View Full Version : Which planet/atmosphere type do YOU pick ?

Hi everyone,
just wondering, what kind of planet and atmosphere do you usually type when playing against AI or on pbw ? I usually stick with gas giants, either methan or carbon dioxide, but lately i have discovered that using a rock - none combo cna be pretty good, too.
So tell me, what do you usually pick ?

How do you type an atmosphere?
Seriously, after seeing the distribution in the Dertran game, I've started going with ice and CO2, except when house rules specify otherwise. I may switch to methane, though, as that choice seems to be even less common.

In stock, there is a bug that gives a slight edge to rock-methane (by taking a little away from ice-methane). ie, the odds of finding a rock-methane planet are slightly better than finding any of the other rock atmospheres (besides rock-none). Thus it gives rock-methane an advantage in the early game, but evens out in the long run (when the odds of finding an ice-methane planet are slightly reduced).
Now, the impact of this is small, but, since I am a play-it-by-the-numbers min-maxer power-gaming munchkin, I almost always take rock methane.
I also consider rock-none if I think the game will be "over" before everyone gets all the colony tech.

I usually (but not always) go with the good ol' Rock - Oxygen. I like to think I can breathe on my breathable worlds http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Rock/oxygen.
The planets just look Earth-like at first glance, so my first image of a system gives me the impression of what it holds for me.
I don't worry about planet distribution for PBW. People trade population and colonization types all the time, so any benefit tends to become diluted eventually.

In KOTH (or similar games), I go for Rock/Oxygen to try having the same atmosphere as the other player. The point is to avoid giving away my breathers, which is something I love to do.
Otherwise, if I expect to do some population trading, I go with Rock and Hydrogen or Carbon Dioxyde. I pick these uncommon atmospheres just to have an edge when trading population, since there will be fewer such Empires, and I could even be the only Empire with one of these atmospheres. It rarely works, and does not really matter, but since you can trade population around, it amounts to the same in the end.

The larger the planet the better.
Gas Giant is the way to go. With advance storage, you get 30 space on a huge gas giant planet. I haven't played PBW much and have only completed a couple games so far. But it seems that with the bonus percentage facilities, concentrating your facilities is a good idea.
Also less planets means easier defense.
Gas Giant is possibly a bad idea on small maps. With one game with a small map, I haven't been able to find many suitable planets.
In my KOTH game, I played rock/none. Besides morally justifying population dumping, every small moon becomes a tiny breathable planet.
<edit> I guess it depends on playing style. I like to fill one planet with one type of facility. Less hassle </edit>

I almost always go with Ice/Methane when playing against the AI; because there are fewer planets at game start. Makes it a little more of a challenge.
The AI is OK, but I try to give it more advantages (or myself more disadvantages) just to make the games Last a little longer. (Don't use all your racial points, max AI bonuses and difficulty, etc.)
EDIT: Hey, I just noticed tomorrow is my 4 year "birthday" for this forum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Methane or oxygen, rock or gas giant.

I want a planet that is a vaccum and has no atmosphere. Oh wait, we already have that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Rock Methane or Rock Hydrogen, depends on how I am feeling that day (though RH is becoming a bit more common of a pick for me lately).

This should have been a poll, a bar graph of Favorites would have been nice. I expected someone to shoot down rock/oxygen for some reason I'd missed. Instead, it seems pretty popular.

I tend to play defensive so I go Gas mostly. And I like to trade for full colony ships and transports so I can make full use of all planets so Hydrogen if I can make it fit with my impression of the race Im playing. Im trying to find a nice balance between plenty of worlds I can populate while not matching other races in the game if possible.
I tried Rock/None recently but didnt find it enjoyable. So I will probably return to Gas/Hydrogen or Gas/CarbonDioxide

I avoid rock/oxy simply because it is so popular. It cuts down on your colony tech/population trading potential.

Actually that is exactly why I would shoot it down... Too many people take it. You lose trading leverage for breathers to trade when you have the same atmosphere as 75% of the other races in the game...

I tend to play oxygen rock when I play as the Juprups. Otherwise I try to mix it up.

Yeah but, if everybody knows that rock/oxy is common ... and doesn't take it ... then it becomes a good thing to take again ...see?

I rarely play the same race twice in a row, so it usually changes from game to game.

Most of the time, I pick oxygen-rock, too. I think it's just because I like those familar blue-white earth-like planets, they give me the comfortable feeling that I could live on them and breathe the air. One in a while, I pick something else at random just for variety. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I usually take Rock/Methane... because purple is so much nicer than green or orange, and rock/oxy is too common (again, lost trading potential)

I believe that size matters, so Gas/CO2 or H2.

Happy B-day, rdouglas, I just hit my "yearling" mark too.:)
I started doing Gas/CO2 because none of the AI had it (or so it seemed) and it just kinda stuck cuz green is my favorite colour..
"No... Blue... AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaahhhh....!!"
... but seriously folks.
I also tend to find that choosing gas giants gives you more Huge and Large planets. <Editor's Note: This observation has not been confirmed by Dr. Alneyan.> As an interesting side note to that concept, I'm involved in a PBW game right now where I totally "lucked-out" and found tons of huge breathers right next door. I'm now finding that it's a bad thing to colonize too many large planets at once early in the game.
Any thoughts on that?

Yeah, in the stock game ISTR that Gas Giants don't get any smaller than medium. However, Fyron's Quadrant Mod gives all sizes of Gas "Giants" - even tiny.
I used to go with gas giant planet types - fewer planets to defend. But now I always opt for a planet type that'll allow me to colonize moons right away (again FQM has additional moons - some gas).
Check a few threads reguarding training fleets at planets with moons. With a training fac on a planet and additional training fac's on two moons, you can fully train fleets/ships in 3 turns. Training your ships is essential and should not be overlooked in the least.
If you're a gas race, you can't utilize moons (in the stock game) until you acquire other colony techs.

Dammit... I guess I'm going to have to cave and install some mods to play with.

I often take gas/methane because I have a very childish sense of humor.
