View Full Version : Ship strategy after retrofit?

Does a retrofitted ship keep the strategy of the original ship or take the strategy of the "new" model?
I'm sure this is in a previous post, but I can't seem to find it.
Thanks.

Strategy is set by ship class. Whatever the class is after the retrofit is the strategy for the ship.

Yeah, and that is really annoying. I found out, once, that I had been retrofitting my entire fleet for many turns and suddenly realized that all of it had entirely the wrong strategy. When retrofitting, all possible former characteristics should be inherited, IMHO...

Are the strategies hard-coded or can they be changed?
Edit: I guess I mean, will attack ships always be optimal firing range as default or can this be changed to point blank, without having to go in manually every time.

Given the current system where strategy is determined by class, having the strategy carry over would be a horrible idea. You'd have no way of knowing what the strategy for you ships were.
What you want is for strategy to be settable for particular ships. We are pushing for that in SE5. Don't know yet if it's a feature.

Thanks for the quick responses. I was hoping that the strategy would change with the ship class, because I have a number of "partially built" ships that I hope to have different strategies when they are completed.

"Every time" meaning only once for each new ship class you design?

It can change, but I've never figured out what causes it to change. Sometimes the default combat strategy for new war ships is set to a recent strategy you used or edited. There are also a couple of exceptions based on class _type_ and/or components included on the ship (e.g. Carriers default to Don't Get Hurt).

It seems that every ship class I create/upgrade inherits the Don't Get Hurt strategy. That's probably because I use my own ship class names. Military, Classified, Support. That IS why we can change those, right?
So it would be a great idea if a ship that was created by upgrading a current design would automatically inherit the strategy of the design it was upgraded from.

What would probably be best is when you COPY a ship in the Ship Design screen, the new ship design should inherit the original ship design's (current) strategy setting.
