Fyron has a great art work hosting ability over at www.spaceempires.net (http://www.spaceempires.net)
I just used it to upload three new images. I noticed that only a few other people have taken advantage of his hosting and that surprised me.
Take a look at one of the images I just uploaded.
Hold The Line (http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&albu m=Lastup&cat=&pos=1) And let me know what you think. Also be sure to check out all of the other images that have been uploaded by other artists. Some are down right awsome works.

I wish I could draw like that. I'd love to illustrate some of the Remorhaz battles someday.

We also have some very talented mice. Please do not attempt to link this comment with the rest of the thread; even I fail to see its actual purpose. It seemed like a good idea, but... Well, at least that will give me an opportunity of reminding myself the proper plural for "mouse" ("mice" and not "mouses"! *Slaps self*).

Hey Atrocities. Im a member of renderosity and i take a look at the daily gallergy almost each day. I noticed your work since a 1-2 weeks but at that point a didnt knew it was YOU who made the pictures (all from your star trek saga).
I have to admit i thought it could be make up by you though. So i just read this thread and took a look at the gallery at SE4.net and voila i instantly new that it was indeed you who created them at renderosity. ^

Good stuff AT, and welcome to renderosity. I don't know at what time you posted your pic, but when you browse the daily galleries it's allready back on page 11 and will soon be on page 12. That's one of the things about renderosity, they get a ****load of new pics every day and it's easy to get lost in the daily flood.

I think PSP is a good "replacement" for PS. It's very powerful. For my own part, though I own both (and just upgraded to PSP 9), I am more comfortable working in PS (though, given initiative, could learn to do the same things in PSP).
Now, what I HAVEN'T done is upgrade my PS to "CS" (or Version 8). I've upgraded every release till now. CS has too many complaints. So, having said that (also), if one was interested, you can get PS 7 for $200 - $300 these days.

And there is always The GIMP, which is free.
CS has too many complaints.

Not to get into a debate with someone as knowledgeable as you, Fyron (not intended as sarcasm but as a compliment), I do feel comfortable in the "graphics arena" so I'll say, "Yes, GIMP is free but isn't in the same class as either PS or PSP. Yes, it's free and THAT'S a GOOD point but it's just not in the same class."

Good question, PSP is my secondary tool, I mainly use it for the plugins and for file conVersion. My main program as you know is ArtGem. IMHO aside from not having the ability to have plugins, it beats PS and PSP hands down for ease of use.
Q: Did you get the download Version of PSP or the boxed Version? The reason I ask, is to know weather you have the manual in pdf Version of hardcopy?
Oh, and there are a ton of tutorials out there for PSP. a quick google search will find you a couple thousand.
Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
P.S. When I get a few mins I'll look into the layer thing, if you don't find out how before then, I'll give you a quick tutorial.

Inspired by TerranC's work. I wanted to make the weapon platform look like it belonged in the image. I like the look of the this image and will most likely do my weapons platforms like this for any new ship sets I might make.

Hmm... I follow this conversation with great interest.
I too are very new to rendering and the like. I would like to learn my way around with PS or PSP. I own PhotoShop 7.0, so I have to program, but not the expertise. Can someone help find me a nice toturial on how to make nice wics with this program?
I know it's not a very specific question, it's more like asking how the roadrules work, but still. Any help is appreciated.

I use purely PS 7.0 and I love it. It is very easy to use and to me it was not that hard to learn. I am still learning some secret tricks to the trade with this program but for the majority of uses I have no problems getting to where I need to go. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I used to use RealDraw Pro at home but I do not do much work at home anymore but it was a very, very nice program for only $50 dollars US. I need to get another copy of that for here at work...

Could you help me teach some tricks with PhotoShop 7.0?
Do you have tutorials, a bible or just good advise?
Ragnarok
September 16th, 2004, 11:29 AM
Timstone, I would be glad to help you out. What are you wanting to try to do? I do not have my own tutorials but I have many that I have found on the net and I have used them to learn how to work in PS.
Here are 7 sites with tons of tutorials on each one.
www.pslover.com (http://www.pslover.com/tutorials.php)
www.nk-graphics.com (http://www.nk-graphix.com/index.php?page=adobe)
www.stealthdesignz.com (http://www.stealthdesignz.com/index2.php?page=photoshop)
www.effectlab.com (http://www.effectlab.com/tut.html) www.invano.com (http://www.invano.com/?photoshop)
www.turorials.cn (http://www.tutorials.cn/index.php?cat=photoshop)
www.devppl.com/tutorials.php (http://www.devppl.com/tutorials.php?PHPSESSID=caf197acb8d978ce36bf1ecc96 e385b9)
My recommendation is to look through those sites and read through and study some of those tutorials. Start with some of the basic ones and then move to more complicated ones.
What you are wanting to do here is to see how they have used tools in PS to accomplish things. Then in turn you will be able to see how you can use the same tool to do something else.
If you have any questions let me know and I will try to help you out as much as I can. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Alrighty then! Thanks Ragnarok!
I want to give my 3D models a nice look. I can make the models, but I can't render them as nice as AT to name a person.
I have made the building and I gave it nice textures and all I have to do now is to add lights (and shadows) and a nice colour on the outside.
I'm going to try and familiarise myself a little bit with 3DSMax to see if I can add lights and colours more easily than in SolidWorks.

Yeah, I think it's interesting too. Looks very organic. Cool.
I never tried DOGA. When I tried to DL it once I got a very unwieldy stupid text thingie. I discarted it immediately. Could you elaborate a bit more on DOGA. How does it look, is it easy to use, any useful sites?
Atrocities
September 17th, 2004, 04:34 PM
I found DOGA to be very easy to use. Of course I have modified it with custome parts from other sources and use those a lot.
Basicly put DOGA is a lego 3d program. The nice thing is you can morph the objects to fit your needs. The only two things that DOGA does poorly are rounded surfaces, poly counts are high.
When exporting a finished ship to X format, the count was often so high that no one could use it in Starfury.
Timstone
September 17th, 2004, 05:33 PM
Well as you have noticed I can help you somewhat with that. Were the results to your liking? If not, please tell me, maybe we can do some more models.
I've found, and read, some reports about DOGA on the net. I also have read some things about 3D Studio MAX. Okay, it's a hell of a renderer, but the process of making models is soooo much more laborous than in SolidWorks. I think IŽll only use it to add lights and render the models IŽve made.
IŽll continue to read about DOGA and 3DS MAX, but I think IŽll stick with SolidWorks.
