Long Live the Grey One!
At an invation from Mac, I Have Returned - but as a very different person.
Not much to say. I've been dividing my time between:
Women
Model RailRoading
Empire Deluxe Enhanced Edition, (which I Beta tested)

Not sure how often I'll be around or when or what I'll do when I'm here.
Nice to see ya.
Be Well,

Hi Puke, Na, the computer remembed it. but this is my last post as Gryphin. My fiance changed her mind. Our relationship was so deeply linked to "The Gryphin" that she had it tatooded in the small of her back.
So, _life happens_ and we move on.

I'll have to get me a new avatar. That will take some time while I think about it and find a new name for "The Gryphin Position".
Thanks Puke, I still Circle the Wagons as well.

Any suggestions for a new name for TGP?

Hello again. Sorry about the break-up.

You know, the initials TGP still work. Only problem is that someone might think that The Grey Position involves attaching stirrups to a postropedic bed to avoid damage to your artificial hip.

That, or it necessitates the presence of The Mac. And while I greatly respect and admire The Mac, I dont think theres any need for us to get involved in each other's nookie.

Unfortuneatly, "The Grey Splay" sounds like someone who is either in need of a shave, or hair dye. I'm temporarily at a loss for other bad rhymes.

Puke, - you too, how goes the battle?
Ultima - Not sure I know you but nice to meet you.

Guys, I guess I stopped hanging around here because being funny takes alot of energy and I just could not compete. I really liked SEIV but it was just too complicated for me. EDIE and EDEE are just right. I run the EDEE Mod group. ER: I own it. Not much to running it.

Question: Is it ok to talk about EDEE here?
Nice to see you guys again.

Puke
April 19th, 2005, 09:08 PM
Hey, you dont need to be actively funny (he sure makes me laugh) to hang about here. You can just be passivly funny (there just something not-quite-right about that chap) like most of us.

Kick back, relax, and call us names from time to time.

If SE4 is too complex, the RPS (Rock Paper Scissors) mod distills everything to three easy choices for ya http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Feel free to talk about whatever you like. for an old comrade like you, we wouldnt complain if you brought up the topic of Barbie video games.

Heh. And talent. When it comes to 'standard jokes' in real life - The best description I have for my joke-telling ability is a joke.

'Bob had just gotten into prison. Since his was a minor crime, he and the other prisoners were allowed the freedom of the building and grounds.

So, Bob wanders around and comes accross four guys sitting around a table and hears one of them saying '86!'. Everyone bursts out laughing.

'14!' - More laughter. '52!' - Yet more laughter.

Understandably curious by this time, Bob asked 'What's so funny about numbers?'

One guy turned to him and said 'Oh, we've been here so long we've memorized all our jokes and numbered them. So now, whenever we want to tell a joke, we just say the number.'

So Bob asks 'Mind if I try?'

'Sure, go ahead.'

'17!' - Dead silence.

Bob - 'Wasn't it funny?'

Other guy - 'I guess some people can tell them, and some people can't.''

That's me. (No, I'm not in prison. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif) I can't do those kinds of jokes. I do them well enough on the internet, if I have a good one, but in real life I either crack up to soon, or don't tell it well, or something. IRL, I'm better at dry, spontanious, ironic comments.

So, point? I guess the point is, you just have to find the kind of humor you're good at and use that.

Hi Grey_One. You don't know me I am new as my registration date states. I mostly ask stupid questions. I am only responding to welcome you back. To empathize over over the breakup. I dated a girl in college for 3 years before we broke up (Many years ago). Currently I have been happily married for over 17 years. Relationships are hard and they don't always work.

The main reason I am responding is that I was in to modelrailroading too. I did HO scale up until 6 months ago. I moved from Ohio to Colorado and the train layout wasn't designed to be moved. You know the saying when a man makes a plan God laughs. My plan was not to move.

I still have all the engines (60) and cars (150). Oh and the buildings, autos, people, animals and miscellanous stuff stored. Just no place for a layout, even though my 3 kids each have their own room.:(

So hi and glad you are back. I enjoy SEIV and enjoy the forum.

Best wishes and God bless (If you don't mind).

Edited to find really bad mistakes. There are more I am sure.

Grey_one I am on Trainboard as Edmund.

Also the Atlas forum and a couple others as Edmund. I don't post much. I tend to read. Especially as the layout is gone.

My layout was a 4x8 in my upstairs bedroom. There was no way to get it back out once it was built. It was my first and I was just learning. I had it about 9 years. Next time I plan on 2'x 4' modules that can be disassembeld. Oh and I plan on going to DCC with a backup old dc for the old engines I can't or don't want to convert.

I started a web page for the layout a couple years back then my scanner died and I never got around to finishing it. The free hosted site has tons of pop-ups so I won't link to it. I had a custom logo and my own paint scheme. Burgundy top and grey middle and bottom. I could post an image maybe if I could remember how. But it is way off topic.

SEIV really rocks though. I haven't tried PBW because with a wife <font color="red">I plan on keeping</font> and 3 kids I don't have the time.

I have been into trains for a long time. Never had a chance to build a layout, though. I picked up my first handbuilt coach my father made about 50 years ago. For some reason, had the bug ever since. Collected HO stuff little by little, then got drafted. Decided to stay in the army for 20 years. Did a LOT of travel in Europe and fell in love with European trains. That's when I decided I'd build an N scale layout as soon as I got out of the army. SO, I bought a lot of N scale European stuff. Circa 1920's - 1940's. Now, I've hauled it with me everywhere I've been for 20 years and still havent done a thing with it. Brand new stuff in original boxes and packed away. Tried selling it but European doesn't do well in the states. So, there it sits. Contacted a hobby shop who said they'd take it off my hands but it was basically theft and I held on to it.

I have over 500 photos that I took in Europe of trains. Never did get a chance to ride the TGE or ICE train. And the Chunnel wasn't done yet. But, I got let into a yard to walk around and take photos in Augsburg Germany in 1976. They still had a turntable! Lots of nice negatives from that bit of luck.

Oh well, thanks for the opportunity to walk down "train lane".

No LOL. I am sticking to "Real trains" HO scale http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif. I am waiting for my kids to move out. Then I take over the bedrooms. N scale is so small and with my eyes getting worse as I age (42 already) I don't think I could handle the smaller parts.

I probably will use standard Atlas track and ballast it myself. The only changes I plan are DDC, new layout and maybe kadee couplers. I was using hornhook because all of the engines and cars I got from my Dad had them. But they were a pain. So The Kadee conversation will start when I start the layout.

Sure. You can attach it to your post. Click on the checkbox next to "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file," which is just above the "Continue" button. Make sure to save it in a compressed, non-bitmap format first. Then, after you have made the post, you can add it in-post by inserting something of this form into your post:

<font class="small">Code:</font><hr /><pre> http://url.com </pre><hr />
You can get the url of your image simply by viewing it. Click on the Attachment link on your new post, which is below the post title. Copy the address of the image from the address bar. Make sure it has the file extension of what you uploaded. You don't want the code that links the file download in the post to the actual file, you want the actual address of the file. Use this address in place of "url.com" in the above quoted image code. Edit this into your already existing post.

Anyway I custom painted that engine using Krylon spray paint. I created the custom decals using Walthers decal paper and my HP 632C printer. THe trick though is to take the printed sheet to Staples and ask them to make a color copy of the printed sheet for you or they will smear and bleed when appling. Hmm, No. thanks. I'm not sure how I percieve myself.
The "grey" in my name is not that of my hair color or the way i feel. it is a reflection of how I view life. There are very few areas I see as "black and white" 'right or wrong". There is always some grey area in between. I have asked questions that bring radical liberals and staunch conservatives alike to a dead silence because the answers poke holes in their apsolute stances on a given issue. Suddenly "Yes by God" becomes "well, most of the time &gt; becomes well, I _think_ so etc...
I see my glass as 3/4s full but I like to change gflasses often so they need refilling. Keeps life interesting.

An amorpheus cloud maybe?
Or maybe a color-fill from one corner to the other, from silver to black so that most of the square would be shades of gray?
I used something like that for "Unicus the God of Mediation" (Shadowdale MUD). His robes were white at one foot and black at the other and gradually climbed in a blend to a silvery-grey at the neck.

I gave the avatar more thought based on your insightfull comments and came up with this...

http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/uploads/349980-GrayOne06.gif

A man of deep thought, fully aware that mankind was not easily defined by right and wrong, black and white, or truth and lies. A man who saw mankind as a constantly shifting fog with moments of clarity and blinding darkness...

My guess is this is closer, but you might be looking for something more abstract like what Gandalf has suggested.

Anyway, I do enjoy making these.

ive GOT IT!!!

Since 'Grey' refers to philosophy and not the shade of your scruff, I have the perfect rename for The Gryphin Position:

In quantum mechanics, there is a state of quantum bits that is between ON and OFF. this is a quantum superstate, where the object is in all possible states at once, until it is observed.

This is the perfect moniker for something that is neither black or white, neither on nor off, but is simultaniouly all things.

Thus, the SUPERPOSITION is all positions existing simultaniously and at one time, and is completely undefineable unless you observe it.

but even observing this position has been known to be hazardous to fragile circulatory systems.

Interesting reason for a name choice, Grey_One. I gotta say it was well-thought-out and seems to fit.

As to my collection of trains, I wouldn't call them cute (LOL). It's all steam-era with a bit of concentration in KPEV (Prussian Railway) and Deutsche Reichsbahn to try to piece together something believable circa 1940 (give or take). I could unbox and get some picks for an interested buyer. One or two of the locs I bought were limited editions, as I recall.

'Will the Kat accept Plato in the Bar and Grill?' This statement surprises me young man, it implies you seek his aproval for something that needs no aproval. Indeed, if the Kat were to try and excercise a "No Phillosophors Allowed" I'd be forced to unsheath my pen and write volums of Philosophy on the Bar's walls. (especially on the stalls in the washrooms) There would be a spectacular battle as philosophers from all around the world joined in the heated discussion of,.. oops, sorry, my Master's degree in Philosophy is peeking out again..

Man, you could go to town with a Plato avatar, you could tease the Kat to no end refering to him as 'simpleton', and disect his every post until it becomes meaningless. You could pick a phrase in any of his posts and reveal it's true meaning,..

To Paraphrase Plato,.. "You can subject every post to the full force of critical thinking, until nothing certain remains.

Sounds like a plan! Of course, I will insist on being allowed to quote Plato, Socrates and other philosophers in their own tongue (Ancient Greek in this case), to make the whole thing even more interesting. It *is* war after all, so all weapons are game.

Oh, and I cast my ballot for the superposition thing; it's definitively fitting. And yet another reason to give a full 4 stars for Puke!

Amazing the way that tiny double border (and "upper-lefthand light source") "brings out" an avatar. Nice job!

Yes, I really like the spiral B&amp;W icon.

I think the light glare in the upper left detracts greatly from this particular image. It disrupts the flow of the swirl. To me, the image looks better with black in that spot instead of white.

As much as I like to disagree with fyron http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif I think this might be one of those rare occasions where we happen to be on common ground... (but if asked I'll deny fyron actually had any influance on this post.) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Double boarder, no spotlight works for me. Let's do it.
Thanks guys.

On a completely separate topic:

David and Fyron in concourance.
Wow, look a pig just flew by my window. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Hmm, maybe Fyron has even more powers we don't know about.

Why not simply rotate the avatar by 180 degrees?

Then you can keep the shiny, and it will be white on white and thus not be distracting.

That reminds me about the one where the Zen Monk visits NYC and goes to a hotdog stand...
