwork, Ragnarok-X. I like the 2nd red sun most of all.

But. After few minutes I was looking at them, I couldn't restrain feeling that SOMETHING is looking at me from this picture. And I revealed this:

Is it some kind of subliminal message or just your photo? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

You could also say "Blobbish" or "Blob-esque"

Yeah, that's what I meant, blob-like. /threads/images/Graemlins/icon39.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Sorry for my sloppy English. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/stupid.gif
