Has anyone been able to get this to function in WinXP or is there a better/newer option? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Wordpad? You need to find a better text editor. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Plenty of free ones out there.

You might try MetaPad. It's free and very robust.

I use Editplus (http://www.editplus.com), but it is not free (25 dollars or something) and I haven't really mucked around with others (such as Metapad)... I don't really have a recommendation.

I use PSPad (http://www.pspad.com) with a syntax hilighting for SE IV (http://aiken.fromru.com/syntax.zip). Good editor and free.

I use the component editor with XP with no trouble. Then, I switch to Notepad for the really hardcore editing.
I swear I'll finish some day.

MetaPad. Most definitely MetaPad. It can handle big files and is very handy to use. Its interface is a mix between Notepad and Wordpad, and it's simply much better than both. I never use Word anymore since I installed OpenOffice (which sometimes makes my pc hang up and which I never use to edit .txt files). I don't even think if Word can open .txt files?

It definitely can. I can't imagine any possible reason why it would be unable to. Microsoft has very good office suite software... it is primarily just the OSes that they fall short on. Too bad they won't abandon the OS and focus on where their strengths are. Oh well.

They'd just ruin that too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Seriously, MS has a big habit of making good software then proceeding to cripple it in the name of "upgrades". Hardware, too.
