1-Moray is an excellent shareware program (about $65 us..depends on its rate vs the German mark), pov-ray goes with it (renderer) plus you'll need a decent graphics program (paint shop pro or something like that by Jasc is pretty good, relatively cheap too).
moray available from: http://www.stmuc.com/moray
pov-ray I got from: www.cnet.downloads.com (http://www.cnet.downloads.com)
2- Include a minesweeper with your fleet/scouts... http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

15 sweepers is good...
until you find a minefield with 16+ mines.
After you lose one minesweeper ship, try sending in two together; if you lose both, try three, etc.

depends on minefield size...I have run into (rarely) well over 100 mines in a field...
I usually find out the hard way though...fleet go boom....tears....

I haven't used mines yet.
Are you saying that if the minesweeper ship dies, then it sweeps ZERO mines???
mottlee

A mine sweeper ship will sweep the maximum number of mines it is capable of sweeping before any remaining mines begin damaging ships in the fleet.

I don't think you've run into over 100 mines before, because I think there is a limit on mines in a sector. I went to a purely defensive game just to try some things out the other night, and went mine-crazy. Just kept spitting out mines as fast as I could. Once I had 100+ mines over a particular planet, placing any more resulted in an error that said that there could only be 100 mines. However... If I place 99 mines in orbit, and then turned around and put more than 1 in...the mines would go into orbit, BUT subsequent attempts and putting up more mines failed with the Only 100 mines error (even thought I might now have 130 or so mines in orbit already! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif)

Is SO CONFUSING http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif LOL I would think that I would at least get a mesage telling me it cleared some mines

To the best of my knowledge, you *WILL* receive a message telling you how many mines you sweeped before your ship was destroyed.

I think Mine Sweeper III's sweep 7 mines each... so 15 sweepers would clear 105 mines... Haven't checked MS V's yet (haven't researched that far).

Minesweepers sweep mines according to their level, unless I missed something in the latest patch. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Sinapus, you're right. I was thinking 7 because I have 7 sweepers on my minesweeping ships. Which means 15 MS III's would take out 45 mines... still a pretty good number, and much better than just 15...

Hmmm I think you do not under stand (or I don't) the mark V sweeper sweeps 5 mines and I have 15 on a ship, So it should take out 75 mines and with 2 ships at 75 thats 150 yet I still lose them

So either it's a bug, or you're dealing with an AI that lays mines like I do. (And adjusted that limit in settings.txt to have more than 100 mines per sector.)

Is there a possibility that you have put Mine Layer components on those ships instead of Mine Sweeper components.
If not, you may have found a bug. You could send a mail to MM with the description of the problem and with the save game (save game is VERY important).

Yup I did, sent save game to MM on another issue tho the mine thing was there too, have started a new game to see if it still dose it.
Yes they were mine sweeper comps Thanks to all for help
