No, I think its trying to access hardware directly and doesn't like WinXPs "simulation" of direct hardware access.(I have WinXP home)

I loved this game long ago, perhaps I should give it a go again and let you know if I get it working on my XP Pro box. There is something to be said about stealing from the store at night and selling the stolen merchandise back to the same store the next day. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

LOL, I loved the incredibly huge random dungeons that they would have.
I never could steal very successfully because while I wouldnt get caught and would rise to decent lvls in the mage and fighter guilds with some standing in the temple - they always gave me the "Your standing is not high enough" and guards would chase me down on sight. So I only used security in the Dungeons

BTW - Arena can be downloaded free from

Thanks. I couldn't find that link on the main site so I thought it had expired.

I'd like to get it working on XP Pro myself, I really miss this gem of a game. The whole stealing and selling to the same store trick made me laugh so many times I still think its funny. And the cries of "Halt! Halt!" filling the air, ahh those were the days...back when I played Space Empires 2.

I seem to recall I had it working under XP. But it could have been with the old Win 98 instead. If it did work with XP, it required to trick Daggerfall into not detecting Windows, and then all was fine.
I am pretty sure it was with XP though, since 98 has disappeared from my computer a long while ago. Of course, if I am the only one getting Daggerfall to work on XP, then I guess it means I am quite mistaken.

Neither of them seem to want to work with dosbox on my computer.
Of course, if you have some money, you could just buy another hard-drive. A second-hand, 10gig one would do easily. Then, put windows 95/98 on it. Problem solved. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

You can make repartition of your main hard drive, convert new small patition to fat32 and install win9x there. Although I'm not sure, whether it will overwrite nt bootloader or not.

Probably will. Just do an emergency repair installation of XP afterwords and it should clear that up...

Yep, I have it working under XP, but the images suck under XP.
If I remember over the weekend, I note down the settings, assuming I didn't uninstall it.
You have to play with the Memory settings and change it to run under 95 Mod, if I remember correctly.

That was my results also. All that work to get it to run, then I deleted it. It ruined all of my fond memories of the game.
Im still REALLY hoping for a decent sequel. So far all of the morrowind stuff has removed my favorite parts of Daggerfall

Plus the annoying fact that it's really hard to play morrowind without you're guild asking you to murder or steal. At least in Daggerfall if you didn't like a quest you get get another one. There might have been some reputation loss, but I always re-loaded anyway.
I'd say go with my second-hand drive idea.
