View Full Version : SE4 File Downloads Tracker

Due to the potential costs of hosting really large mod/shipset/image/etc. files, I have taken it upon myself to set up a Bit Torrent tracker for Space Empires Users. Bit Torrent is an advanced file transfer protocol that relies on Users uploading the file to others as they download it themselves. There are already a number of files available on the tracker, such as a Shipset Megapack with 257 shipsets in it and a compiled Version of all 5 packs of the Image Mod, both ready for immediate use in Space Empires IV Gold. Unfortunately, I do not have a very fast internet connection at my disposal. It would be great if some people would volunteer to download the various files and help host them.

BT is a great option for dialup users for downloading large files because files are downloaded in many small parts at a time. Resumable downloads are built into the very nature of BT. Thus, there is no possibility of losing a download if your connection cuts out.

================================================== =========

How do I download a file from the tracker?

You must install a Bit Torrent client, such as Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/). Note that you might need to forward a port in your firewall to allow a Bit Torrent client to make connections. Read here (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/PortForwarding) for more information on port forwarding. Once it is installed and configured, you can start the download of a file by downloading the .torrent file hosted on the tracker and opening it in your Bit Torrent client. Please leave the file running after the download completes, so that it may be distributed to other Users as quickly as possible.

Can I upload files to the tracker?

Yes. An easy way to do this is to use Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/) as your Bit Torrent client. It has a function in the File menu to create a .torrent file. Make sure to select the option to use an External Tracker, and place this in the Announce URL field:

http://kazharii.no-ip.com:6969/announce

Once your .torrent file is created, email it to me (NOT the actual files you wish to share, just the .torrent file!). My email address is available in my profile.

================================================== =========

Please leave the files you download running after the downloads complete, so that other Users will be able to download the files as quickly as possible. It is a good idea to leave torrents running until you get at least a Share Ratio (upload / download) of 1.0.

Tracker URL:

http://kazharii.no-ip.com:6969/

================================================== =========

On another note, there is an incredibly efficient new BT client (sadly win32 only) around, utorrent. It is only a 105 kb download and typically uses less than 6 MB of ram. It is a great option for dialup users that might not want to download a hugely sized client such as Azureus, or those that don't want to use 80+ MB of ram just to download a SE4 patch.

There was a misconfiguration error that I think has been resolved, so it should be working now...

Coolness! I just finally got around to installing a Bit Torrent client this Last week because I wanted to watch The Power of Nightmares documentaries from the BBC. Now I can get SE files this way too.

Psst... The Power of Nightmares is an excellent series of three documetaries by the BBC about the parallel and nearly simultaneous rise of the 'Islamists' in the Muslim world and the 'Neo-cons' in the US. Subtitle is 'The Rise of the Politics of Fear'. Not broadcast in the US, but available at trackers like: http://conspiracy.hopto.org:6969/index.html
Also see the BBC's page at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/3755686.stm

Hmm... think it would be better to change the Image Mod torrent so that instead of providing an archive file, it is just the raw bitmaps themselves? This would allow you to point the torrent at your SE4 folder, and it would automatically not download the images you have already... or that might be a bad idea... Hmm... wonder what it would do with the Minis files and Readmes...

Perhaps only the portraits, with the minis and credits zipped separately.

That way none of the files in the torrent will look corrupt because they are old Versions of the same thing.

Mirrors started on my machine. So far, I have FQM finished, started on FQM + Image Mod, and will pick another one (probably whichever has fewest seeds and no-one else downloading) once that is finished. My connection is pretty good, so whichever ones I get should be a lot easier for people to download quickly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hey, Fyron?

Might want to put a password protect on the upload feature.

Because... well, anyone can put anything there right now. Like a certain 775MB video that's on there.

If I did that, all Users would also have to run a client that supports password-protected trackers...

Hmmm... well, might want to disable uploading then, and just have people email the .torrents to you. Or move the tracking page with upload to a different port, and create an entrance page that is password protected. Have a seperate one with no pass/no upload.

Does using this program cause any further security risks to my computer?

Fyron
November 30th, 2004, 01:53 AM
None that I can imagine...

Baron Munchausen
November 30th, 2004, 05:39 PM
Yes, any program that accesses the network has the potential to be a security risk. It depends on the individual program you are using. Some P2P programs are not well coded and a 'hacker' can sometimes exploit them to install spyware (not to mention the program itself might contain the spyware!) or get a virus into your machine. I have't heard of any problems with bittorrent yet. It's not as complex as many other P2P programs and so probably less prone to security bugs.

Will
November 30th, 2004, 06:58 PM
Fyron, I imagine most of the lack of interest is because a lot of people already have these files. When there's an influx of new players (say, around summer '05), then it will probably be much more active. But then, it will probably be for things other than SEIV http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

The SE4 Mod Files Bit Torrent tracker has been updated. The latest Version of the component pack of the Image Mod is included in the new Image Mod torrents.

The Image Mod torrent now comes in two flavors. One is the old archive of all packs. The other is the set of bitmap files themselves. Using this torrent, you can point it directly at your Space Empires IV folder, and it will automatically download and install only those images you need from the Image Mod, all while immediately being able to share the image files you already have. This should make updating to the latest Version of the Image Mod a snap.

I have finally updated the Image Mod Archive torrent to contain the latest versions...

I can't seem to get the non-archive version (direct download of the bitmap files, no archiving) to be named anything other than "Pictures" while having it go directly to a "Pictures" folder... I do not want it to download to an "Image Mod 6.17.2005" folder, as that defeats the purpose. Any ideas on how I could get it to be named "Image Mod 6.17.2005" on the tracker, but still go to a "Pictures" folder?

I have no idea what I'm doing. I downloaded and installed Azureus and Java. I ran Azureus. It ran the startup wizard. I get a NAT error. I do not have the Windows XP firewall running. I have the EZ Firewall Lite firewall running. I do not see the port that is trying to be used being blocked. I don't even see it come up at all in the Firewall's alert log. I went to "add and remove windows components" and added the UPnP thingy. We have a small home network. We have DSL through Valor. We have a 4-port router. I was hoping to help you out by allowing folks to download SEIV files off of my computer since my computer is almost always on. Do you have any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

The tracker is at present on the back burner. I have been looking for a good alternative tracker setup to Azureus, but have not found anything I liked yet.

Make sure that your firewall is allowing connections to "javaw.exe," as it is the bulk of the program. "azureus.exe" just starts up "javaw.exe."

Thanks. I just think I have no idea what I'm doing. I will ask my husband about setting Azureus up. He probably knows what all this stuff means. So should I go ahead and set it up, or shall I wait till you find something better?
If I understand what this program is, I think my husband uses something called Emule. Please understand, I really have no idea what I'm talking about, but maybe this program is what you are looking for. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

The concept of a BT tracker does not work if you disconnect shortly after finishing the download... It is a good idea to at least get a share ratio (upload / download) of 1.0 before disconnecting.
