Planet Magarethea review of the HHGTTG movie (http://www.planetmagrathea.com/shortreview.html).

Quote:

"The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie is bad. Really bad. You just won't believe how vastly, staggeringly, jaw-droppingly bad it is. I mean, you might think that The Phantom Menace was a hopelessly misguided attempt to reinvent a much-loved franchise by people who, though well-intentioned, completely failed to understand what made the original popular - but that's just peanuts to the Hitchhiker's movie. Listen..."

I was hoping that the title meant someone from the forums had actually seen it.

Also, note that the quote below is a spoof of a HHGG quote.

The review is by a biased, anti-movier reviewer who later shut down his site because people at the IMBD forums (average IQ = less than a non TDM AI's) badmouthed him.

Take it with a large grain of salt; most of his complaints are about how it isn't exactly like the book, but a lot of the changes were made BY Adams and NO version of HHGTG has ever been the same as a previous one.

Well, the movie goes into general release on Friday. We'll find out soon enough how good or bad it really is.

Given the Hollywood track record on sci-fi though, the review sounded plausible...

I recall reading that his guy has an issue with book to movie movies and actually thought Alien 3 and 4 were much better than 1 and 2. Nuff said.

Well, if it sucks, pitch your popcorn and drink at the screen. That always makes the movie much more entertaining.
If it sucks *really* bad, go get a refill, and I think you know the rest.

Well, I really enjoyed the books so I'll give the film a chance and go see it, regardless of what the reviewers say.

I saw the old HHGTTG TV series, and that wasn't that good; only the first episode where the Earth gets blown up was good and the series rapidly went downhill from there. Hopefully the movie will be better than the TV series.

Oh no, the TV series was brilliant.

I have a 12 hour flight coming up this weekend, and I'm hoping HHGTTG will be shown in-flight. Last time I flew long-haul, I saw Pirates of the Caribbean (great), League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (****e), Terminator 3 (****e), that adult/teen body-swap one with Jamie lee Curtis (meh), Charlies Angels [some sequel or other] (****e), a couple of bollywood flicks (foreign language- couldn't understand them) and about 6 more less memorable films on the way home. I can't sleep on planes.

I found the BBC Radio drama quite entertaining.

Bah, that guy is a twit, HHGttG kicked ***, seeing the vogons alone was worth the 4.50 admission, Marvin was awesome, Zaphod had all his apendages(was afraid he wouldn't from the previews), and the "Yarn" Heart of Gold was hillarious(BUTTONS ARE NOT TOYS). Some parts moved a little slow, or coulda been a little better, but overall it was good. I think the casting was pretty good too, they had a good Arthur Ford, and trillian, Zaphod was a little weak though, his dialouge coulda been better.

Seconded, the Film really kicked ***. There was some great tributes as well, the Original Marvin robot turns up in the film in a few places.

It was a refreshing change from the majority of Movies released these days http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The Rottentomatoes rating is 63% and climbing. I'll have to check the local theatre to see if they have it. I must admit, Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin just may be worth the price of admission... "By Grabthar's Hammer, I'm so depressed!" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I saw it yesterday, and I thought they did a really good job of translating the book to the screen. Whoever wrote that review obviously doesn't 'get it'. If you liked the book(s), don't hesitate to go see the movie.

You haven't read the book?!?

Run - don't walk - to your nearest bookstore and GET it. NOW. And don't forget to take your towel with you, just in case.

Without question buy the first 3. Now!

Then probably skip the 4th and only go for 5 if you want a conclusion and really liked the first three. Having said that there are some good bits in 4. Meh just get one of "Trilogy in 5 parts" all in one books and make your own mind up.

Then get both the Dirk Gently books which are also excellent. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Get the Ulrtimate hitchhikers guide, it has all 5 books in the trilogy and an extra short story.

I saw it today. I'm not judgemental so I can't say it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, neither will I say it was bad. I like it though. A bit different from the books and the tv series (which I have on tape). I thought it was funny that the hologram at Magraphea is the Arthur Dent from the Tv series, and that in the queue they had the TV Marvin.

THe only version of the book that I can find is basically an exact mimic of the movie, not a "5 in one" trilogy or even the seperate books.

I saw the movie today and I have to say that I really thought it was not that good. Honestly it just seemed to british humor based for my tastes. Sorry guys, I cannot endorse this movie and would recommend that people wait to rent it on cheap $0.99 DVD nite at block buster or something.

El_Phil
May 5th, 2005, 06:21 AM
On the back of that ringing endorsement I plan to see the movie as soon as possible. Being British myself it should be perfectly to my tastes http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

How can it be too British humor-based... it IS British humor... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

El_Phil
May 5th, 2005, 08:56 AM
You'll never make it in Hollywood/US TV with that attitude. The correct approach is to remove all the things that make a British show funny (for being too British of course) and replace them with the jokes too bad to be used on Friends.

Then you wonder why no-one likes the show/film.

Randallw

There is a bit where they find a queue, at which point Arthur says something like

"A Queue? great, well I'm british I can handle a queue"

El_Phil
May 5th, 2005, 09:09 AM
Now I'm going out on a limb here but I'm guessing you've only seen certain British shows. The shows that are imported are just the ones that the local TV bosses think will work. I've noticed a difference between the US shows that Dutch, German and British TV have imported.

So I'd guess you haven't seen the half of the oddness of British TV! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

It's funny because it's odd. People get too used to American "humor", where the joke is spelled out in painfully obvious detail, and then the show laughs for you.

El_Phil
May 5th, 2005, 11:43 AM
Canned laughter is the most reliable guide in the world. It's use signals awful comedy that no audience would have laughed at. It works because once someone else is laughing it lowers the "joke threshold", so people start to laugh at something which isn't objectively funny.

But if you start to actually watch and pay attention the spell is broken.
