Atrocities, are you in danger?

From what I can tell its a low level eruption between 5k to 20k. Hard to tell from here. But interesting none the less. Its getting hard to see now through the trees. I will have to drive drown the road to see the full moutain.

No danger for us. We live about 50 miles to the south west of the mt in Vancouver / Richfield area.

Quit impressive to look at, is it not. I am probably closer to it than you are Atrocities. The mountain is due east of here.

EDIT: Got my directions messed up.

Yep, I'm in Washington, but all I ever hear about is Portland and Oregon. I just listen to the radio usually. They get the news out faster. Usually hear something on the radio a day or two before the TV news has anything to say about it.

'Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic' - either Asimov or Clarke, original quote.

Really? I got this one from Dean Kamen the guy who made the segway scooter. They called him the Wizard of IT back when they didn't know what IT was.

That's the first time I've heard the Dean Kamen qoute, but I've heard the other one about a dozen times, and either of them were writing in the 30's.

It was a quote in an article I read several years ago. The quote caught my eye, so I saved it. It seemed fitting with my work on the Adamant Pics.

Don't forget the corollary:
"Any technology that IS distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced."

I found the article.

Or the Florence Ambrose amendum: Any technology, no matter how primitive, is magic to those who don't understand it.

I seem to remember reading somewhere a line that sort of sounded like this:
Magic is simply something that the uninitiate does not understand.

Any ideas as to the source of that line?

The Plume reached 36k feet and the eruption lasted about 30 min. No show from here though I live in Bellingham. Maybe Mt. Baker will give me a "show" someday.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

It would really really suck if st helens blew full blast...smoke would get to me:-(. And also would kill at and anythere because the dust is like microscopic glass, well sharp and will cut you lungs and throat if enhailed. PAINFUL DEATH

Well the intial ploom was about 35k high but disipated rapidly. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif It was an Ash fart. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif It did however catch everyone off gaurd so that is the scary thing.

When I saw this post first I thought:

Oh Christ. Not again.

in response to the 1980? eruption where the entire peak of MSH was completely annihilated.

I suppose the mountain's calmed down by now.....?

Do you have to worry about the ash getting into your computer and gumming up the works?

I'm more curious as to how many ashtrays have been placed under holes in the roof.....
