Remember this picture (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=300062&page=1&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)?
Perhaps you remember this one (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=297811&page=3&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1) as well?
I'm ashamed for not having said it earlier, but although I created the pictures, the ideas behind the pictures were provided by Puke (for the first one) and by SuicideJunkie (for the second one). The thing is I never have any good ideas on my own; I usually end up trying to manifest other people's ideas onto a picture using my models and doga effects. I am ashamed of that, and I fear that I may never overcome my stunted imagination.
The good thing is that you can feed good ideas into my brain, wait a while, and see the final effects! All you have to do is provide the imagination, and I'll do all the hard work for you! You don't like my ship models? Heck, I'll create new ones for you on the spot as long as you provide a description for them!
So to sum it up: TC is unimaginative - TC knows DoGA pretty well, I guess - You feed your ideas for anything Se4 you want to see in a 800x600/1024x768/1280x1024 format into TC's brain - wait a few days - and voila! (Almost) Instant wallpaper.
So if you have an idea, (Whatever is in your head is, on a 99.9% chance, good) write it down here and let me do all the work!
I'll be awaiting your ideas.

You can use this idea as the Last resort:
There are plenty of Online galleries with military art, e.g. Military Art (www.military-art.com). Find a picture with interesting plot and recreate it in the space enviroment with your own models starring.
Plagiarism? Sure.
Now add some objects to the scene, or remove something, change point of view (camera position) - make your scene different.
Plagiarism? No, artistic remaking http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Start with a concept - Say - Robots. Then refine - Two armies of robots. Then, determine terrain, atmosphere, use those to determine types of robots or the other way around and so on. Use the anylitical facilities to assist the creative facilities, not replace them.

No, not original in idea but I am sure you can make nice original artwork for it.

I would die for a pic that shows a ragtag bunch of human ships fleeing Earth as it is destroyed by Klackon warships.
[All my races are based upon the remnants of humanity (the "Diaspora") who fled Earth during the Earth-Klackon wars (when Earth was eventually nuked by the Klackons) - that was the first PBW game I played...]

I have a rather large story that you can freely use for any ideas. Lots of battles and that sort of thing.
Aiken

You could like one these ideas (or neither of them):
1. Race.
Plot: 2 ships (different shipsets) are competing with each other in speed.
Aim: distant planet (probably with small finish gate on orbit).
Losing ship is forcing its engines (bigger exhaust, or more intensive color).
Additional details: glowing buoys (represent lane direction), audience (other ships).
Visual fx: motion blur. It's a must have imho.
2. Head-on crush.
Plot: 2 ships (again) are flying towards each other on high speed. Someone have to turn aside, else...
This kind of scenes is quite popular in Hollywood movies.
Additional details: they can fire to each other, burning hot front shields, something in the backdrop (planet, space battle).
3. Burn Earth.
Plot: Big ship is falling to earth (preferably to the big town).
Ship surrounded with plasma cocoon, it's almost destroyed and scattering to pieces.
Additional details: missiles starting from ground to intercept and destroy the treat.
4. Steeplechase in asteroid field.
Plot: small ship manoeuvring in asteroid field. Hostile ships (fighters) colliding with asteroids and each other. Explosions. See SW's Millenium Hawk hiding in the asteroid field for great example.

A huge beam coming out of the clouds from the sky that busts a hole in the ground... near the ground all the buildings are falling into it and people are scurrying about trying to avoid being swallowed by the earth... maybe a lot of fighters in the sky in the middle of dogfights, a few of them accidently running into the beam and being incinerated...
heh heh

Heres an idea, have a ship raise out of a hanger on the ground with weapons shooting at it and have little weapons inplacements on the ground shooting up.

How about this:
Peaceful, uncolonized forest world.
Rocks and trees and a woodland creature or two hopping/flying past.
Up in the sky, a large, close moon full of vaccuum breathers is being attacked by somebody else.
Colonel
October 6th, 2004, 07:34 PM
that would be a good opener to a scifi show or movie. Not for a pic because you would have to move the camera view to see the ground and slowly move up to that

A camera at ground level, looking up past the critters in the trees to see the spacebattle would work... probably best at night, I guess.

Idea: Big Dreadnought emerging from a WP and being ripped apart by the Starbase sitting on top of the Warp Point.
Out of curiosity, how hard/easy is it to come up with new materials in DoGA? I've been working in Bryce 4, which is pretty good at coming up with the basic shapes for things, but creating textures to use in it is a serious pain.

By materials, I assume you mean textures? Basic colour and and model properties are easy to set in doga; although somewhat limited, you can mostly get what you want easily. Textures themselves though, are compared to other 3d apps, are extremely limited; there is no mapping; and there is almost no control over how the texture will be seen on the model.
The textures I used for that picture posted a while ago were actually taken (read: stolen http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif) from the net and games, and edited with photoshop 6.

I would just like to say that making contrails in doga is a pain in the behind; It never looks right, and it never comes out well.
Nevertheless, I think I managed to somewhat respectably do this scene, with contrails to boot.

A huge space battle scene with hundreds of ships. Or a ship crashing into an ocean. If you could do a ship burning up like the Enterprise did in STIII that would be cool too.

I do the same thing myself actually. You can sometimes end up with interesting looking textures from the most mundane of things. I remember making some very odd looking ships by taking a picture of a dog, cropping it down two a squre of fur and using it as a ship texture. Ended up looking very cool & metallic. BTW, you have any preferred places for pulling cool textures for ships, or am I asking the magician to reveal his secrets?

Well, I found one texture that I have come to use repeatedly on google; one other was generously donated by a dear friend of mine, and the others were taken from the game Freespace 2 using the Descent VP manager.
As you can see, I don't have one good reliable source for textures; I just pick them up as I go. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

That planetary assault pic is AWESOME. It makes me wanna pull out the easle (sp?) and go back to painting. I used to be just floored by the stuff in OMNI Magazine back in the eighties when I was a youngster and spent a lot of time trying to master those atmospheric effects to no avail.

Are you still looking for input on space pics? Would you be interested in a bit of a shipset project? My Dark Nova 4 mod has many added ship/unit sizes. I suck at CG. I was hoping to add to my mod the new vehicle sizes for the standard races. Just additions to the existing shipsizes of standard races that match what I've got in my mod. The mod is on Fyron's torrent tracker as well as PBW mod downloads section. I've also got an Excel file that lists all the shipsizes and their bitmap names that the mod uses.
Feel free to PM me if you want more details.
edit: I've attached the Excel file that lists changes to the Dark Nova 4 mod incase anyone is interested.

np. Thought I'd ask. Just to clarify, it's not new shipsets or even entire shipsets I'm looking for. Just more for the standard races. Abbiddon, Amonkrie, Krill, etc. For example: My mod increases the number of standard shipsizes to 27, not including 5 Worldship sizes.

Hey Turin, I was just cruising through and happened upon your picture of the science ship, and thought to myself, that is one sweet looking ship. One could probably come up with a shipset based on that one.
Did a little fiddling and came up with the attached. The basic shape is there, at least. Don't want to get too into it because I'm away from home and using a demo of my modelling software. Which also explains the watermark on the attachment. Anyway, if you like it, let me know and I might be able to start proper work on it next week...
