I have been very busy working this week making new Ship sets for my upcoming mod and this is a ship from the Star Kngdom of Leon (pronounced Leo-an).
This is a ship I just sort of threw together and I haven't decided what size it should be yet, any sugjestions/comments/tips would be accepted http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

The ships are fine but you might want to keep a consistent angle for all the ship portraits. An oblique angle works best for ships that are somewhat longer than they are wide. You may also want to render at a high resolution and use a program like Adobe's photoshop to resize, it tends to due a better job.

Well I could have rendered at a higher qaulity but last time I did that it took LOTS of time to load on people and they suggested I make them lower quality while posting such a large pic.
As for the angle thing I'll work on that http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Any ideas on what size ship this should be?

My suggestion was more for the actual in-game ship portaits (based on what I saw of the your other finished set) than WIPs.

Odd those are BMPs and rendered from Doga, what about them is low quality? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

When you render with the DOGA engine at a small size like 128x128 - the image looks rough (jagged edges etc) as opposed to when you render it larger and re-size it using Photoshop (or similar program) which does a nice job of making the image look crisp.

I like it. Could use a good texture, but other than that...Maybe a couple more guns on the side?
What's that glowey thing in the middle?

Looks good. The size might a cruiser or perhaps a battle cruiser? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Or it is most likely that he left the anti-alias setting at 0...

I like the gun at the front right wing best..... perhaps you could mount a couple of those things on the side of the ship.

Yeah I think it would make a good frigate, those guns are afterall rather small and weaker then they look http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Well here it is with a new texture and additional guns.

Neat texture. If you put another one of those wing thingies on, maybe near the back, it could pass as a light cruiser

That's a ship that says 'You wanna try to kill me? It's been tried, buddy. It's been tried and they died.'

Glad to hear you guys like it, and BTW I have decided to classify that as a frigate for the mod I'm making.
The Star Kingdom of Leon will be of 'Russian' descent, and the reason I put Russian in '' is because of the fact that this is a parallel history we are talking about so there wasn't quite a Russia as we think of it. And tried to copy the intimidating look they have in a lot of their ships.
While keeping it seperate from the Icaran looking navy ships.
I am still having trouble figuring out what ships of Asiatic design heritage should look like though http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Needs more guns.

LOL narf it's only a cruiser and it has 12 heavy guns (for the Leon) and 2 flakker cannons and you want more guns http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Wow I liked my Icarans better so I'm suprised everyone likes the Leon better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif hehe well live and learn right?

Hmm...Actually...Now that I take a second look, I'll change that to 'move the forward wings more forward'. And maybe align them with the hull.
Starhawk
March 11th, 2005, 01:26 AM
Actually Narf http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif they're set back slightly for a reason, they are also at an angle for a reason, I tried perfectly aligning them with the hull but that only succeded in pointing the gun turrets into the hull of the ship which while amusing to see would not do very much for the ship in combat http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Why do some of the deck guns have blast shields? A turret wouldn't have armor like that unless they were being manned by someone. What I mean is why have that extra bit out there if its a space vessel. Put it on the turret itself.

It's unique it looks cool and some times even I like to add a bit of form to my function http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
But if you want a technical reason okay, you see that part at the back of the turret that's where the crew is and so they have an extra peice of armor between them and instant death should an energy weapon strike there, we are talking afteral about energy weapons that would likely chew through even heavy armor in short order so let's say Leons like to have that extra layer AWAY from the crew so that when it gets vaporized the guys in the turret it's self may have a chance to go "WHOAH" and run away thus saving their lives http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Well, that is an interesting explanation; I asked because things like that were designed with a purpose. In real life, plating like that has an obvious purpose, when someone has to physically operate the gun and maintain it.
I have to admit, it looks neat and gives it a heritage of sorts with ships from the recent past to the modern era.

Hehe well it's supposed to look similar to what I've seen in a lot of Russian ships, they don't QUITE look modern enough though they do have a lot of modern weaponry, mixed in a little bit with the old.
The Leon star Kingdom is actually descended from what we would call Russian stock.

That look very promising. Have you considered making your own turrets? You make one, then save it as a Part. That way you all of your turrets will be identical and you can add them as a part. You make several versions of it, one with the barrels up, one with the barrels level and so on.
Also blue does not look good. Do a google search for metal textures and see if any of those will work. Remember you can use outside textures and use the color pallet and other settings to change the appearance of the textures.

AT for some reason whenever I try saving parts and reloading them later it doesn't show up in the option menu maybe because I don't have a paid account?
Well so far sadly I have to juse use regular turrets and modify them the best I can http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
As for the blue I certainly will look up other texture sources thanks for the advice http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

You have to save them to a directory then when you ADD PART, you must select the ADD PART FROM option under PARTs.

What do you mean save it to a directory? I tried saving it in the Data section and it was THERE I just couldn't load it into another model.
