View Full Version : OT: Installing a second OS
narf poit chez BOOM

I've either moved everything from the D drive to the C drive or deleted it; I've checked to make sure the computer still boots. Is there anything I need to know before I format and install Win98 on D?
(Like, how do I switch OS's; will the second OS interfere with the old OS; anything that I should know, no matter how silly or obvious?)

If you install 98 before XP, XP will detect it and give you a list of OSes to boot at startup time. It doesn't work so well going the other way around, really. 98 doesn't have any support for multiple OSes on the computer. You might have to do an emergency reinstall of XP from the CD to get it to have two OSes recognized. Unless someone has an easier way...

i've 98 & 2000 installed what i did was:
1- Install win98 (with all the driver etc, etc, etc)
2- Install Win2000 (using a clean installation, if you do an update you won't have 2 op. systems)
When 2000 finish installing it automatically setup the option to select wich op. sys. do you want to run ( a menu will apear when your computer boots), i think XP SHOULD work the same way, i don't know what op. sys. you are using now but if it's XP or 2000, check if you have NTFS because if you're using NTFS you won't be able to boot on DOS. You must be using FAT or FAT32.

Just remember you need to install the older OS -first-. The newer one will detect the old one and start the process of setting up dual-boot for you.
If dual-booting Windows and Linux, always install Windows first. The friendlier distros, such as Red Hat, Mandrake, and SuSE will detect windows, and offer to set up dual booting.
Win 9x/Me can't read NTFS, so they need a FAT32 partition ready for them to use. Linux can read and write to FAT32 quite well, but should be installed to its own partition with its own filesystem anyway.
After that, both operating systems should operate normally.

I've got XP for the current OS, Win98 will be the new OS and both drives are FAT32.

What do I install it in? Dos?
Sivran
March 4th, 2005, 01:05 AM
That won't work very well Narf. The older OS must go on first. If you attempt to install 98 with XP already there you will most likely not be able to boot XP again. Then again, going from XP to 98 will be an upgrade anyway...

i'd suggest you boot over DOS, erase the windows directory (or format if you have backups), then copy the win98 install files to a temp directory and install it, then when it's fully installed & configured make a install WinXP or 2000 (i like 2000) clean install. that worked for me.

This was what i did in my notebook (1ghz, 256mb ram, 30gb HD):
1. Created a DOS 6.22 boot cd with Dos, Partition Programs and win98 install, created a 2gb partition for win98 and 26GB partition for "shared files", both with Fat filesystem.
2. Installed win98 in the 2gb partition, and installed all the necessary drivers for win98 (be sure to get them in the net for your hardware).
3. Used win98 do convert the Fat filesystem to Fat32 filesystem.
4. With a bootable WinXP i created a third partition with 2GB and a NTFS filesystem, and installed WinXP in the new partition (WINXP detected WIN98 and created the dual-boot).
5. Installed all the winxp drivers.
6. Done! I have now a dual booting system with win98 and winxp, with three disk partitions, a 2gb with FAT32 and win98, a 2gb with NTFS and winxp and a 26gb with FAT32 for files and programs that both OS use.

Isn't it generally recommended to have 4 or 5 GBs or so for the XP partition? It is fairly bloated, afterall.

OS is irrelevant for hard drive jumper settings. That is all controlled at the motherboard's BIOS level. You most likely need to set the jumpers on the hard drives appropriately. I usually just try to have everything on cable select and plug the drives in to the correct slot on the data cables.

Me. Because its cool.
Honestly, I'm looking to learn some Linux and do some dev work on it, but I still need to do dev work in Windows, and Linux has some servers I might be using in the future.
Thus, I created a four partition system with RHEL 4 and Win2k pro.
Its a sweet setup.

Depends.
I have a SATA drive and IDE drive, so no jumper settings needed.
WinXP handles the situation with ease.

Depends. A tiny XP install can fit inside of a GB (WinXP embedded can go all the way down to 5MB, but it can't do anything). My RHEL4 install is actually larger than any install of XP I've ever done...

I wouldn't mess with Windows Backup. I have tried to use it with only limited success. Your better off using something like Ghost & make an image of the whole drive.
By the way, you can make a manual dual boot with 2 harddrive while controlling your HD jumpers with a DPDT switch. But when you can do it with the software, why do it.

Hi,
Speaking from experience, this process is quite... painful.
The others were correct in saying the simplest way is to repartition and format your drive. Windows 98 attempts to install onto partition 1. IIRC, if it detects another file-system it gives you only two choices: to format the partition (losing all existing data), or to cancel and stop the install.
This leaves you with a number of methods:
#1 - Redo everything, install 98 on partition 1, and XP wherever else (2).
This method is the easiest and the safest. Simply back up all important data. Re-manage your partition layout so you have an unallocated space for 98. Install 98, which will now be C:. Put in the XP disk, reboot, and format and reinstall Windows to your XP partition (2). XP will now be D:. The boot-loader prompt will be set up by default for both OSes.
#2 - Use VMware
Only applicable if you have access to it (e.g.: work). Makes multi-booting incredibly simple.
(Note: Anything past this point is pure speculatory. I haven't tried it.)
#3 - Convert XP partition to FAT. Install 98 on same partition as XP
Title pretty much says it all. Make sure to install to a different directory than \WINDOWS. After, follow the steps outlined in #4 to be able to boot XP. However, I wouldn't recommend this due to the undisputed superiority of NTFS.
#4 - Move XP partition forward, install 98 on the now-free space
This is risky. Basically, what you want to do is move the XP partition forwards to leave unallocated space behind for 98 to install to. This can be achieved with tools such as Partition Magic. Afterwards, format this space to FAT. Then follow these steps (note that this is before you install 98):
Copy ntldr and NTDETECT.COM to the root directory of the 98 partition.
Copy boot.ini to boot.ini.xp on 98
Install 98
Boot into 98. Replace 98's boot.ini with boot.ini.xp. Increment the partition number[s] inside by 1 (e.g.: if XP was partition(1) change it to partition(2)). Then, insert C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 [SE]" at the bottom of the file.
This part is essential. Since you're setting up the dual-boot manually, the bootsect.dos file is not created. Read more on creating it here (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm).
The boot sector now needs to be replaced for XP. Put in your XP disk and reboot into repair mode. Run 'diskpart' to find the drive letter for the 98 partition ('map' might show it too, I forgot). Then run 'fixboot C:', where C: is the letter for the 98 partition.
If I didn't omit anything, that should do it. Quite complicated, if you ask me.
---------
As you may note, simply backing up the entire XP partition, installing 98, and restoring XP to a new partition won't work. The 98 partition would take precedence and the drive letters would change, leaving XP unable to boot. (There are some automatic drive mapping programs out there but in my experience they suck)
Good luck http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif

How big is the program? Can you boot into DOS with a boot disk and then run it. IIRC this program works by extending memory. So If Windows has already loaded, it may not release the needed memory addresses when switching back to DOS_ala_98, which is not exactly a pure DOS environment.

*GRRRR*
Even with a MS-Dos boot-disk (Created with the XP format command), it still comes up with the same error.
Is it possible I simply have to much memory?

mmm.... what's Daggerfall a game? all those thing like
"EAX=83533000 EBX=FFFFFB86 ECX=00000000 EDX=83532CDD ESI=83532B8C
EDI=83444BB4 EBP=83532D88 ESP=83532B80 EIP=83425B92 EFL=00010282
CS=018F-7CBE3000 DS=019F-7CBE3000 ES=019F-7CBE3000
FS=0000-xxxxxxxx GS=01A7-xxxxxxxx SS=019F-7CBE3000"
is assembler, i know a bit, but not enough to guess what all that stuff is...., it maybe (but i'm guessing), a problem with drivers, maybe video/sound card, you could try booting with a win98 boot disk and create manually another boot disk without any of win98 bootdisk stuff, just a "format a: /s" (where a: is you floppy drive) ofcourse you won't be able to use cdroms you'll have configure that yourself or copy the entire cd to the HDD http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I can tell you what those are... those are the registers on the processor. It looks like the program dumps out the registers when it crashes... but mostly useless to me. Those hex numbers are what was in the processor's registers.

yes, but i guess only tech support will understand what they mean..... with some luck....

Good luck on getting meaningful support for Daggerfall... its many years old. And even then, those numbers are just about useless. Even a developer, without knowledge of what exactly caused the problem, couldn't figure it out.

www.elderscrolls.com (http://www.elderscrolls.com) Best RPG's ever!
Well, so much for that. Thanks, people. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
It might be too much memory; I'll try to get ahold of a small stick and see what happens.
If that doesn't work, maybe fdisk D and partition it and install 95...

Heck ya nark. I love Morrowind... I need to get my mitts on a copy of some of the earlier stuff. The next version of the Elder Scrolls looks kicking too.

Gee... I never even thought to install 2 OS's on my laptop...huh...
That would solve the "No, your stupid little DOS programs can't TOUCH my serial port!" problem that XP has.
Unfortunately, the XP was installed by the manufacturer and I'm NOT uninstalling it.

Are there any programs that 'hide' memory? Something like a slowdown program like MoSlo, only to make the program that gets run think you have less memory?
(The more I think about, the more I think that too much memory is the problem. The posts on the Daggerfall forums said that the Daggerfall install program freezes on running in XP; mine gets an error on a dos extender (and crashes), which is probably a memory program)
Not even sure how I'd find that on the internet.

Sivran helped me find a program that allocates and frees memory; didn't seem to help. Dunno.

It's not a matter of making it work; I was trying to turn off the nudity. That's how to do that.
