View Full Version : Shipset/Race Errors

Does anyone else get 17 to 25 of these everytime they open a game turn using shipsets downloaded from PBW?
Is it because I'm downloading and copying into the wrong directories? or are there quite a few AI files out there with errors in them...
Some shipsets are fine, others are like this. The Breen and Sonne are the two biggest offenders.
Thanks,

Are you getting errors just opening and playing your own turn for a PBW game? They may be older style shipsets that don't have all the neccesary lines in the AI_Settings files. If you are playing turns, like for a solo game, or processing a PBW turn offline then the shipsets may be missing strategies.

If the problem is old (pre-Gold) shipsets, the instructions for fixing them are linked in my sig.

Capn, if a gold compatible shipset is used with pre-gold SE4, does it generate errors because of the presence of those lines? If not maybe we could go through and patch all the shipsets in the PBW file library. I'll bet someone could write a program that would go thorough and do it automatically. All it would need to do is unzip, edit the AI text files and zip it back up again.

You can get the shipset archive from my SE4 files tracker, which has over 240 shipset, all patched to be gold-compatible. It has most of the shipsets out there.

There was an effort to identify these ship sets that had out dated Ai and fix them, but I do not know how it turned out. I guess it never turned out.

Isnt that if you download BitTorrent to get it
and download a RAR unpacker to install it?

You have to be logged into PBW before you can download files from it. You can view the same file on ModWorks *here* (http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=302).

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif You post this stuff again? Windows doesn't have advanced technologies included in it, so of course you have to download programs...

Presuming you don't already have those...
They're almost basic net tools these days.
You can go and get them the slow HTTP/ZIP way, but why would you unless you're forced to?
BT and RAR are the fast lanes on the information superhighway http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

In both posts I thought it was worth mentioning. Sorry if I ruined your waiting for the question so you could make your comment

It seemed as if you were dredging up that strange distaste for having to install new programs to make use of a file...

I dont have a distaste for it. I already have most things loaded which anyone can come up with a need for.I have a distaste for requiring it. Especially if it comes with an attitude.
I will happily continue to provide hosting and simple http link for any files (zip or rar) anyone cares to offer.

There is no "attitude" involved in offering such files.

As Gandalf said. Http and zip are common standards on the net. They might not be the best and you, Imperator Fyron, have every right to try to alter them. But I have every right to find this inconvinient. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Not in offering the files, of course not. Files should be offered and in as many methods/formats as possible.
But it is best to mention that BitTorrent and WinRAR (or something equal) are also required and available at xxxxx links along with the offer. Rather than wait for the person who is seeking the mods to have to ask to allow for some "duh, of course" response about windows.

Makes sense to me. If I already had those then it would be a very fast and efficient way to get them for everyone involved. Of course if I need to go get them first then Im not sure there is an advantage other than to say "well you might as well since you will need them for other things" but I havent really seen the option come up often enough to feel unfanatical in making that recommendation to someone that doesnt have them yet. It is moving up but at present I would say at BEST the two methods might be considered equal in number so offering both ways still seems to make sense rather than push it.

The information is provided on the site. Or rather, a link from the site to the thread here on Shrapnel with instructions on how to get started is provided.
Bandwidth savings since switching all Image Mod packs and my large mods hosted on SE.net from zip to rar have been quite noticeable, and there has been no significant decrease in the number of downloads, rather an increase unrelated to the formats. I created the bit torrent tracker specifically to shave off more from my bandwidth usage... It incidentally allows the hosting of large files that would suck up tons of bandwidth were they hosted directly.

Downloading winRAR plus the RAR version of any imagemodpack (except the combat pack of course) is less than downloading the ZIP version.
All 3 P&N starfury campaigns RARed are 10% smaller than just one campaign ZIPped.
The numbers are there. Anyone with a slow connection will save gobs of time. With a fast connection, its not so important, but RAR even does zip files better than winZIP and with less bloat to boot.

Next time you go to install winZip, just get winRAR instead. You'll never miss it.

Well I dont have a bandwidth concern as far as hosting files.
Just curious.. does your logs show how many people have clicked on those links and downloaded the .torrent file (which Im guessing does them no good)

On that tangent, should I be lowering my estimation of the average web visitor around here, or the net in general?
Most of the people I know would either google for the required app, or ask about it. (Assuming they don't have it already)

Every once in awhile a thread comes up where you can smell the arrogance and testosterone as soon as the page loads.
This would be one of those.

Capn, if a gold compatible shipset is used with pre-gold SE4, does it generate errors because of the presence of those lines?
A Gold shipset will generate errors whenever Drones are mentioned in the design files. I haven't tested yet whether a converted pre-Gold AI causes errors in Classic.
Since the link in my sig doesn't always work, I've attached the instructions here.
[Edit] OK, after a little testing, it looks like an old AI converted to Gold using these instructions still works in v1.49.
