Guys,
I finally convinced the powers that be to switch to a unix host for most of our hosting services. Mysql and php ran like a dog under windows, and I am seeing pretty good performance myself personally compared to the old forum.
I would like to take a quick poll of everyone else's experience.
Also please note that I have some other plans now that we are on the unix host to further speed things up.
Thanks.

Unix rocks richard. If it is good enough for me to use in GM to run quality systems then it has to be good for a forum... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Well since my professional background is as a Unix Systems Admin I would have to agree http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.
But I'm biased....

Much better than before - it's taking considerably less time for My Daily View of the Forums (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/dosearch.php?Cat=&Forum=All_Forums&Words=&Match=En tire+Phrase&Old=1day&Limit=1000) to load; about 1/3 the previous time.

I was wondering why it was faster,.. I has a new 'improved' engine.
Keep up the fantastic work Richard.

Im pretty biased myself. Ive always felt that a server is best run when stripped down of pretty administration menus. There are times I do recommend Windows servers but only in office environments where many people might need to walk up and make changes. Then its a fair trade

I guess being on dialup limits the benefits I can see from the change. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Huh, I thought the forum slowdown was my DSL provider cutting my bandwidth because I download too much pr0n http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
(Hey, the forum IS faster at school... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)

I haven't really noticed...
But then, most of the time the main parts of the forum never have a chance to leave my cache...

The forum seems to have stopped updating which threads I've read.

It seems to accidently update all my pointers every so often. Some days I'll visit here and everything is in the pale (read) color, but I know there are many new posts in many threads. So then I have to manually check the dates and try to figure out what I haven't read.
