View Full Version : Arrrrggghhh!!!!!!!!!!! Broke my SEIV Disc

I'm sooo angry right now...
I'm in the process of moving right now.. (just graduated and got my Biology degree... yippee!) And my disc didn't survive the box. Something shifted and snapped the jewel case I'd put the game in for the move. Its terribly frustrating because now that I've graduated I was planning on getting into some fun PBW games. (In no way am I asking for an image/copy...)
I'm currently torn between ordering up another disc or waiting till SEV and save my budding relationship with my gf who's got definite potential to be 'the' one. I wonder if any of ya'll have had to make that decision in the past. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
The one time I didn't Alcohol120% a game and it gets destroyed.
Oh well... just thought I'd rant a little.
Again. I am in NO way asking for a copy of the game. I support MM and Shrapnel completely.
Sad sad sad,
James

Just the idea of breaking the disk made me check my disk (Which is the 1 CD I must always know the location of)

If you still have a copy of SE4 on a HD somewhere make a backup of that, you shouldn't have to reinstall the game off of a CD unless you really screwed up some of the stock data files.

I never use an original copy, the first thing I do when I get a game is make an image, the disc then gets stored in a CD wallet, which goes only open every 6 months or so (I dont really buy many games, because i'm a rather poor college student)

I don't know if Shrapnel will replace the CD for free minus S&H if you send them the fragments, you could try. I would probably expect it, if say, my Diablo disk suddenly stopped working, and I know a guy who lost his, but had the CD Key handy. YMMV.
I suppose, if it happened to me, I wouldn't rush right out and buy another copy of SE4, even addicted as I am. I'd keep checking the Shrapnel web page, and see if the price was coming down, or just get SE5.
I'd save the fragments of the CD, maybe there's going to be some sort of rebate like there was for SE4 Gold.

Very good to support MM, but I think you are the one and only person on this planet with an legal and good reason to download an copy of the game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif you bought it once, why buy it again...............

If your car were made of information rather than matter, I'd say yes.

This is why I recommend buying a back up copy of any game you like. You never know when it will not longer be available to buy. (BOTF for example)
Any ways, I would email shrapnel and see if you could work out something with them. Perhaps do as one of the other suggested.
As for love over game, no one loves being alone, even if they have this wonderful game to play. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Did you order it thru Shrapnel? (GamersFront.com?)
If so then you might try contacting customer support

If your car were made of information rather than matter, I'd say yes.
And if that information were in the public domain, I'd agree as well.

Hmmm...see I never made backups of data on CD's. Back in the floppy days, sure, it was almost a necessity to make backups. But I always figured the CD would be indestructable (Boy, are those ever famous Last words -- I should get started on backups right now)
But just about every program I've had, I ordered the upgrade to in about a year, so I'd have tons of burnt CD's around. Add to that the many programs I paid for that never came on disk. I downloaded them and recieved the key to activate.
Maybe we should get into the habit of realizing we paid for the CD key, and not the pLastic disk. 'Cept that doesn't really apply to SE4.

Hi I have two questions after reading this thread.
How do you make a back up of the Gold CD?
Do you need the CD in the drive to play?

Any CD burning software should be able to do it. Nero (http://www.nero.com/) and Alcohol 120 (http://www.alcohol-soft.com/) are some of the better ones out there. You can use a demo Version of Alcohol 120 to create a copy of your SE4 CD. Stay away from crap like "Roxio Easy CD Creator" and anything with a similar name. Such software is very shoddy and isn't any cheaper than better software packages.
Do you need the CD in the drive to play?
No. Having the CD in the drive will allow the SE4 music to play when you are playing the game, but if you have no CD in there, SE4 runs just fine. You can even put any audio CD in the drive and have SE4 play the music from it. It chooses songs based on the settings in Data\Settings.txt related to Combat Tracks and such. Note that track 1 can never be used, as it is the data track on a combined data/audio CD like the SE4 CD is.

Sorry to hear about your loss mate.
Tho thanks for the warning, could happen to anybody! I made a copy of my disc + an ISO on my HDD that I can load in Daemon tools anytime.
If I still manage to somehow lose SEIV now, I would deserve it.

The infomation you already bought. If you write to Shrapenel, asking if you could send the money for a blank CD, and pay for S&H, I'm 99% sure they'd say that they could send you a new one if you do that. If you can't, then get someone to lend you a backup. JUST KEEP THE FRAGMENTS!

I broke my original CD of Star Fleet Command once and they replaced it for free, I just shipped them the fragments.
They didn't ask how it broke, fortunatly....

It's good idea if you assume that hard drives never break. Unfortunately they do (experienced it myself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif) and then you may find yourself not being able to find original CD as well. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Shipping cost, CD printing, manual all cost money - it's not information only.

Maybe you ought to check what you were talking about before, and then make a post. Downloading has nothing to do with this, it's about losing a CD and getting another one from Shrapnel.

You have taken my quote out of context then accused me of talking about something else. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
My statement about cars not being comparable to software was in response to a discussion about the morality of downloading a copy of SEIV if the original disk broke.
