View Full Version : Map Editor and custom planet images

Have the planets image mod 11c installed.
How do I get images into the map editor?

I have also been working on some new planets, and so far it seems to be coming along nicely:

Now I wanna see my art in-game! So how do I get my custom planets into the map editor?

Even better, I'de like the game to use some of the hundreds of planetxxx files when generating a new random universe. Is this possible? Is this what it ordinarily does? HEELLP! 10Q http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

You have to edit the SectType.txt file and add an entry for every planet image you would like to be useable. FQM Deluxe has many of them used in it already, so it provides a solid base to work from.

You may want brighten up those planet images. Especially for the mini images which will become very hard to see at 36x36.

Hi, thanks! <bwrzzzz> nice ta be here!

Yes, definitely needs brightness; another good reason to look at it in-game.

FQM, Fyron's Quadrant Mod, where can I get this thing?

Nowhere right now, unfortunately. I have attached to this post the data files of the latest released version. I am currently working on a new version of the mod, but do not know when it will be ready. It will balance out the planet types and atmospheres, so make sure to keep any changes at the end of the file for ease of use later...

Note that the mod references system images normally included in FQM that you will not have. You don't necessarily need the SystemTypes.txt or QuadrantTypes.txt data files if all you want is more planet images.

Also, note that FQM adds several new types of planets in PlanetSize.txt, which are referenced in SectType.txt.

Well thanks bunches for a preview! I'm off ta try it out, and maybe break out the crayons and spray cans and magic markers n stuff.

So I've been working on a system to emulate the image of earth from the 1972 Apollo-17 mission, using procedural methods. It comes reasonably close, and still works pretty well in game:

SectType.txt entry:
Physical Type := Planet
Picture Num := 302
Description := Inhabited by a pre-warp civilization of ape-like creatures.
Planet Size := Medium
Planet Physical Type := Rock
Planet Atmosphere := Oxygen

Wow... that picture looks nice. Too bad the little tiny picture wont have that much detail. But that's good work.

It does look nice. But perhaps make the clouds fluffier and the ground a little differentiated?

That planet looks great. I'm with Narf on the clouds and the ground.

It could also use some more cowbell.

Do you got any other planet types? Like gas giants?

If you can make them as goodlooking as your rock planet, I for one would be interested in using them

Something in a gas giant:

That's a great looking gas giant. Will you be submitting your images to the Image Mod for all of use to enjoy? They definitely have a place in future FQM versions if you do. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

FQM is back online again, so you could grab a full copy if you would like.

What program are you using to generate the images, especially the great looking Gas Giant??

Yea that gas giant is fantastic!

I'm using POV-Ray to create the planets. I've got another coming, should be done by this afternoon. Where do I post submissions, so they can be included in the Planet Mod?

I hate subterranean worms...

Here's a nice hydrogen gas giant planet.

You like it?

AngleWyrm

I got multi-layered clouds by doing a color_map with rgbt instead of rgb, and setting the t to 1 where I want to see the land underneath. Then texture with land and then clouds.

The Gas giant has three layers; the ground just barely visible, the main cloud bands (t value around .3), and the wispy clouds.

NullAshton

I had a basic orange texture, red turbulence above that, and twisting orange glass clouds above that, all with texture displacment.

Oxygen now! Woooot!

Yep. In the early days of the Star Trek Mod before Atrocities took over, I had actually made 400 planets for the mod using Moray/Pov-Ray. Unfortunately all those images (at least the portraits and texture maps) were lost in a hard drive crash. I've done another 60 or so oxygen ice/rock planets in recent times, but put it on back burner. You can see some of them at my Space Empires Depot website. Link below in my signature.
