View Full Version : Favorite Mod that has decent fighters?

I've been away for a few months, I just re-installed the game and loaded 1.91. If I remember correctly, the "factory" mod has pretty worthless fighters.
What mods have the best fighters? And has the AI to use them? I Last played the DN3 mod. I liked the fighter options there, but I also remember a couple of AI's building things like small satelites with a computer brain and nothing else, or fighters that have no weapon.
Thanks!

GritEcon has decent fighters:
Ship vs Fighter weapons have limited effectiveness in both directions.
In order to attack ships, you need to design bombers, which are naturally slower and poorly armored. They shoot actual seekers too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
In order to get your bombers to the targets, you need to clear the enemy's defensive fighters with your own attack fighters.
As an added bonus, you can research components for your fighters that allow them to shoot down enemy missiles, and thus act as mobile point defense (which is lacking on ships)
Ship/Base point defense is handled by missiles, so it is basically impossible to get an efficient spread of defense fire. A healthy mix of overkill and untargetted units means that ships alone will have a tough time whittling down a fighter squadron, but not be totally ineffective either.
The fighter-Users also have to consider group size much more important. The ability to concentrate fire is proportional to the number of fighters per stack. The losses you take from ships is inversely proportional though.
Also, since ship PD is so weak, missiles are less powerful than regular weapons. They still fire from extreme range, and in this mod never fizzle out, but they suck down hundreds of supplies and do less damage/kt/turn compared to all other weapons of similar tech level.

Thanks a bunch guys!
Is Proportions included (partially anyway) in the DN3 mod?
I like the CV's I can build in that mod. Really huge when the Fighter Bays and Cargo holds can be miniturized.
I will have a look at these!

Right now the STM has some mean fighters. Well they are shuttles actually.
The stark cold truth about SE IV is that it is not fighter / carrier group friendly. I published a mod that made the fighters more useful, a beta really, but it was not even downloaded once so I figured no one wanted it. Sa la vie (sp)

In mod I'm working on fighters aren't really of value until later in the game. I'm trying to make them a viable weapon against the larger ships. Unfortunately it's still in early beta.

I don't think I've heard of it yet...
Perhaps it needs better advertising, and a link http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Well, I tried to set up Adamant, but the stuff about FQM and Image pack was not clear. And what the heck is this torrent stuff?

Image Mod can be found here: http://imagemod.spaceempires.net/
You need all 5 packs.
What was unclear, specifically?

I found a file called Adamant FQM.exe, which I ran. I created a bunch of directories. All I need are the system images?
Seems like there is a bunch of extra stuff in there.

The part about needing all 5 packs. It seemed like there should have been just one. I will try again!
Thanks!

DN3 had no AI support so silly things like that happened. DN4 however has TDM AI tweaked to work with the mod (thanks again to Aiken for that work). I haven't seen the AI produce any weaponless units anymore.
Oh, and DN4 adds a couple new mounts for fighter too from DN3.

Adamant FQM has the system images from FQM included already. It has everything that the Adamant Full file has, plus the required system iamges. All you need to add to it is the Image Mod.
Note that you need to download Adamant 0.15.00 Full (or FQM) and apply Adamant 0.15.03 Data file to it as a patch to get it to the latest Version...
FQM is a separate mod: http://fqm.spaceempires.net/

The image mod packs are separated for a reason. No sense in downloading the facilities again if all that was updated were component images. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
That bit torrent thing is an alternative file transfer protocol. You can get all 5 packs compiled into one file from it, should you choose to use it instead. Otherwise, you must download all 5 packs separately.
Make sure to install the image mod into the stock Pictures folders, rather than in any specific mod. This way, all the mods that use it have instant access to the files.

It is a good point. Why download all the packs if only one has been updated?
