Ok, so google seems to be filling me up at 6 invites to gmail about every other day. So if anyone wants one, ask and ye shall recieve.

Yes! Yes, please!

I have wanted one for a long time, but just a week ago my wife got one from a buddy at work and she has been rubbing it in my face ever since. I need to show her up!

Pretty please, with sugar on top?

Thanks,

Alarik

EDIT: and I'm more than willing to make a deal...hmmm...what do I have that an SE4 player might want...hmmm...

You're afraid of the privacy issues, I take it?

I can send you an invite if you would like.

How could Gmail be any more of a privacy concern than Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. are? They could all scan your emails and get private information...

AMF
September 6th, 2004, 04:21 PM
Would I like an account???!!! Is this a trick question?

RE: privacy, I agree, but many hold that gmail is a privacy issue b/c tyhey advertise...my beleif is that email is inherently non-private, no matter what, so, hey, get the most functional account...

Yeah, and it would help if you gave the email address you want the invite sent to http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Less work for me, after all.

Gmail has a cool feature: using gmail daemon you can mount your account as a remote file system!
I'm not sure about win, but it's reported (not by me) to work in linux.

If Gmail works with Mailers (Thunderbird, The Bat) I'd like to get an invitation too.

It does not yet support pop3. The FAQ leads me to believe that they plan on implementing it though...

I'm interested in IMAP support mostly.

Thats why I only use them for the messenger services http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
Not as stupid as I look... honest

If you really want, yeah, send me an invite, that way I can actually see it for myself rather than be getting it from 3rd party sources

Oh and if you are getting invites every other day, then only one thing I can suggest
www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com) (start saving up for SEV http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif )

Will
September 7th, 2004, 04:56 PM
Well, I don't want to do eBay, because I feel slightly obligated to invite people I know. Somehow selling it just seems wrong.

PS: And for now, I'm out of invites... if the pattern continues, I'll have six more by Thursday.

I would like to have one, please. You can put the invitation via private message or send it to mail in my profile. Thank you http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I need another e-mail account... my university e-mail I want to keep secret from now on, and I don't really want to keep using my hotmail e-mail which has a part of my old high school in it lol.

I'll pay you back somehow... maybe join in a game you need a replacement player in... brianeyci@hotmail.com =D

I assume you've all read this:

It is a sort of mail provided by Google. The site is available here (http://gmail.google.com/).

Dogscoff:
You're right... at first glance, it really gives me the creeps. Don't throw away anything. This really smells like abuse of privacy.

Alneyan:
Thanks for the link.

Everybody:
Thanks for the offer, but I'll pass.

I've read it. I've also read this (http://www.apfn.org/apfn/moon.htm). There are just some things that, while the arguement looks sound, the conclusions are completely bunk.

For one, their arguements about government access to email through subpoena applies to ALL e-mail services. Even if you run your own. The only difference with running your own is you get to know about the subpoena under PATRIOT, since you're also the administrator. As for other countries, if Zimbabwe decides to take control of some google servers in that country, sure, they might have access to some of my email. They'll also have royally pissed off a lot of people. And if the Zimbabwe government tried to just access *my* email (for whatever reason), you don't think Google would raise a stink about that globally?
Then there's the small arguement about tracking cookie which can be deleted at any time, nullifying the value google would get from it. And then a rant on the supposed evil-ness of Ad-words, when it's well known that advertisers just pay to have their ad show up on pages where certain words come up. Yes, that means "law" will bring up ads for law firms, even competing ones, and "perscription" will bring up drug importers, even in an article criticizing those importers. Amazing how a paranoid article can be seeming to call for an omniscient AI to serve up all our ads...

Anyway, I just had to vent on the tin-foil hat brigade for a while. I was only offering the gmail accounts, that doesn't mean y'all have to take them (invites are used up for now anyways). Who knows, I could be wrong, and now the NSA knows I'm a progressive leaning college student with interests in science, computers, philosophy, and music. I'm so scared http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

Where can I get me one of those tinfoil Gmail hats? They sure look nice. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif As already stated, the paranoia applies to any email provider... Gmail is nothing unique. Yahoo is now giving out 2 GBs of storage space for paid members and 100 MB for free members. Hotmail is supposed to be increasing their storage space, but I have not seen that happen yet...

Timstone
September 9th, 2004, 03:58 PM
Okay, sorry if I offended you.
So this whole thing is just one big advertising campaign to lure people to hotmail. I can live with that, why not take advantage of it? But I don't need that much room (1Gb http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif, that is a lot for just a e-mail account). I can't imagine they can offer that much space without any alternative motive (what, paranoid? Me?).

I shall alter my answer to: "Thank you very much for the offer, but I don't need it."
My apologies for making you a bit irritated.

Fyron

Their ulterior motive is to attract customers that are using existing free email providers...

Oh, no offense was taken to you, or anyone here. Just at the ones who actively try to spread their paranoia to everyone else about stupid things. It's good to realize that this isn't an entirely altruistic offer from Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, or any other free email provider, but to act like one is evil incarnate while ignoring the same properties in other services is just wrong.

And my invites were filled up a day later than previous estimates (mid-day Friday instead of mid-day Thursday), so I now once again have six invites. For whomever wants one, of course. Just reply/PM with an address (and appropriate bot confusion mechanisms like {AT} and -DOT- )

In addition to sending an email address in PM, please also include a first and Last name to address the invitation to. The name is required to send the invite. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Pssst. Just wanted to mention one caveat for all the SE4 players getting GMail...

It blocks PBW's zipped turn files! :O

I have filed a bug report on this...no response, at time of this writing.

Oh, and I also have 6 invites. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Instar

It probably blocks any attachments it doesn't recognize. My email account here blocks all attachments that are not .zips I think.

Sivran
September 12th, 2004, 04:34 PM
That's not it. It claims to block executables, even if they are zipped. My tests have shown otherwise--a renamed executable (I changed the extension to stufft) makes it through unfiltered.

Also, the ZIPPED pbw file was blocked but when I sent the .gam file itself without zipping, it went through.

Thus, it apparently does not filter on "unknown extension" ...
