SpaceEmpires.net is now more or less back Online. Some data was lost, however. Read the following news story to learn more:

SpaceEmpires.net Recovery (http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=64&mode=&or der=0&thold=0)

That's funny. (Not funny like "ha-ha"...) When I go to the page it says "Welcome TurinTurambar" in the upper left, so I guess I joined before your restore point, but when I try to go to my profile or anything it says:

You are trying to access a restricted area.

We are Sorry, but this section of our site is for Registered Users Only.

You can register for free by clicking here, then you can
access this section without restrictions. Thanks.

Seems a bit odd.

You are not registered. You have an old cookie and/or pages in your browser Cache. Try clearing that first.

That sucks horribly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
Were forum Posts recovered succesfuly? There was a lot of useful info.

Yes, all forum Posts seem to have been restored. It is just the poster ids for any user that had registered after Nov 3, 2003 that were lost. The post text was all saved in the database backup.

Sounds like you need a better hosting site. One that does more back ups, and can restore them without incident. I am glad to see the site back up.

Sounds more like the software used had unforseen bugs... The hosting company restored the files to the new drive on the server a few days ago. The problem was buggy database backup software that for some reason did not back up all of the tables... It happened with my backups and theirs.

Ugh, ugh. Even my passwords and stuff had reverted back to old ones... at least the Posts weren't lost though. Will there ever be a way to fix the guest names?

Doubtful.

That's a shame Fyron, but at least you got it back up. As for the forums, Guest id's are 100% better than losing all those Posts.

You remember your password from 2003? Holy cow I can't remember what day of the week it is.

I use a complex cryptic algorythym with a double locking enigma with reverse characteration encryption for my passwords. This say they are so complex that only a four year old with an autistic special ability for breaking codes.

The safest thing is to use acronyms. Seems to easy to brute force if you use real words, just use a ten character password that combines numbers with letters that uses the first letters of some catchy phrase that you make up.

OT:
Password best advice is to use at least 3 out of the 4 categories of characters. The four categories are lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. The minimum length should be 8. I've set XP to reject passwords not complex enough. I really ought to set a password expire system up (XP has this), but I don't feel like changing it every couple of months.

Use something like the name of a book you really like. You'll always remember it. For example, my password used to be a 13 letter name of a book that isn't really a word in the english language, but actually a combination of two words. Just try brute force computing to crack that sucker!

Not that I mean to go on about it, but when can we expect to be able to post to the forums again?. For SE: Galaxies I do not have permission to add to my empires story.

It has been confirmed. No possibility of recovering data from the failed hard drive. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I have opened the forums again.

That sucks. It's also been discouraging me from visiting recently too - I guess that makes me shallow. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
