View Full Version : Anklebiter Proposal
Slynky

Since Anklebiters game has stalled (and comments/votes from players hasn't seemed to yield anything), I want to get the ball moving for a solution to the game:
(1) Well, just continue (certainly one possibility)
(2) Agree on finishing positions without fighting it out. For example, I suggest the following order of finish: Rex, Slynky, AtomSmasher, Geo, Joachim, Deccan, Tesco, and Gandalph (easy since he withdrew and had to deal with Rex...GULP). I list this order because, as I see it, if everyone continues as has been discussed, Joachim...very strong...has no allies willing to stand with him and unless one of my partners breaks oath, he can fall easily. Deccan doesn't wish to fight and just wants to be a good ally. I won't attack Rex, AtomSmasher, Geo, or Deccan. I don't think Rex will side against me.
If people are willing to consider item #2 more than item #1, but are opposed to my suggested finishing order, then alternate suggestions are welcome.
It also occurs to me, like a lot of games, that some people, most likely Joachim, hate building in a game for a hundred turns and not having a chance to see what they can do in a nice big battle. IN that regard, IF we agree on finishing positions, certain people can agree to "test" a fleet against another opponent in space...a fleet of, say, 200 of the best ships. It wouldn't alter the finishing order any but it would provide some satisfaction and fun, I think, that some might like. Kind of like, "Meet me here with your best fleet and let's see how it turns out."
Anyway, I'm, open to suggestions (though I'm not the game master) to get this game settled. I hesitate to start a new game if this game will continue, as it takes me around 2 hours to do my turn each time. Let's do SOMETHING!

Well, with that ranking in option 2 I say we continue. That list bears no relationship to people's current strengths but a supposed outcome as you see it Slynky. In that case lets play it out and see how wrong you can be.

Didn't mean to get you upset, Joachim, as I have a lot of respect for your ability. It's just in this case, I don't see you in a position to do well considering current alliances and agreements.
Let me ask it another way: What do you see yourself finishing as? (bear in mind, I'm operating with the assumption I will have the word of my allies to back me up and not be backstabbed again...not entirely impossible http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Sorry about dropping the ball on this one guys. I guess Gadalph got fed up and left the game. Can't say I blame him. I'm suprised noone else has.
I agree that Joachim would probably beat me in a straight 1v1 fight given our current positions and strengths. Atomsmashers isn't ranked for this game, so we can leave him out of the discussion as far as ending position goes.
Given that I think we could revise the list you posted to Rex, Slynky, Joachim, Geo, Deccan, Tesco, and Gandalph.
From the emails I believe Tesco and Deccan are ready and willing to call the game. Gandalph has already left. Rex I think said he'd go with the group either way.
As I see it we need to answer two questions.
Joachim. Are you happy with third place or do you think you have a shot at taking out Rex or Slynky?
Slynky, if we decide to continue, are you staying or will I need to find a replacement.
Anybody else that wants to leave I think is in a weak enough position that it wouldn't destabalize the game tremendously to let them do so and we can even get by with AI control if we can't find replacments.

If the game continued, I'd continue playing.
As to positions, I was listing everyone in the game and a subset of that (removing the unrated players) would be the "Ratings" finish.
I only mentioned Joachim behind you because of our partnership (I wouldn't let you get beat up if I could help it and AtomSmasher, I presume, would like someone to "play" with). Also, their is Rex, another partner of mine. Not sure he would participate in a war against Joachim but with Gandalph out, what's he going to do with his 800 ships?
But, I don't really care THAT much about it and if you're ready to trade places with him, Geo, it's fine with me. After all, I suggested people offer comments http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

I'm just a very small fish in a big pond, and my apparent function in this game is to now interpose my ships between particle beams so as to prevent said beams from obscuring the skyline.
I'm fine with continuing, or canxing the game. Either way, I'm almost certainly toast.

Yes, we all have our lot in life. It's not a lot, but it's our life. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I think you guys should not reward/punish yourselfs with points for the rating system.
As it has done what we all hoped it would not do. And that is help determine the outcome of a game.
I for one would like to see this as the only time this ever happens.

I wouldn't say that. I might say it had some affect but I partnered with Deccan and AtomSmasher early in the game (for the life of the game). So, proximity determined who I partnered with. Rex was on the other side of me. Regardless of Ratings or not...did I want to get in a fight with him? I don't think so. So, what I did would have been what I would have done in any game, regardless of it being rated or not. Then came the "Geo and Tesco" situation where I was being told by the "Tesco Alliance" to help clobber Geo or I'd be history (so to speak) and being contacted by Geo asking (not demanding) for assistance and pointing out that if his empire fell, I'd have the "Tesco Alliance all over top of me. So, once again, I made a decision based on the game situation, NOT who is rated, who was not, who had the most rating points (etc.). And the final part of the game, trying to finish off Tesco and turning my attention to the biggest un-allied player in the game, Joachim, has nothing to do with Ratings. If Joachim weren't a rated player, it would make no difference.
So, I humbly disagree with you.
I for one would like to see this as the only time this ever happens.
Not sure I understand. Could you explain a bit, please?

Let's just finish it out - I think the outcome will be clearer in the next 10 turns.

Agreed. Rex, Slynky, Joachim, myself have all said we'd be willing to continue if everybody else is. Of the rest, if any of you wish to drop out, that's fine. If you want to keep playing that's fine as well.
With Gandalph gone and Tesco on his Last legs, something big is going to happen soon I'm sure. Rex and Slynky and Joachim will all be without major adversaries, so unless they are going to spend the next 50 turns mopping up the remainder of us small frys I expect they will be eyeing each other somewhat. How this will all be affected by the various alliances I don't know, but it will probably be interesting to watch. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
The game will be on ALPU, unless that becomes a problem with people not doing their turns. I should be able to get mine in this evening sometime.

Eek, I dropped out of this game Last year, so it seems alarikf has been doing a great job at this, so let's give credit where credit is due. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Well, HELLO, STRANGER! (smile)
Yes, he played a great game. To catch you up on it, when you dropped, I had no choice but to try to convert a lost ally to planets gained. Then alarikf stepped in. We warred a bit and he proposed a subjugation. I accepted and we went from there. He proved to be quite honest so I removed the subjugation. More turns passed and I gifted him tech and some ships to get him started. Since that time, he has been a great ally. You would be proud!

I lurk here sometimes, but I post quite a lot on the Dom2 board, so I'm not exactly a stranger. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Yep, the Ratings thing was a problem in the game.
So - Rex - does that mean you are about to attack me if the game is going to be over in 10 turns?

Sorry for being late with my turn fellas, I did most of it then ran into the same bug/problem I did Last turn - when I run out of fleet names the game hard crashes on me. I forgot about it, so I had my turn pretty much finished, then, boom. So I'll do it again later tonight or tomorrow night at the latest.

Is it time to come to an agreement on this game? 1300 ships and going strong, I'm actually tired of spending so much time on a game turn that really amounts to, as far as I can see it, wiping planets. If there is some surprise in store for the game leaders, it's fine to keep playing but if not, do we need to continue? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

You might try an email to Joachim. He's the "swing vote" on anything we might decide for this game.

I don't plan on attacking anyone I'm partnered with. They've all been great partners!

if this game is ending.....
congrats on the victors... I was a loser in this game.
I wish to recommend that another one start up and some people try it out.
It was a fun concept of a game.
It is really worthy of a repeat.

I would agree...though if you do well in the game, get ready for a LOT of empire management http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif.
