I propose an cooperative artistic endevor whereas those who wish to contribute can.

Lets make a new ship set where each person who joins the team creates one ship or other for the set. The goal would be to have enough poeple sign up for this to create a one of a kind ship set with multiple creators invovled.

A Co-op ship set.

Are any of you up for the challenge? Each person would be entrusted to come up with a ship for the set.

Escort
Frigate
Destroyer
Light Cruiser
Cruiser
Battle Cruiser
Battleship
Dreadnought
Baseship

Carrier Light
Carrier
Carriear Heavy

Colony Ship

Transport Small
Transport Medium
Transport Large

Fighter Small
Fighter Medium
Fighter Large

The rest can be done as we go.

Satellite
Mine
Drone

Weapon Platform Small
Weapon Platform Medium
Weapon Platform Large

Troop Small
Troop Medium
Troop Large

Space Station
Battle Station
Starbase

And other as we see fit.

Those who are willing would submit a ship for the set, and then we would all vote on which ship would be used for what.

Its not that hard to make an image. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Race portrait, race emblem, big explosion, shield effect, and the race main bmp image are all things that can be done without any CG talent.

Hell look at me, I use lego's to make the ship sets I use. Well a lego like 3d graphics program that is. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I need to test my Blender skills on things other then sword blades, manatees, and spiral shells. Give me a theme(mechanical, organic, chrystaline, traditional warship, bird of prey, Tenis raquet?) and I call Cruiser, I have a soft spot for them from my SE2 days.

Great idea!! I can contribute with 5 ships.
- Borg Cube
- Ipsha Battleglobe
- Ipsha Tetraship
- Ipsha Scout
- Toth's Fighter

The Toth's Fighter, and all the Ipsha vessels don't have texture yet. Maybe someone could help with that? I assume of course that this shipset is intended for use in SE IV.
If my contributions are accepted, I will send AT the screenies for the shipset (Isometric and Top views). Or I'll send the scrienies to someone who is willing to give them nice a nice texture.
Any takers?

OK, how many teeth do I have to pull to get comments on my Colony Ship? hmmm?

AT, change the title of this thread to something that lets people know what it's about. like "Building a RagTag fleet.." or "The SE Immigration Fleet processing plant.." or... You think of a better title. But please do change the title.

This thread is no longer just for 5hit5 and Giggles, it's the home of outcast ships, of salvaged vessels and the home of a new empire made up of multiple races. "The Federation of Free Radicals"

but seriously, What do you think of my Colony Ship?

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

P.S. Textures are a dime a dozen, so if anyone needs help with textures, feel free to contact me.

Well, I like the colony ship...

It reminds me a little of that movie where the are in space trying to preserve the Last forests of earth and the project runs out of money and they recall the ships. But one guy refuses and programs a robot to care for the forest and jetisons it... dont remember the name of the movie but the domes on the colony ship remind me of the forest domes in the movie..

That movie was "Silent Running". It was a rather sad story in which the main character desperately tries to save the dome containing the Last remaining forest. The colony ship looks good! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I'm sorry, but I have to bow out. A catastrophy hit my computer while I was upgrading my Windows 2000 to Windows XP; during the installation, something happened to my computer, that had effectively screwed up my computer; whenever I tried to continue the upgrade to Windows XP, or just boot up Windows 2000, a blue screen of death poped up, screaming Unmountable Boot Volume or something like that, and would not let me access my own computer. Booting in Safe mode did not help, nor did booting in any other advanced startup modes.

In the end, I was forced to format my hard disk and install XP from scratch. Seeing as how I had upgraded 2000 to XP without any errors in the past, I had assumed that this time would be no different, and did not make any backups of anything.

Everything I had is gone: My MP3 collection is gone, all my textures are gone, all my models are gone, everything I had created and stored and did not upload to the web is gone.

Before you get too far... I suggest reformatting again, and creating 2 partitions. Make one of them 6 GB, call it C. Make the other the rest of the drive, call it D or something. Install ONLY Windoze on the C drive. Install everything else on D, and save all files on D. When Windoze fails in the future, all you have to do is reformat the C partition and reinstall Windoze. All data will still be there on the D partition.

Oh, and throw XP away. Go back to 2000. It is definitely better than XP...

I feel for ya, TerranC... I was back home Last week and was absolutely ecstatic to find that I still had loads of artwork from SE4, as well as about 500 pages worth of stories and such that I had written over the years. I burned all of onto a CD, brought it home, and found that nothing had actually been burnt onto the CD -it was still blank. I hadn't bothered to check because I was in a big hurry to get about 13 CDs of stuff burned before I had to go to the airport (and if you're wondering, NONE of them worked). To make matters worse, I'd agreed to delete the stuff off my parent's computer since it was taking up so much space.

Anyway, as for the main topic of this post, I'd be interested it popping in a model if I can find the time. Right now I'm just trying to provide Aaron with a reasonably constant stream of new component pics, and frankly doing a rather lousey job of it at the moment (sorry!).

But if I get stuck for ideas on components, I might throw in a Battleship or something...

Thats my arrangement, altho I have 2 seperate drives. C: was purchased with stability and warranty as main choice factors. D: was purchased for size and speed. I really think that arrangment is why I have no problems running older games that other people complain wont run on their WinXP. C: being NTFS is great for the Win OS and windows applications like Word or Excell, and any really new super-package applications. D: being FAT (well FAT32 actually) seems to be great for all my never-die favorite games, old disc management software that I dont want to give up and learn something new, etc etc.

I'm almost done with a model of the lexx for starfury, but I have no idea how to get it textured properly..... There's 4 parts to it, the Eyes, the Tail, the Body and the Controll Fins. When I work it out you can have it. Then I will try to convert some of my lego models.

Actually it was because I didn't have a clue what you intended them to be http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif So i filed them under Misc. So others could decide or you could tell me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Okay, a little explanation from me.
I intended the first model (1st row, model 4) as a scout. I modeled it from a pic of a Ipsha Scout (Babylon 5). The second model (2nd row, model 1) is an Ipsha Tetraship (a frigate) and the third model (2nd row, model 2) is an Ipsha Battleglobe. I recon that one is a cruiser or battlecruiser.

Of course you aren't forced to use them like that, but it's just the original roles they supposed to be for.

Hi I am really really new. I don't even have the game yet. I did get DOGA to start designing ships. I have questions on size of the ships and texturing. First texturing. What is it and how do you do it? Next is there a size for the ships to be used?

I created a type of Death Star. I named it Koala. I am not sure how to attach it. Do I have to have it on a web site? Note: It is not textured since I have no clue.

I will try to attach a file.

The file worked. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. I hope to have the game soon.

If you have DOGA, texturing is pretty easy. As you use the program you will learn. (Namely is just pick a color - find a texture to use - and apply to that part.

There is a tutorial about ship set design on the Gold CD and a link to it in the New Members Read sticky thread.

The size of all protrait images must be 128 x 128 Size of mini images must be 36 X 36.

In most cases I render my images at 1000 x 1000 and then resize to 128 or 36. I then open them in Paint and check for masking issues. Masking issues are the black area around your model. If it is not all black, your model when it passes through a nebula will look really bad.

Again read the ship set tutorial. DOWNLOAD LINK (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/ubbuploads/Atrocities/SSTutorial.zip) It should help a little.

Well your off to a good start. The one thing about DOGA though is that you can easly get carried away with using the pre-fabbed parts. As you learn the program you will more than likely want to start making your own parts. When you do, save them as part - name, then export them as a part. Whenever you need them to be a differant color, you open the part up and recolor/texture it, and then save it and export it again. (Preferably under a new name)

When I design, I always try to make the Battleship first. Then work my up and down the list.

Making ship sets is a lot of fun. DOGA is a great tool to use and many people have created some very impressive work with it.

The thing is, if your models don't come from one of the "Known" programs like 3ds, they are considered second rate childs endevours and looked down upon by the industry people. Its like they are insulted that a $40.00 program can out do their $6,000 one.

It doesn't take a doctrate to learn how to use DOGA, but it sure as hell seems like you need one to learn how to use 3ds or other.
