Im all over the new ASCII interface, "SE5: Roguelike" is going to kick some serious @.

But will we be able to put an openGL skin on it, like this:

http://legion.gibbering.net/golem/images/screen06.jpg

(there used to be a cool skin for nethack that rendered all the ASCII characters in Open GL, so you had 3D ASCII characters and not hand-drawn replacement art a-la Falcon's Eye.. but the project page seems to be gone. The above link was the next best thing i could find)

When you have a moment, look at the Patch section of the SEV webpage. I like the text http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hmmm, they should think about updating the "About Us" portion of the webpage...the content on it is 3 years old and doesn't even mention SEV! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

More news!

4/01/05 - SE5 Beta Test Lottery
We're picking them right this very minute. The list of beta testers will be posted just a little later today...

04/01/05 - SE5 Screenshots
And what goes better with a new website than SE5 screenshots! Check them out in the SE5 Gallery.

04/01/05 - New Web Site
A new web site? Oh Yes! Many thanks to David Gervais for his work on the new website. Hopefully it will help everyone find what they're looking for!

i like how the 3d asteroids in the system screen reflect the light from the sun on one side, and not on the other. actual lighting. nice.

I also like the link to Shrapnel Games on the main page. It may just be because there are unsold copies of SE4, SF, and DO, but I like to think its because the relationship is still amaciable and everyone is friends.

Who thinks Strategy First will be releasing news about SE5 on Monday, now that the new web page is online?

No offense too the site maker, but I dont like it
Especially with it being in html frames (which is a big no-no in the webdesign world these days)
You should of at least made the site in php using php includes for the things that appear on each page, which is extremely easy to do as you could still use html coding

Oh, but I love the screenshots, better than I imagined
Oh one thing, I thought research was being altered? It looks like it hasnt changed

And that 3d combat looks quite sneazy (sp?)
Us modders are going to have alot of fun with this game I imagine

Dead,
snazzy is the word you want
The graphics are quite good looking, in my opinion. If you look close at the ship to ship combat one, you can see some nice particle effects...
I wonder if the game will have AA and AF... (if not, just enable them with the driver util...)

Renegade 13

Actually Deadzone, research has changed back to an SEIII system. You can assign percentages of your research points to any number of projects you want. It's not an all-points-in-one-project or divided-evenly-so-you-waste-points system like SEIV. If it's like SEIII, the research points will wrap-around in a way, so any excess points you spend getting a certain level will go towards the next level in that field of research.

DeadZone

Outstanding, cant wait
Does anyone know if it will have inf levels on some projects (I know it was suggested)

All of it is inf levels if I am not mistaken. This research tree truly never ends.

Edit: But keep in mind the further you go the less you will get each level.

Looks like both larger system and larger tactical maps. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

douglas

Very much larger system maps. I counted a radius of 12-14 on that hex grid (12 if you go in exactly a straight path out, only possible in 6 directions, 14 for the farthest edge that requires a little zig-zagging to get there from the center), compared to just 6 for SEIV.

It's a widescreen display (16x9, not 4x3). Its getting fairly common on laptops, at least the one I got. It's actually really sweet, because movies look good on it, and you can just plain see more... thing is some video games have less than optimal support for it.

Looking at the pics on the site and a couple of notes:

1.) Maintenance on facilities
http://www.malfador.com/SE5scr004.htm
There aren't any currently, are there? Would make a resource limited game quite interesting.

2.) Asteroids - Occlusion
http://www.malfador.com/SE5scr006.htm
I guess that will replace "condition" allowing only certain size ships to pass through the sector? (Can you hide a fleet of smaller ships inside?)

Caduceus

3.) Using a Warp Point in Tactical Combat
http://www.malfador.com/SE5scr007.htm
Could you possibly flee through the warp point (icon on bottom right of options)?

Aside from just the eye candy there are a lot of minor features shown off in the screenshots.

Anybody notice the list of system features in the top left corner of the system screens?

How about crew listing in the combat screen?

Or the fact there appears to be a retreat button in the combat screen?

One thing I am interested in knowing, if ground combat is going to be tactical now, will we be capable of targetting buildings? Can units reatreat from ground combat? Would make for some interesting hit and run missions. Land, smash as many facilities as possible, then retreat.

Bobhouse
April 1st, 2005, 08:46 PM
And in tactical combat will there only be built facilities? What about non player controlled cities or not fully built facilities?

My bet would be "occlusion" refering to sight obstruction. Like the storms and nebulas do in SE4.

As you can see in the info bar above the screen, only the Amon'Krie flag appeared, no other flag was there. And the ships looked like they were in a starting defensive position.

David E. Gervais

The reason only the amonkrie flag is seen is probably due to all the screenshots being grabbed in one game session. At least that's the way I see it.

I would certainly like the possibility to open the tactical combat screen without an enemy present. Would make for additional modding possibilities; you can have comps that launch little or no units in strategic control mode (i.e. the "game") but that can launch (more) units in combat mode.
