View Full Version : What is the etymology of your moniker?

I thought this topic would be fun. So, speak my friends!
The purpose is for anyone to tell the story of how you came up with your screen name for the forums. Also, some of you have ones I have no idea how to pronounce so you can even tell us that! Enjoy y'all http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif! Looks like I will have to go first.
Iansidious
I came up with this name just before I came to these forums. I wanted to sign up on the offical Star Wars web-site, in order to download things and get newsletters etc.
The whole time I could not find a nickname that has not been already taken( I tried to stick with a Star Wars themed name)! So, I came up with a system. Take a Star Wars character and the actor of the character and combined the two too make a nickname. I came up with a few misses, but not for long. I took the first name of Ian McDiarmid(sidious/palpatine) and stick it with sidious. I had it! Ian+sidious makes Iansidious! I liked it. So I used it and I ended up using it here. Thats my story. What is yours?

You mean, are we supposed to make any sense when making up a nickname?
So, I had in mind the Greek word "neanios" (young man, youngster) when making my nickname. But I altered the pronounciation and the spelling of my name so much the root is virtually impossible to regognise. Basically the declination was dropped, and the "Al" part was added in the end, maybe as a clever ploy to get near the top of the member list.
Oh, and the pronounciation is pretty straightforward: say it as you will, as I won't be able to hear you; even more annoying, I cannot actually hand out retribution should you fail in saying it properly. I tend not to pronounce the final "n" myself, but I cannot think of an English name where a "n" ending is not pronounced.

I picked my name because I knew it would be- and remain- unique on the entire internet. (Quick google check- yeah, it's all me.) Plus it rolls off the tongue nicely, and the use of two regular enligh words means there is always room for re-interpretation and punnery.

First name. Wasn't feeling particularly creative, and I thought I was only going to use these forums for SEIV beta way back in the day (and even then, I recall holding off registering on here until the Last few weeks or so of the beta). I thought the core SE community would stay at the fan sites, and the publisher's wouldn't catch on. We're all falible http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Fyron
September 26th, 2004, 05:06 PM
My name stems from the old SE Universe Ladder roleplay community back in the days of SE3. I used the same name from there on these forums to maintain ease of recognition. Everybody in those days on the SE Ladder used a full title as their nick name (such as Master Belisarius). It is not meant as some silly ego padder or anything... Imperator Fyron was the leader of the Kazharii Imperium (which was more of a democracy than an empire, but the names sound so much better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif). It is pronounced (non-phonetically) "fie- run." If you pronounce it "fie- ron" where "ron" is as in "Ronald" (with a phonetic "o" sound), the mighty legions of the Imperium will strike you down. Or something... yeah...
You can learn more about the Kazharii Imperium from it's very own web site: http://kazharii.spaceempires.net/. Please note that due to the SE Ladder being dead and all, I never went and made the site cross-browser compatible. The border images look funky in non-IE browsers... Also, some text areas are not aligned properly (mostly not centered where they should be). Oh, and I am especially proud of the ISN logo, which was painstakingly hand-pixeled. As were my SE3 shipsets. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Am I fine then? I have been pronouncing your name as "fie-jun" (with the same "j" sound as in Spanish) for the past year or so. *Ducks for cover, and runs like the winds*

My current nick stems from my Starcraft BattleNet playing days, where my moniker was TerranCadet. After I ditched Starcraft, I got to know Se4, then Se4 gold, then decided to post here on the shrapnel forums. Since I had to choose a nickname, I decided to reuse my B.Net name, but with the Adet in Cadet dropped, for reasons that have now escaped my mind.

Mine's quite simple. "Renegade" due to the fact that I like the word, and it fits me quite well, as I usually don't fit in with mainstream society. "13" is the most obvious part of all, its my favorite (and lucky http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ) number. September 26th, 2004, 07:27 PM
My name is from my most favorite game of all time: Final Fantasy VI. (also called Final Fantasy 3.) This is an RPG I have played over and over, spending many evenings, weekends, and all-nighters playing.
Near the beginning of the game, the main character, Terra, is trying to get away from the Imperial guards sent by the evil empire. She escapes into the mines, but is cornered, and is about to be captured. Then the Moogles come to save the day! Moogles are white furry creatures living in caves and woods. The names of the Moogles are: Mog, Kupek, Kupop, Kumama, Kuku, Kutan, Kupan, Kushu, Kurin, Kuru, and Kamog. The Moogles defeat the guards and Terra is saved.
My avatar is a picture of a Moogle. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

It's a combination of two pieces of music.
Raging Speedhorn - British Metal band that was playing on TV when I signed up, this random bit stuck.
Deadstar - A song by British Rock Band Muse that's a favourite of mine.
It fits together well in many ways. Raging Deadstar seems like an oxymoron and ironic, as a deadstar just wouldn't be raging in any sense. Also it just fits well for SEIV.
Usually on RP communities I use the name "Maliki Deadstar" as it makes things easier. (Note: Maliki is not my name, I just like it) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

tesco samoa
hmmm...
well tesco was my nickname back in the 80's
and well in university (late 80's and early 90's )I lived in a house where we put on concerts and called the place samoa. Each band that played had to play one Angry samoans cover song. As it was the only band that every one in the house had listed in their top 10 bands...
So everyone there called me tesco samoa
And in bbs days i used tesco... so back in the early 90's i updated it to tesco samoa.
Now I use it everywhere.
Also back around 93 to 96 I used to get all the email from that company called Tesco ( not the transport company in North America that we all know over here ) but the box chain in U.K. ( I believe ) I used to answer them and sign them tescosamoa. I soon discovered English people have no sence of humour http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

When I was still an active member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), I started a fighing unit of heavy fighters. The name of the unit was to be Bearclaw. Archers were to be called Teeth of the Bear. I took the name because where I live, our town mascot is the Kermode bear, a rare spieces of black bear that has white fur that only live in this part of the world. The fighting unit never got anywhere but I started using the name (with a small 'b') Online.
For those who don't know, the SCA is a mediveal recreation club.

Oh, and incase you were wondering, the Kermodi bear is NOT an albino. It is an actual sub-species of black bear.

My "etymology" is simple. I just got lazy and used most of my e-mail address to have a handle on here. I usually don't go by having my middle initial in my name, but when my server was creating my account, they asked for my first name. I gave Greg, as I prefer that to Gregory, but then they asked for my middle initial and then my Last name. They created my e-mail account using the info I gave them. If I do use my middle initial, I prefer using my full first name, but I didn't know how they were going to create my e-mail account that way. Oh well. I can live with that.
I was tempted to use my old handle I used when I lived in Phoenix and got my first modem. I was known as Nanoc back then, but when I tried using that name on a couple of sites after I got my pc, I found out a lot of people were using that handle. So I'm just using gregebowman for most of the sites that require a user id.

I DungeonMastered games a couple of decades ago and people had a hard time coming up with names. I cringed at hearing people use Conan or Drizzit. (I know, strange for a guy named Gandalf)
Anyway I would tell people to write out their full name, and maybe the well known one they wanted to use, then scramble the syllables around. It usually generated a couple of very unique fantasy-world names which still felt personal and "themselves". And often had a feel of a race or class to them.
So I often used Ganthony the Wizard, Ardony the Ranger, Gardell the Paladin, Garker the Merchant or Thief, etc etc. They all felt very personally named because they were my name just pieced together different.

Schizophrenia is not Multiple Personality Disorder. A person with Schizoprenia has disordered and illogical thoughts. A person with MPD effectivily displays multiple personalities in the same body.
While a person with Schizophrenia can beleive there are other personalities in their body, in MPD the personalities appear to actually exist and not just be random figments.

I've been told that the root of my real life first name (Tyrel) is that of the Scandinavian god of battle (Tyr). You're into mythology, is that true??
Yes, Tyr was a norse (viking) war God, who was the general of all the Aesir's (the Gods') armies. His most famous story is the one with Fenris the Wolf, a giant monster sired by Loki (the ambiguous trickster God) and a giantess. Fenris had a sibling called Jormungund, a giant snake that circled the world with his tail in his mouth. Anyway, Fenris was growing bigger and bigger and hungrier and hungrier, and the Gods were afraid of him, so they decided to tie him up.
They tied him up, but he broke the bonds, so they tied him up again with stronger chains, but he broke those too. In the end they had some magic chain made that wold be strong enough, but this time Fenris refused to be chained up. They said it was just a test of strength and that they would untie him if he couldn't break it, but he didn't trust them and still refused. In the end they only got him to agree to being chained up by saying that one of them would put their hand into his mouth as a symbol of faith. If he failed to break the chain and they refused to untie him he could bite off that hand. Tyr volunteered for the job and lost his hand, but Fenris stayed tied up until Ragnarok, the final battle, where all bonds are undone. Fenris was mutually killed by Odin in the final battle, IIRC. I'd have to check my sources about that, it could have been Thor.
Anyway, the story with Tyr and Fenris is probably where the Italians get the phrase "In bocca al lupo" (into the mouth of the wolf) meaning "Good luck".
Othaglot & Cane readers may feel a nagging recognition at the phrase "Bocca al lupo". Chapter 23. A stylised Jormungund appears as the symbol of my Viking shipset, and in the O&C story as a symbol of the Jormungund clan. Coincidence? I think not...
Read the O&C story here. It's just a few clicks away from the shipset, too. (http://www.dogscoff.co.uk/fiction)
EDIT: Now that I think about it, "In bocca al lupo" is probably more to do with the story of Romulus and Remus, the orphaned twins who were raised by wolves and subsequently went on to found the city of Rome. Oh well.

Put Bluntly, there are people on this forum who are Schizophrenic. I won't name them as It's their life and it shouldn't be talked about without consent. It's not us super-analysing anything, it's the fact you could be offending somebody here who has Schizophrenia.
To name one of these people: Me. I'm not offended by remarks like that but it is annoying when people inadvertently say something not true about the condition. I'm just saying be careful what you say on those kind of topics, If arguments erupt it spoils the community, and we rarely have them here.

Actually it was the fact he completely mixed up two different conditions, as Narf pointed out below. This all started with the media wrongly using the word and you'd be suprised how many people make the same mistake, which can cause hell I can tell you, Ignorance breeds Ignorance. Try and tell someone you're schizophrenic and too many think you are some "crazy person" who has multiple personalities.
In Other words, discuss it all you like, but please if you want to use somewhat inappropriate references get them correct at least!
But lets not hijack the thread too much.

My name coems from the massive back history files provided in Mechwarriors 2, which unfortunatley will not work on my computer. I believe he was a high ranking general in one of the Inner Sphere houses...
Kerensky was the leader of the non-Bolshevik portion of the Russian Revolution, later exiled into the U.S. (better of than many of his compatriots, but he still lost).
In the Battletech Universe, which is much more defined in the old Mechwarrior RPG books and the novels (Read the Stackpole ones, they are the best.), Kerensky was the general who defeated the usurper who killed off the Last ruler of the great Star League. He was the head of the military at the time, and so most all who didn't follow the usurper went with him in the war.
After he defeated the usurper he determined that the Star League was dead and that the separate houses of the Inner Sphere would war against eachother with no end in sight. Since he was still in control of the majority of the military (Roman general style), he decided to leave, in an attempt to limit the ability of the others to make war.
We don't hear about him again until the Clans show up, who are descended from the self-exiled military and hold Kerensky and some of his descendants up as godlike heroes.
Also, the Black Widow, a mechwarrior of great renown, was named Natasha Kerensky.
My own name is from staying up too late playing Civ2. I began to name my people The Losers because it seemed funny at the time and it grew to be the handle I favor for games.
I especially like it because of the way people would react to it at LAN parties.

Arakiel, I'd hate to have something as minor as this put send you away from the forums. For here we have some of the most tolerate, well-informed, and just plain decent people I have ever had the pleasure of talking to.
However, it is definitely true that there are some subjects that some people find offensive. Personally, I don't think I have many, but a lot of people with mental illnesses find it to be a touchy subject. Those who do not suffer from them don't understand it. I know that I didn't until recently, when I finally had to admit to myself that I had one. I dont' mind if people make jokes about it, seriously. But some people do mind, and we all have to respect that. I'm not saying don't make a joke, but simply know that if you do, some people may correct you, or tell you it was offensive. However, that will very rarely happen around here especially, and don't take it personally.

I find it amusing that we've gotten off on a tangent about grammar here, but since the question came up it made me curious and I had to check the "manual." Although the use of "an historian" is commonplace among historians (we're an odd lot), technically you are correct Fyron. According to the Chicago Manual of Style, "an" is not used before a word that begins with a consonant sound (y, h, and w included). This is the style for American "English," of course, I don't if it's true for real English. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

My name:
Few years back I came across a simple website creation site called FreeWebs. Back then, I was playing Empire Earth a lot, and especially liked the map editor. So, I decided to make a site with ideas and information regarding the map editor for EE (in that time I wasn't really human yet). Somewhere on the site, I put down my e-mail adress for contact (no-one to my knowledge has ever even seen the site except for me, but like I said back then I was not really human.). However, I thought that putting down my home e-mail adress was a bad idea, so after a day or so I went to Hotmail and had to decide on a name. I thought that, since EE is a strategy game, something with "strategy" would be nice, and eventually I came up with "Strategia In Ultima", which is resemblant of "Ultimate Strategy". The name stuck.

Hmmm, interesting question. Back in the dark ages of my role-playing days (the original D & D, not advanced D & D), my first character was a fighter named Ragnar.
He was dubbed Calthalion (means to shine strong/dauntless in Quenya) by an elven NPC run by the DM (he loved Tolkien, almost every human character got an elven moniker, like Gandalph was Mithrandir to the elves), so he became Ragnar Calthalion.
After doing some Tolkien research of my own, I changed it to Kalthalion, and years later tweeked it to Kalthalior in another fantsy RPG to denote the title "High/Supreme Commander". Been using the Kal part for some time now in other games/forums - if you see Kalad & Kalax it could be me.

From a conversation with my girlfriend about James Bond after consuming far too many mind-altering substances. We got to thinking that 006 was probably senior to 007, and began working our way down the list until we reached 000. Pronounced out loud in the Bond tradition you get 'Double-oh-oh' (sounds a lot like uh-oh). This struck us both as ridiculously funny and worth remembering so I scrawled it onto my arm before succumbing to the effects of overindulgence. The next morning I read it as Agent 0=Agent Zero, and figured it sounded pretty cool as a monkier.
Agent Zero is also the name of a character from the X-Men comics, a rather rubish band, and the founder of a shadowy organization in 'Hell is for Heroes'.

It is such an informidable and threatening name. :} Then I wanted a icon to go with it and found a picture of a Beta (AKA Samurai Fighting Fish) on the net (tried taking my own photos - who knew taking fish photos would be so difficult! ). I thought it would be cool to have a fish in space. So I cut, paste, edited and hours later came up with a wonderful picture. Too bad the picture had to be shrunk so small that I can't tell what the heck it is. Maybe someday I'll come up with a better icon - comparable to some of the wonderful ones you all have come up with.

The etymology of my moniker... well, it's the main character in my favorite Tolkien Tragedy: The Tale of the Children of Hurin. Most people already know that. If not:
http://www.lotrlibrary.com/racesofarda/turin.asp
The name Turin means "he who desires mastery" and Turambar means roughly "master of fate." So the name seemed to fit well into the Grand Lord/take-over-the-universe thing.
My avatar is a Common Mode transcription of the name in tengwar letters. I pasted it into MS Paint and put some color behind it, then had DEG do his magical frame/lightsource thingy to it.
My Empire's name, Aa' Turam, is just a play on the roots of the Sindarin, as is the name of its citizens; the Tura'amni.

Interesting thread...
I've often wondered where some of these names came from, so it's only fair that I add my own brief tale.
As I see has been true in several other cases, my moniker is the result of searching for a name for internet use. I started joining a few sites while I was getting my computer science degree, and we were probablly talking about ciphers in one of the classes, so that part of the name just sort of fell out of me at the time. Not only did I find my chosen name to be taken, it was taken in plenty of variations. So, undaunted, I added the extension 7071, which is merely the first four digits in the sine of 45 degrees (or half the square root of 2), and a number that I remember. Thus, Cipher7071.
